“With the simplicity of a Zen master and the wit of an author who knows his business, Seth Barrish offers the true gift of any teacher to a student: precise tools that are easy to grab and handy for life.” —Martin Moran, actor, playwright“After having had my fair share of overly intense and arrogant acting teachers while living in New York, Seth was a breath of fresh air. He exorcised out the ‘work’ of acting and finally brought back its true intention... ‘play.’” —Tony Hale, actor“As a casting director who has never acted, his succinct, accessible lessons help me to not only be a better reader with the actors I audition on a daily basis, but these lessons have also given me the vocabulary to direct the actors into giving a better performance.” —Jennifer Euston, casting director“I have introduced Seth’s book to my closest friends. I love when books get down and dirty , this is a book of tips for the professional actor , very helpful and very easy to remember and try , troubleshooting is a subject that actors usually talk between them anecdotally, it is very useful to have a book that is not addressing the issue of training like most books do , or have a books that talks about new age acting "how to live your life stuff" ( both of the useful ) but to address issues of crafty tips like a coach beside you whispering in your ear ! The writers voice is very direct and light but most importantly to the point ! One if is well read will identify Michael chekhov's words and advise and many other teacher , that's is to say that the teacher has borrowed wisdom both from his experience and from other masters , somethings that makes the book even better ! I liked the fact that he didn't feel like he had to either tell us ( not in all stories ) the source of the exercise or the reason behind it , sometimes all you need is just the advice ! Very well done sir !

The perfect tool for any actor interested in direct, tangible acting advice and methods as opposed to ethereal theory. I took a few classes at the Barrow Group (anyone serious about their craft should as well) including a scene study course with Seth. Excellent actor training and their 'method' is laid out in this book.

Seth is probably the best acting teacher in New York at the moment. And he's not just a teacher, he puts up or shuts up. The man has honed and directed four incredible one person plays that I've witnessed, two with Martin Moran and two with Mike Birbiglia, directed productions at THE BARROW GROUP, always to naturalistic perfection and acted in several of them (He's a bitchin' actor). This book is the most beautiful and simple crutch and actor will ever receive.

I will be upfront: I love this guy. What i loved most about the approach he has taken to the writing is that the bite size points are not only digested easily but they tend to stimulate memory examples from the recent and distant past. This makes it an engaging and absorbing read, taking me from a stance of theoretical comprehension to engaged practical understanding. I got a good deal out of the weekend i spent with Seth at the Barrow Group but his book has revitalised the connection and appreciation i had then and has clarified some points which i had not quite got. I loved Hagen's Respect for Acting, but whilst i think what she says is practical, it does come packed in a slightly doctrinal box. I found the manner in which Seth has approached the simplicity of acting in specific points helps me identify issues to be addressed and i look forward to using the book as a part of the search for the answers.

Awesome guide for every actor to have! Seth's masterful ways into "The craft" are useful, practical and can assist every actor, no matter how experienced they are. He finds a way of writing that really allows the actor to fully understand each point he is making. Definitely a back pocket book to hold onto. With his writing I was able to translate things I had only ever thought about.. Things dealing with character, character type, physical awareness and so much more. - Not to mention the Barrow Group has an amazing group of actors. If this is just a smidget of what they're discussing then it's worth it!

I had the chance to study with Seth in NYC and am so grateful to have his words, reminders, tips and wisdom at my fingertips. Seriously, this man and his book are full of the genius any actor needs to bring real life, true vulnerability, and the beauty of human foibles into their work.

I’m amazed by the clarity and brevity of this book. It’s as though a professional distilled years of experience into small, pithy (and funny!) easy to understand nuggets of wisdom.

Seth Barrish is being too modest in his title. The insights in this book, presented as seemingly innocuous little snippets of advice, add up to a powerful portrait of theatre itself, and would certainly be useful to anyone who is interested in the performing arts.Yes, it provides excellent guidance or reminders for actors; but writers, directors, producers, and even critics could benefit greatly from the straightforward advice as well.

