I purchased this text and the Learn Visual Basic to help me brush up on my programming skills and add the database knowledge. I have just begun but have already found the format to be perfect for me! The textbooks are so inviting with the larger print and excellent graphics. There are files that you download from the Internet if you purchased a new copy used to complete the lessons. I had an issue downloading using Internet Explorer 11. Using Chrome resolved the problem.I can hardly put these books down! They are beautifully written, logical, and easy to follow.I know the knowledge obtained from these courses will be valuable in my workplace.
I love this paperback book; I'm flabbergasted by it. I love it so much I came back and bought the other edition "Learn Visual Basic". Disclaimer: I am not a true programmer, I only dabble in it for work as it is needed. However, I have purchased many programming books over the years and this is, for me anyway, the best by far. Everything about this book is large, in a good way. The pages are big and the print is in a large font for easy reading. The pages are not so filled that it overwhelms you with being too busy. There is plenty of white space on the pages for writing notes. None of those distracting cutesy side notes attempting humor. A+ for Philip Conrod and Lou Tylee.
After reading numerous books on databases and visual basic this is the first one that has made me confident about using visual basic with databases. Used with the authors other book "Learn Visual Basic" it has at last allowed me to be one step closer to actually understanding what you have to do to be able to code real and useful apps in VB. The teaching is straightforward and easily absorbed and the practice and exercise are repetitive enough to take in the material without being boring.
After reading several books to learn . Net, VB, SQL, ADO. Net and MS Visual Studio, finally I found one book which helped me to grasp and master concepts of database programming in applications. THANK YOU Authors, for the simple style of writing and presenting the correct concepts at the correct time so learning was easy.
Extremely helpful with easy to read text. I wish it had an index at the end, though, but you can't have everything. Thanks to this book, I am developing my own Windows Aps and have written for and made happy several clients. Good learning book.

Their examples reflect real-world applications that will help new developers quickly master database software development. Students can easily convert and expand the examples for their own applications. For example, the Books Database in Chapter 4 could easily be modified to search a similar database of cars, bikes, or passwords, etc.Examples are created using Microsoft’s Access database management system (DBMS) and SQL Server. This makes it easy for the student to compare their capabilities and syntax.I have sincerely enjoyed reading and working through the examples in, “Visual Basic and Databases: A Step-By-Step Database Programming Tutorialâ€. The examples are clear and easy to follow. If I had any questions or if my code did not work I could simply peek at the authors’ completed code examples to get back on track.Throughout the book the authors bring attention to the importance of user interface (UI) design. This is more important than may be obvious at first but developers tend to focus on the code and forget about the UI but eventually someone needs to use this program so a functional and attractive presentation of the program can be the difference between success and failure of the end product.A major plus for this text is how the authors include additional and very useful parallel topics such as the On-Line Help system created in HTML in Chapter 5 and the Graphics Methods in Chapter 7. The book is not about HTML or graphics but the coincidental inclusion gives the student a valuable glimpse at other topics of importance. These are just two examples that didn’t have to be included but they are added as part of other chapters and will ultimately benefit the student. This took a lot of forethought by the authors and demonstrates the real value of the book.As a programmer, a long-time college professor, and as the former head of the Computer, Engineering, and Business Department, I have reviewed countless programming books for most of the popular programming languages. “Visual Basic and Databases: A Step-By-Step Database Programming Tutorial†by Conrod and Tylee is my favorite text for helping developers make the leap into the rewarding field of database development. A true classic. This startled the “graphic novel†as we know it. Comics were no longer a kids medium (though writers like frank miller were also seeing to that.) Really delves into the lives of poor folk, specifically Jews in New York during Eisners formative years. The first story is by far the best and takes a lot of what Judaism is and turns it into an accessible format.
I wanted to better acquaint myself with the "graphic novel" genre, so chose this title from a recommended list. I expected prolonged "comic book reading," but got engaging stories. The sepia colored illustrations added to the 1930's feel. Did not expect the nudity after reading the first story, nor domestic violence or rape.
The stories are painfully honest and the artwork full of rich detail. If you don’t know Eisner's work, this an outstanding introduction to the master at the height of his talents.It isn’t for kids—it deals with adult subjects and the art doesn’t pull any punches.
