About 500 years ago in England, the Elizabethan era was very organically pure; instead of being inundated with chemicals, household refuse was simply dumped into the street. Garbage was duly disposed of by wandering pigs, dogs, chickens, rats, mice, insects and other vermin; what they didn't scavenge was washed into the nearest river or lake. Native Americans dumped their waste at the edge of the community into huge middens that are beloved by anthropologists. The result was pure natural ecology in action, plus plagues, illness and a perpetual stink. It took time and a lot of persuasion to build sewers to flush garbage into the nearest water. only in the last 100 years have various effective methods to treat sewage waste been developed. Fortunately, few today advocate ending government regulation of sewage disposal and leaving it to free market forces and nature. Yet, as Suzuki eloquently illustrates in his 91-page "farewell" essay, the modern world still has an Elizabethan ethic in terms of dumping pollutants into the atmosphere and oceans. Unfortunately, carbon dioxide, methane and other interesting chemical and combustion byproducts are usually invisible; the oceans are vast, and it's taken most of a century for vast floating scums of debris to create dead zones. There is an even greater difference; dumping sewage into the street only caused local plagues. Dumping carbon dioxide into the atmosphere creates global problems. We are now clever enough to impact the entire planet with our garbage; the result, if modern dumping of waste is not ended, will be global in scope. Suzuki has a clever way to illustrate the global reach of our lives. He cites the inert gas argon, about 1 percent of the atmosphere. Every breath we take contains 30,000,000,000,000,000,000 atoms of argon; exhale, and within a year the argon from a single breath will be spread across the planet. Then, every breath anyone takes will contain an average of 15 atoms of argon that we exhaled a year earlier. Likewise, some argon atoms were once in the breath of Joan of Arc, and Jesus. In other words, we are truly part of the world and everyone in it. It illustrates the nature of modern pollution. Suzuki is optimistic we will find a way to end it, and restore the world nature gave us.

Well worth the read. It is a lecture series he gave and is so comprehensive, and intelligent. I would have loved to have been there to hear it in person. David Suzuki is one of my heroes, so I might be biased, but he is an excellent teacher.
This is a must read. It plainly and clearly makes the case -- using solid scientific evidence and the weight of the scientific community as to why one MUST act on global warming today instead of pretending/wishing that the issue didn't exist.

A few years ago I started reading poetry with intention, I started looking for poets whose work that I enjoy. I found some that were quite surprising, some inspiring, some melancholy, some just bored me.Ryan's work I was not looking for anything but scatological guffaws, some perversities and other goofs. And that's what I got. Much like most of the collections of poetry of red, this is hit or miss, but it was fun and funny and lighthearted, and I'm not so sensitive aa some might be.Robinson Jeffers, John Davdison, George Sterling... he is not. But he's enjoying himself, and as long as he doesn't commit suicide he'll have two of those three beat.
I read a dozen or so of these "poems" and put the book in the garbage. I like having funny reading material by the toilet, and I'm a reasonably liberal guy, but this isn't funny, it's just trash. Sorry. The author dedicated this to his wife. My sincere sympathy goes out to her.
Some of the poems were quite entertaining!
To be fair the Author is a good friend of mine and I was fortunate enough to read alot of these rated R-X poems before the book was printed. (We share a dirty sense of humor) They are funny poems to read that will leave you thinking WTF did I just read while simultaneously laughing.
This is such a funny adult book to have in the bathroom to read. It’s a must. I think it’s extremely funny.

About the Author
Anthony Scopatz is a computational physicist and long time Python developer, Anthony holds his BS in Physics from UC, Santa Barbara and a Ph.D. in Mechanical / Nuclear Engineering from UT Austin. Anthony is proudly a fellow of the Python Software Foundation and has published and spoken at numerous conferences on a variety of science & software development topics.Kathryn Huff is a Fellow with the Berkeley Institute for Data Science and a postdoctoral scholar with the Nuclear Science and Security Consortium at the University of California Berkeley. In 2013, she received her Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Wisconsin Madison. She also holds a bachelor's degree in Physics from the University of Chicago. She has participated in varied research including experimental cosmological astrophysics, experimental non-equilibrium granular material phase dynamics, computational nuclear fuel cycle analysis, and computational reactor accident neutronics. At Wisconsin, she was a founder of The Hacker Within scientific computing group and has been an instructor for Software Carpentry since 2011. This book should be required (and enjoyable) reading for any student/researcher/scientist/engineer new to scientific computing. The book presents a modern account of the Python scientific computing environment from the command line to publication and everything good in between e.g. NumPy to parallel computing to version control and much more (see http://physics.codes for more). The book also helps you get quickly going with Python on your computer via the Anaconda environment which is very nice. I bought the Kindle version and plan to read it on my iPad while I try the programs (freely available for download at the above website) on my Macbook (ideal combination in my opinion) - it's never been more fun to be in scientific computing that it is these days and this book will help you get started or, like me, maintain and update your overall computational skill set. A must buy and a must read! Enjoy!