I really enjoyed this book because it offered a first-person perspective of the Cuban Revolutionary War. Those who are interested in what made Che Guevara the person he was and gave him the desire to fight for the Cuban people would probably be better off with an earlier book, like The Motorcycle Diaries. However, those who want the details of what went on with or around Che during the war, this book is the right one for you, especially if you've seen the movie and liked it. This volume gives Che's involvement with the war in a diary-style form, including dates and places. I found myself frequently referencing the map provided near the beginning of the book to fully understand what happened and why. Che both writes of events in a matter-of-fact manner and also how some events affected him personally and the others who joined him in the struggle for Cuban independence. I especially recommend this book for history buffs because of the above-mentioned reasons. Overall, some of it was rather dry, but it was still a great read.

I am living in Bolivia, so I wanted to flesh out some of this country’s history by reading this book. I have been to some of the areas Che wandered. I have spoken to people in Samaipata and Vallegrande who experienced this escapade. I don’t think of this man as a hero. He killed a colt because it annoyed him. He caused the deaths of many Bolivians, those who fought him and those who helped him. He never gained followers in Bolivia. Why should they follow a man who invaded their country and caused the death of so many. He is responsible for the deaths of thousands, yet is idolized. What I saw in this book, was 11 months of starving, sick foreign mercenaries fighting over food and wondering aimlessly through the jungle. Not one page seemed heroic. I do recommend this book, because I don’t want people to see him as a hero, but the failed man he was at his death.

These taciturn notes taken during the Bolivian guerilla campaign were clearly intended for Che's own use and not for publication. They reveal much more about the man and his motives than even the definitive Jon Lee Anderson biography. Whatever his possible ideological shortcomings, Che Guevara is shown to be insightful, intelligent, determined, dignified, disciplined, devoted, slightly detached and absolutely dedicated to the cause of peasant liberation from the oppressive military dictatorships governing Latin America and (unfortunately) serving the pecuniary and strategic interests of the United States as well as satisfying their own avarice. Additional commentary bracketing the very short diary is provided by fellow combatants. Newly translated and restored sections and a helpful chronology and comprehensive roster of participants define this edition. The apparently endless Bolivian expedition (actually, it was slightly less than a year, beginning March and effectively ending with Che's capture and execution following the Yuro Ravine battle on October 8, 1968) is reminiscent of the travels and travails in the Amazon of Spanish conquistadore, Lope de Aguirre in the middle 1500s. Aguirre, as depicted in Werner Herzog's "Aguirre, the Wrath of God" was in quest of El Dorado. As with Aguirre's plagued expedition, attrition of the very small force under Che's command (from drownings, battle wounds, nagging hunger and intermittent malnutrition, parasites and deaths) eventually cast a nearly surreal aspect on the revolutionary group. Of course, neither Aguirre nor Che found any sort of El Dorado: just misery and death. Che's succinct diary entries and brief comments from some of the 8 survivors, provide a brisk and effective antidote to any romance associated with rural guerilla life. The most complete supplemental information is from Inti Peredo's diary, written while on the run and in hiding in La Paz (he was later killed by the Bolivian military) confirm the generally favorable impressions of Che, both as a man and as a revolutionary. Peredo, along with other members of the guerilla contingent, suffered mightily. Therefore, if anything, one would expect his comments to be highly critical: far from it.The major shortcoming of the book is the failure of the editors to provide context. The diary notes reveal little (if anything) about Che's strategy and I was baffled by his tactics. Sometimes, the arduous wanderings through the Bolivian backwoods seemed counter-intuitive from both a military and political perspective. Apparently, very little interaction with the peasantry occurred and that which did often seemed to go awry. Thwarted assumptions regarding the revolutionary potential of the benighted peasants fail to douse Che's boundless faith in the "anti-Imperialist" class. Betrayals by the Bolivian Communist Party and captured guerillas fail to damp Che's spirit. Really, its hard to believe."The Bolivian Diary" can be considered a "stand alone" book, but it is best read in conjunction with Anderson's biography and, most especially, Che's lucid and well-written "The African Dream" (the Congolese campaign). As Peredo reports, "People often join a guerilla force with little political education, motivated by epic exploits, heroic episodes, or simply by political-military intuition. This leads to a false idealization of the struggle and the life of a guerilla. Such a phenomenon is felt especially strongly among university students." Given the ongoing adulation of Che, the "romantic revolutionary", apparently this is true. "Bolivian Diary" should be an effective antidote to at least that aspect of Che's legacy.