R. Crumb calls it comix. Jules Feiffer called it junk art. Will Eisner gives it the ugly-sounding title of sequential art. A popular name for it now is graphic fiction. What DOES one call the genre in which Eisner was such a pioneer?Eisner tells us that his goal in A Contract with God, a book that has become famous for being the "first" graphic novel, was to create an art work in which there is "no interruption in the flow of narrative because the picture and the text are so totally dependent on each other as to be inseparable" (preface). This is a hard trick to pull off. Equally difficult is the task of telling a coherent story that many readers will (unfavorably) judge using the standards that they apply to novels or short stories. Whatever else a graphic novel is, it doesn't fall in either of those genres. The graphic novel is much more impressionistic, more minimalistic, than even a short short story can afford to be.Eisner takes the bull by the horns in this ground-breaking book, and puts not one but four separate stories between one cover. His artwork truly is breathtaking, pretty nearly succeeding in the uninterrupted flow he's aiming at. The stories themselves are uneven in quality, and each of them, with the possible exception of the last one ("Cookalein"), tend toward the maudlin in places. Moreover, the most ambitious of them, the title story, seems especially underdeveloped. It may be that the potential depth of the story simply can't be expressed in this genre. At the same time, though, each of them captures, in a way reminiscent of the stories of Isaac Bashevis Singer, something of the flavor of Jewish city life in the 1930s.All in all, Eisner's book is both an historical landmark in the evolution of junk art, sequential art, graphic fiction, or whatever we eventually call it, as well as a collection of stories that are still very readable and artistically commendable.
I don't like the term Graphic Novel, because I believe it was invented as a marketing too to somehow elevate modern comics up and away from their predecessors. And really, most of them aren't novels, they are memoir. So if you're going to adopt some fancy literary term, get it right. That said, if you want to know the origins of a great literary art form, you need to know the great Will Eisner. This is an amazing work, from an amazing cartoonist who taught those who came after him all they needed to know. Read and learn.
Amazing graphic novel. I can't emphasis enough the "novel" aspect, as the (ever universal) themes and the stories reminded me of short stories read in non-graphic novel books.I just love Eisner's style, graphically. It is full of life.Living in NYC myself, I can't help thinking I am getting a glimpse of what life was in the Lower East Side at the time.
Very interesting book to read. Had to get if for a class, after reading it I wanted to find more books by Will Eisner. If you are looking for a quick read then I suggest taking a look at this book.
Every graphic novel/ comic fan should read this classic. As the first graphic novel in the U.S., Eisner did not disappoint this reader.

This month’s Amazon First Reads, at first glance, was not impressive in the least. I pored through the blurbs three times before selecting “The Broken Circle.†I was not in the mood for a memoir, especially of a woman from another country. For such a story, thought I, all I needed was to recollect meeting, courting, then marrying my wife, while I lived and worked in Egypt. The primary difference, in my mind, was my spouse was an Egyptian Christian, and the author of this book was an Afghani Muslim woman, now living in Texas. Just seemed a little too close to home for me, at this time.Brother, was I ever wrong. “The Broken Circle†is now my favorite memoir. Even more touching than was “Never Stop Walking,†or “Three Against the Wilderness.â€Try this on for size: If you loved Patrick Swayze in “Red Dawn,†or the primary story of “Sound of Music†with Julie Andrews, you will have a front row seat into Enjeela’s early childhood during the late 1970’s and 1980’s. At this point, just let her story creep into your subconscious…The only way this story could have been better appreciated, by me, would be to have listened to her narrate it as an Audible Edition.Now, on with my review…BLUSH FACTOR: There is no reason to shy away from reading this to anybody you like. No profanities, wild sex or gratuitous violence. In fact, I would home everybody would form circles of friends and kin and take turns reading this aloud as an inspiration to us to do God’s will.WRITING & EDITING: As with many memoirs, the early going can seem a trifle slow. However, the writing and editing are professional and the story unfolds in a manner to ensure maximum effect. Slow as the start was, it was sensitive enough that I found a tear or two trying to escape. Then, I came to page 68 and knew I loved this story and the dream, if it was a dream, Enjeela chose to share with the world. (See the excerpt below).POV: First person.Excerpt:‘…It was one of these freezing winter nights that I saw the man with the white horse.He walked right out of Ahmad Shah’s closet toward me. He was an old man, a very old man, with a long white beard, and his clothes matched the brilliant white of his horse, who had a princely saddle, full mane, and a bushy tail. He stood tall and strong next to the man. At first I was certain they were ghosts. But we had been telling ghost stories all night long, so then I thought I must be asleep and it was a dream.