Given the comments I had seen by others I had higher expectations for this book. There is a brief section early in the book titled "Who this book is not for" that states "If you have already been working as a software developer for several years, this book will help you only minimally". If I had seen that before purchasing the book I probably wouldn't have purchased it. While I wouldn't describe myself as a software developer, coding has always been an essential part of my professional toolkit. I was hoping for something that would help take my game to the next level but this wasn't it.
I’ve taught myself to code, not counting a crappy freshman C++ upteen years ago. I use MATLAB and I’m learning to dabble in Python. The reason I like this book is not for the Python parts, per se, but becuase it fills in holes in my formal training, like details on the shell as a programming tool, and how to more fully take advantage of Git for version control. As the book’s forward says, this book is for physicists (well, I’m a materials scientist) who want to learn grown-up software development, not for people who are already expert software developers.I haven’t read the whole book, so I’m sure there are things I could criticize, but having skipped around to read the parts that I know the least about, it’s spectacular so far. If you’re unsure read the Kindle preview; it overviews the book well.———Edit: now, having read the whole thing, I can say this book is almost perfect for people like me: good at math and your domain science, but lacking in computer science training.
I picked this book up because I thought the title was interesting and figured I could always improve upon my repertoire of tools and skills. Although most of the topics covered were review for me, it was a delightful text to read. I strongly believe this should be required reading for any first year graduate student in science and engineering who intendeds to rely heavily on computation for both simulation and/or analysis. The authors nicely walk you through the basics of scripting, coding, and data management. The authors then provide an overview of best practices for project management and scientific software. An easy and insightful read, strongly recommend.
I got this book from the local library and am glad that I didn't shell out the money, to be honest. Judging by the introduction, I should be the key audience for this book, a scientist interested and somewhat familiar with Python; I'm mainly using Matlab at work. Initially, I had the hope that advanced concepts would be explained by example using real-world problems as hinted at in the introduction. That's not the case at all, though. The authors lightly touch upon a multitude of random topics. There's breadth here, but only very shallow depth. To someone considering this book, try to get it from a library and judge for yourself. If you want to learn more about Python, go with 'Fluent Python', if you like to use Python for data analysis in science, I like 'Data Analysis with Open Source Tools'. For more advanced Python programming, have a look at 'Effective Python', though that one is not for the faint of heart;-)