Obviously this is a very “Che eye view” of the happenings of the Cuban revolution. It contains scant information on the overall strategic plans of the July 26th Movement which is oddly disappointing to me. Nonetheless, Che’s eloquent and matter of fact writing make this a good, quick read and a great view into the mind of one of the 20th centuries most polarizing figures during what is one of his most formative times

Che customarily writes an entry every day in his diaries, even when nothing happened all day. He uses them later to write a memoir without all the boring day-to-day stuff. Of course he could not do that with his final diary. At first this appears to be a diary about nothing but a lot of marching, marching, marching. You can get more out of it by reading it as a companion to a biography, like Jon Lee Anderson's very detailed biography of Che. Then you'll know why their 10 day excursion took 48 days, and what happened to Joaquin's troops, or why Fidel couldn't send them reinforcements, and other questions that are not answered in the diary, because the diary is only a little slice of the bigger picture. Worth reading if you are interested in the revolution in a historical sense (whether or not you agree with Che politically).

Typical Che diary/reflection. I liked it.

I was compelled to read this book (and also Che's Bolivian Diary) after seeing the Soderbergh/Del Toro movie recently. I've read some recent reviews saying this book was boring but I don't agree, mainly because I've become so interested in Latin American history. I found it to be an intriguing account of Che's collaboration with Castro in Cuba.

Review

"Corey deftly weaves multiple points of view to create a dense and colorful tapestry of political intrigue, personal relationships, and sophisticated technology that bursts with action but also delivers an introspective view of the characters as they age and reflect on their purpose and the value of their lives."―Booklist (starred review)"A standout tale of violence, intrigue, ambition, and hope. ... Corey cranks up the tension relentlessly in this fast-paced story of heroes and rebels fighting for freedom. With enough thrills and intrigue for three Hollywood blockbusters, the novel stands alone nicely, making it easy for new readers as well as diehard series fans to dive right in." ―Publishers Weekly on Nemesis Games"The science fictional equivalent of A Song of Ice and Fire...only with fewer beheadings and way more spaceships."―NPR Books on Cibola Burn"Combining an exploration of real human frailties with big SF ideas and exciting thriller action, Corey cements the series as must-read space opera."―Library Journal (starred review) on Cibola Burn"The Expanse series is the best space opera series running at full tilt right now, and Cibola Burn continues that streak of excellence."―io9 on Cibola Burn"Corey's splendid fourth Expanse novel blends adventure with uncommon decency."―Publishers Weekly (starred review) on Cibola Burn"A politically complex and pulse-pounding page-turner.... Corey perfectly balances character development with action... series fans will find this installment the best yet."―Publishers Weekly on Abaddon's Gate"It's been too long since we've had a really kickass space opera. Leviathan Wakes is interplanetary adventure the way it ought to be written, the kind of SF that made me fall in love with the genre way back when, seasoned with a dollop of horror and a dash of noir. Jimmy Corey writes with the energy of a brash newcomer and the polish of a seasoned pro. So where's the second book?"―George R. R. Martin on Leviathan Wakes"An excellent space operatic debut in the grand tradition of Peter F. Hamilton."―Charles Stross on Leviathan Wakes"High adventure equaling the best space opera has to offer, cutting-edge technology, and a group of unforgettable characters bring the third installment of Corey's epic space drama (after Caliban's War and Leviathan Wakes) to an action-filled close while leaving room for more stories to unfold. Perhaps one of the best tales the genre has yet to produce, this superb collaboration between fantasy authors Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck should reawaken an interest in old-fashioned storytelling and cinematic pacing. Highly recommended."―Library Journal (starred review) on Abaddon's Gate