“I can see you,†I said to him.The man stopped and stared down at me. He held the horse’s reins as if he were taking it out for a midnight ride to see what was left of the city.“Are you awake?†he said, a lilt of surprise in his voice.I told him I was. “Who are you?†I asked, suspecting already that I might know who he was.“You can see me, little one?â€I sat up and nodded. He was as real to me as my sisters and brother sleeping beside me.“You must be very special to see me. No one sees me.†He smiled at me and tugged on the reins of the horse. “I must go,†he said. “Go back to sleep before the others wake up.†His voice was warm and caring. None of the others even stirred.Before he left the room, he turned to me. “Don’t tell anyone you’ve seen me.â€â€œI won’t.†I watched him disappear back into the darkness of the closet.The next morning, I woke up slowly as I tried to make sense of my dream. It had to have been a dream, but it was so real, so alive. The bearded man in white had been so close to me, and I thought I could smell the musty odor of a sweaty horse.I saw him several more times before we moved. He told me many times how special I was that I could see him, and for the first time I understood that specialness as something I could do that my sisters and Zia couldn’t—I could see the bearded man with his white horse and warm smile and gentle voice.Ahmadi-Miller, Enjeela. Beautifully written...the author has a way of transporting you to her homeland and sways you to see Afghanistan as a beautiful place that was overthrown and crushed by horrible events. It educates you on why some people stayed and others fled. I can't imagine the tough decisions that those parents had to make for their children. Great book definitely recommend it!
Most of the book was quite engaging and stunning in it's detail of a horrendous trial of emigration. Did not care for the ending which centered on buying fancy clothes and shopping instead of introspection about what had transpired traveling for the 2 or more years out of Afghanistan. The siblings she had endured countless challenges with in their escape were virtually ignored at the end after settling in India and only mentioned once in passing. I felt it was a slap in the face to them especially after all they had been through. It was like they disappeared off the face of the earth and she fawned over the sister who was whisked away in a plane as a baby and led the charmed life in comparison. I felt like the long escape was written by a ghost writer and the beginning and end written by the author as it was so different. Lots of things not said which make me suspicious: Mysterious contacts, lots of money everywhere but no jobs, lack of compassion for other members of the family, mysterious access to America--to me it was a sad ending in what it didn't say. How were 4 children living alone able to live in a Pakistan hotel for 6 months and have the money to pay for it. Where did they hide that much money on a trip through the six month trip through the mountains of Afghanistan and keep it throughout their 6 months in Pakistan. Too many kinks in the story which takes away from the real struggle of refugees.
This is a beautifully written account of life in Afghanistan before it became a Wharton country. Through the eyes of a five-year-old girl we see her comfortable life, in a large Muslim family in Kabul. Then democracy and peace are shattered, first with civil turmoil, and then by the invasion of the Russian army. Her security is rattled when her mother and 2 siblings leave for India. The remaining four children have to care for themselves, because their father, who works for the American embassy , is consumed with work and then seeks his own comfort in alcohol. Soviet tanks rumble down their street, and life is unsafe. Where is Mommy? Will she ever come back? Eventually Father arranges for a guide to smuggle the children to Pakistan. Really enjoyed this. I’m not one for non fiction much less a memoir but this book has great pacing and I was completely wrapped up in the tale. I finished in 2 days. I have already recommended this to my friends.
As another reviewer said, I was not real taken with any of the free books for Prime readers this month, but I settled on The Broken Circle as I love memoirs. I was not disappointed. This was a great book. I finished it in just over a day, could not put it down. I also have to thank the author for introducing me to the poetry of Hafiz. Her father quotes it to her and the one about "How Birds Fly" appealed to me so much I had to write it down. I wish the author would write a sequel because I would like to know about their emigration to the United States and where the family all settled. It's unbelievable the trek she took as a little girl to get out of Afghanistan.

The melodies are very nice. The tab is clear. The book is in English even though he speaks Italian. Not for absolute beginner, but if you can play fingerstyle seems approachable and rewarding to play, hence my comment about medium/intermediate. Also Be aware, there songs are in standard and various open tunings including dadgad. I like this as a supplement to my current pursuit of dadgad I have corresponded with the authorand he really seems. like and honest and sincere guy. If you are interested in Celtic/Irish guitar I whole heartedly recommend.