White Hunters is a nostalgic and densely-packed history of these men and their adventures, from the turn of the century until the 1970s when politics, a growing population, civil strife, and concern about species destruction intervened. A second-generation Kenyan who has professionally hunted big game for more than 30 years and is an honorary Uganda National Park warden, Herne did exhaustive archival research and conducted countless interviews to produce this encyclopedia of gore and glamour. From roughly 1890 to 1970, American and European aristocrats, movie stars and business tycoons converged on East Africa, hiring professional white hunters to lead them on lengthy, luxurious shooting expeditions. Theodore Roosevelt's 1909 safari lasted for months and employed 500 porters. The early generation of white hunters set the pace for a hard-drinking, bed-hopping lifestyle. Later, Bror Blixen, Isak Dinesen and Denys Finch-Hatton carried on just as flamboyantly as their screen counterparts in Out of Africa. In turn-of-the-century Nairobi, inebriated ladies rode their ponies up steps into bars. But the dangers were real, and Herne details various narrow escapes and deaths by mauling. I enjoyed this book very much. A lot of stories about the old and new White Hunters of Africa. From Cunninghame and Schillings to Ker and Downey. Hunting is about over with for Africa. These are some great stories. I am not a hunter. This is about the people and the adventure of Safaris. A lot about animals they hunted. Lots of times the animal wins. Many of these hunters died doing what they loved to do. I highly recommend this book..
What amazing collection of stories as well as history of not only "white hunters" but history, culture as well as the sad decline of African wildlife largely due to the end of hunting in many African countries.Many of these hunters will only be remembered because of this book - because they never wrote themselves.Thank you Mr. Herne
The story would be helped by more overview telling the reader how the profession peaked and faded. It would also help to map out the people who were active during each given time period. Finally, some hunters were mentioned but little detail was provided. In particular J. A. Hunter was mentioned several times in conjunction with other hunters, but little detail was provided other than a bit about his arrival in 1908. A fast Wikipedia search confirmed my suspicion that he had a long and significant career but he may not have been as colorful as some of the hunters who were featured. Unfortunately the author dangled the name, suggesting that more was to be learned yet he left me to search on my own.
Good stories, great insight into a culture that no longer exists, and an unintentional commentary on colonial Africa versus independent Africa. Very readable and interesting. Lots of info on European and American celebrities, as well. Only negative is that the introductions to different hunters begin to get predictable...brief descriptive paragraph with superlatives varying only in physical descriptions, but almost interchangeable.
Once you start White Hunters you can’t put it down! It covers not only the highly famous White Hunters but many of the less famous also with no holds bared information on what they did and how they ended up. Absolutely great and a good reference for those interested in the subject.
The book has a simple, easy set up. Each chapter deals with a individual or group of individuals who went to hunt or live in Africa. The next chapter deals with people who, usually, were trained by the folks in the earlier chapters. Or were related by birth. Or shoot at. It is a history of 20th Century Africa person by person. Hunters, ivory collectors, photographers, families, soldiers, Hollywood stars, trackers and criminals. Death, romance, big game hunting and humor all rolled up in one book. With politics, world history and unexplored territories tossed in for good measure. With a few maps and lots of black and white photos, this is a must for anybody interested in big game hunting, Africa or world history.
Hunting was different that it is now. I think today's true hunters hunt humanly and respectfully for the animals that are takem.
This book will add to an understanding of the now vanished world of colonial East Africa. For those who are viscerally anti-hunting, this will be a book that will probably not be considered, and that is a pity, because it is about more than hunting -- though there's plenty enough to satisfy fans of Capstick, Hunter, et al. Mr. Herne's homage to a special breed of men (and women), white and black, is well written and ideal for leisurely reading and rereading. It is brimming with anecdotes both amusing and hair-raising. I've given my copy away and am now ordering another. White Hunters is a worthwhile addition to the library of the sportsman or the person interested in colonial Africa, from the late 19th century to independence. Whether relating stories of such early white hunter legends as Selous, Cunninghame and Black, or the role played by white hunters in the oft-mismatched British campaigns against German-led guerilla operations in WWI, or the horrors faced by white settlers during the Mau Mau troubles of the '50s, these tales never bog down. One of my favorite hunters, by the way, was "Shagbag" Collins. On a parallel note, I would recommend, The Life of My Choice by Sir Wilfred Thesiger and Home from the Hill by Hilary Hook, though I'm not sure of the current availability of either of these books.

I have been waiting for this book for months and was so thrilled to get it today in the mail. I am a huge nature lover, and this book did not disappoint. It contains beautiful works of art created from flowers, berries, leaves, and the photos just seem to pop right off the page. I was not expecting the tidbits about the how the photos came to be, tidbits about the artist and author, but that was a plus for me. If you love nature and beautiful photos and works of art, this book is for you.
This book is gorgeous!! The art created in these pages is so beautiful, and her words are lovely! It is a window into a natural world that has never crossed your mind but will never leave. You will forever see each leaf, each petal, each plant in a whole new light! Her art has inspired my daughters to go out and make nature art of their own which is one of the greatest gifts I could ever imagine!
This book is everything I hoped it would be and more! I ordered a copy for myself and a copy for my mom as a gift. It has absolutely stunning photos and nature artwork. Love it!

My wife wanted to get it for her mom's birthday. It looked very nice and is great quality. Her mom loves it and said the pictures are peaceful and calming.
I bought this as a Christmas gift and had a hard time not keeping it for myself. The art is beautiful, well photographed. The book is quality. There were more pictures than I expected. I was so pleased.
This book is amazing, a must get for anyone who loves gardening.