I just finished Tiamat's Wrath and gave it 5 stars. I never give anything 5 stars, and maybe after I detox I'll want to drop it back to 4 stars, but really, it was great. Writing, characters, plot, sciencey stuff, galactic politics. All really well done. Thoughtful but accessible, not a combination we often get in SF.Also, not the place to start the series or even this three-book arc.Like Nemesis Games, this is a story where the crew of the Roci are all off doing separate things, which is how we left it at the end of the previous book, Persopolis Rising. If you read that, then you'll remember that the black fleet that disappeared through the ring gates early on has come back with newer bigger ships and rolled Empire all over the 1300 worlds humans have access to. Naomi, Alex, Amos, and Bobbi are all back in the underground game, and Holden is prisoner to High Consul Duart, man who would be emperor, or as Jim puts it, his "Dancing Bear."Bobbi and Alex are off running another captured ship, the Gathering Storm, which they took away from the Laconian Imperial fleet at the end of the last book, and Naomi is doing deep thinking and strategizing for the new resistance while hiding out in an elaborate shell game of cargo containers and shipping vessels. Amos went off on a high-risk mission to get Jim back and has gone dark, and Jim's wandering around chatting up the emperor, the mad scientist that's been cooking proto-molecule since book 1, and Teresa, the girl who stands to inherit the empire if her now proto-molecule-immortal father ever falls. Meanwhile, Duarte has scientists (played by our old friends from Cibola Burn, Elvi, and Fayez) off looking for a solar system empty enough that he can do something to poke the bear on the other side of the ring, the one that makes ships disappear if too many go through too often. What could go wrong? As Holden says, "...the problem with thousand-year Reichs. they come and go like fireflies."I haven't liked all the Expanse novels equally, and the previous one made me worried that the series would end on a whimper rather than a bang, but Tiamat's Wrath makes me think that it's going to be something to remember.Ernest LilleySFRevu - Editor Emeritus

I am sure I will love the book as I have the prior books and I have looked forward to this for months! I purchased the audible and kindle version as quick as I could today. My one disappointment is that whispersync features that allows syncing of your position between the Kindle version and the audible version is not enabled. Is this planned to be enabled soon? This technical issue reduces enjoyment of books for me and I hope it can be added soon.

4 words in and I hate the authors.

From start to finish I was immersed in the story it was like I was there with the characters. I only wish the next book was available.

How could an invincible empire fall? A really cool next volume that sets things up for the ultimate novel. Some sadness, some joy, but that’s life.

So nice to be back in the Expanse world. Excellent plot and pacing. Next to last book in the series.

I will update my review when finished. But right as soon as the book starts I'm hooked, alot going on, I'm soaking it all up. Refreshing to hear a main character at the start!

As this is the third book in Joshua Gayou’s Commune Series, I thought I’d take a look back at my reviews of the first two installments. Of the first book I said it was an “excellent first book by a new author.” By the second book, I had dropped the “by a new author” caveat and said that it was simply remarkable. And now, with Commune Book 3, I can faithfully say it is extraordinary. And I’ll add that I believe it is on par with some of the best writers I’ve read, and easily surpasses just about anything else I’ve ever read in the post-apacolyptic genre. That was a long-winded way of saying C3 is the best one so far. In this one, Mr. Gayou shakes things up a bit with a shift in perspective, switching to third-person narrative versus the multiple-POV first person format of the first two books. It’s immediately evident why he has done so. The story world has expanded, to include narrative threads from people and groups beyond the titular commune. But the change in format also gives Gayou the opportunity to fully stretch his wings as a storyteller. And the result is…well, as I said, nothing short of extraordinary. In addition to the commune members we already know, we’re introduced to a host of new characters (and wow, what characters they are!). With the third-person perspective, the author is no longer stuck inside the head of the POV character. This allows him to paint a picture of every scene that is crisp, vivid, and memorable. And the characters are brought to life in technicolor. Now we, the reader, get to see their own narrow perspectives (or their unreliable memories of events, as the previous books were fashioned as re-tellings by each character), and see every side of each conversation, including a drone’s-eye-view of the POV character, his/her behavior, mannerisms and appearance. And Gayou seems to have an inexhaustible supply of character material to draw on, as the depth and detail of these varied personalities is astonishing. And my god are these characters entertaining! From heart-wrenching moments that leave you on the brink of tears, to hilariously disgusting antics that will leave your sides splitting. These are some of the most memorable characters I’ve read. One gets the sense that Mr. Gayou isn’t simply showing off. He has a rare talent in sketching these people, but there seems to be a profound reason for this, which we can feel ratcheting up tighter and tigher as the story progresses. Everything is coming to a head at some point. And Mr. Gayou is setting us all up for a fall. He’s doing a masterful job of investing us in these people (both the good guys and bad, I might add), so that the stakes are ever higher when the proverbial feces finally hits the fan.I won’t spoil any of the plot for you (surely you’ve already read C1 and C2 if you’re considering reading Commune 3). I’ll just say that C3 is a riveting continuation of the story line, expands the cast and , stress-tests a few of the characters (both old and new), and gives more background on some of the more mysterious cast members.Commune 3 is extraordinary. If I could give it 6 stars, I would.

There seem to be a great many books out there about the apocalypse. I'm not sure what this means. I believe the first one was by Jack London, "The Red Plague." The basic storyline hasn't changed much: A plague wipes out most of the human race, those left struggle to survive. What's different about Commune is that the author addresses some of the real problems of ordinary people surviving in a changed world. Some have specialized survival skills, but few have more than one. There's no one left who can fight like a Marine, farm like a farmer, build like an engineer, and perform medical surgery. People have to get together and form groups. They have to cooperate. The author presents a wide variety of characters, some more essential to the novel than others. He explores each of them at depth. I heard the first two books in this series as audiobooks and read the third in Kindle. I await the next installment. The books are well written and thoughtful. Please don't be put off by the genre. This is what they call literature.

There wasn't anything earth-shattering in this book as far as plot twist or a new take on apocalyptic storylines. But, if you're someone like me, that really enjoys those storylines, you probably read plenty that weren't very well written. This series of three books was good enough that I read them all in one weekend. And I'm a busy mom with two kids. There were some sections that provided what I think or probably detailed explanations of some of the techniques the characters worked out as they learned how to live in this post apocalyptic, low technology world. I'll admit I skimmed over some of this. I'm not a prepper but overall I thought there was a good balance of storyline character development and detailed descriptions of what the characters were learning as they went.

Another great book from this author! One of the best in post-apocalyptic (PA) fiction! I love how the story is developing, how the people are real, not all good or all bad. I'm still wondering about one of the main characters though, lol. I read a lot of PA, and a lot of it is trash, or the same storyline, pretty black and white, with the remarkable amount of doctors, veterinarians, agricultural experts, weapons experts, this series is about what could be your neighbors. Makes it much more interesting. I am following this author because he is a wonderful storyteller!

I really liked the first two, but this one felt off the mark. Jake is beginning to be dull because of how overly “mysterious” he is. And what exactly does Otter want with the Jackson people? His premise of absorbing them is absurd...does he suddenly just no longer believe in free will? It just felt odd and forced. Bummed because the first two were so great and I couldn’t wait to see where it would leave.

If you liked World War Z (the book...definitely not the movie), you will enjoy the entire Commune series. I blew threw them all and each one is actually pretty good so far (I’ve read a lot of garbage in my days). The story is addictive and the characters are interesting (gotta say Billy will always be a favorite of mine). The only bad thing is that now we have to wait for the final book. It’s killing me!I started with the audiobook for the first one but reading 2 and 3 still had me hooked.

Read lots of series, but this is, by far the best! Amazing characters and never ending scenarios....the most realistic take on what would happen and what should happen...Gayon has a way with words...you care about what happens to these people....please don't let the story stop here!

Books in the Commune Series keep getting better and better, and that's after starting out great. I read book 3 in kindle format because I couldn't wait for the audio version to come out and I plowed through it. (It's a page swiper.)In book 3 familiar characters are back, but worlds collide and the challenges of survival in a post-apocalyptic landscape become increasingly fierce.
