Todd Smith brings the hockey knowledge of a second-generation lifer (maybe his grandfather was even hockey strong; I wouldn’t be surprised), a great ear for quotes from the array of NHL studs he interviewed, and a sick, unbelievable trunk of stories about mashed faces, busted eye-sockets, bone fractures, and steam shovel fists! He’s got it all: wonderful writing, blast-quick slapshot anecdotes, tons of action, and more than enough hockey knowledge to teach even the most die hard, 4AM rink time skater a thing or seven about the game he or she loves.Buy one for yourself and one for each your favorite hockey fans. They’ll be sure to give you an awesome Xmas gift come December in return!

This engrossing, entertaining, well written book, defines the game and its players better than anything else I have read. You don't hear or read about these accounts via the news media and it gave me a greater appreciation for a game I already love. A great read!

Whether you are a life long hockey fan or a newbie, this book details the sacrifice and hard work that professional hockey players endure. Spanning decades, Todd documents , via primary and secondary sources , a narrative that encompasses the determination of what it means to make the NHL and stay in it. This is a series of stories that parallels human nature In that regardless of background, ethnicity or DNA we adapt to the environment presented to us in order to survive. Plus - Knuckles Nilan is the Bee's balls!

A great book! My wife bought it for me and I couldn't put it down. If you're a hockey fan or know one, get this book for them. Well written with lots of great stories about the physical sacrifices hockey players make to play the game, life in the NHL and hockey in general.

I didn't pick this book out for the hockey. I was drawn to the book as a competitor with some degree of relatable toughness that is described so well in this book. Hockey Strong is a serious page turner that will make you laugh, appreciate, and... snarl.

Gift for my son who loves reading about hockey.

If you want a book about players beating up each other, this is it. However if you want to read about the game of hockey and its players I recommend many of the biographies out there.

I bought this for a gift for a hockey fan, so I don't know about the writing. The book was bound up side down. Since I needed it right away I won't be returning it, as my grandson will read it anyway.

Nathan Bedford Forrest: A Biography, by Jack Hurst

Amazon.com Review

Nathan Bedford Forrest was the only soldier to rise from the rank of private to general during the U.S. Civil War. At once "a soft-spoken gentleman of marked placidity and an overbearing bully of homicidal wrath," Forrest is best remembered for the combination of brilliant military leadership and flamboyant bravery that drove his Confederate cavalry troops from victory to victory on the battlefield. His subordinates feared him (he shot those who turned tail), as did his enemies (he rarely lost a fight). General Sherman once said that Forrest must be "hunted down and killed if it costs 10,000 lives and bankrupts the [national] treasury." Detractors point out that Forrest never has been exonerated from the Fort Pillow massacre, in which many Union soldiers, most of them black, were slaughtered after attempting to surrender. Following the war, he went on to found the Ku Klux Klan. Late in life, however, Forrest disavowed racial hatred and called for black political advancement. Author Jack Hurst has written the essential biography of a complex and compelling man who was arguably the Civil War's most remarkable soldier. (Movie trivia: Forrest Gump's mother named her son after this general.)

From the Inside Flap

Amid the aristocratic ranks of the Confederate cavalry, Nathan Bedford Forrest was untutored, all but unlettered, and regarded as no more than a guerrilla. His tactic was the headlong charge, mounted with such swiftness and ferocity that General Sherman called him a "devil" who should "be hunted down and killed if it costs 10,000 lives and bankrupts the treasury." And in a war in which officers prided themselves on their decorum, Forrest habitually issued surrender-or-die ultimatums to the enemy and often intimidated his own superiors. After being in command at the notorious Fort Pillow Massacre, he went on to haunt the South as the first grand wizard of the Ku Klux Klan. Now this epic figure is restored to human dimensions in an exemplary biography that puts both Forrest's genius and his savagery into the context of his time, chronicling his rise from frontiersman to slave trader, private to lieutenant general, Klansman to -- eventually -- New South businessman and racial moderate. Unflinching in its analysis and with extensive new research, Nathan Bedford Forrest is an invaluable and immensely readable addition to the literature of the Civil War.

Fair and honest biography of a well renowned and tactically respected Confederate leader. The author presents a well researched book about a complicated individual during a complicated time. Forrest's contribution to the proper application of his cavalry tactics are still as much pertinent with today's armored cavalry as then. There is no doubt that the South recognized and utilized the cavalry genius of Forrest as true "Wizard of the Saddle." His employment and direction of his cavalry units' actions all through the South are justified by the inordinate amount of forces and resources the Union had to commit to try to defeat him. The controversy of Fort Pillow is explained clearly and factually from archival sources by Mr. Hurst, and depending upon which side you take, will never be fully understood or clarified. As you can ascertain from the statements of witnesses and newspaper accounts from the time leave much to be debated still. There is no doubt Bedford Forrest participated in the forming of the klan and took a role in it's leadership, and the author presents the facts of his involvement clearly and accurately. Forrest's active participation in the klan is fairly portrayed, and the explanation of Forrest's eventual dissatisfaction of the klan's actions and his disengagement from the group is also brought to the fore. As a study of a life from meager beginnings to brilliant military career and controversial post-war activities, this book is an excellent addition to any library of American Civil War history.

Read that this is one of the best biographies of NBF. I will agree with many of the reviewers...EXCELLENT READ!!! If these stories are true then I want to travel back in time and meet this man! This book details the life of Nathan Bedford Forrest. Like most history, as time goes on we learn new things. I always enjoyed the tactics of NBF but to know "who he was" is depicted by Jack Hurst. Hurst does an amazing job detailing everything found (at least known) about the General and the person. Hurst is able to put together the pieces without bias and tell a story of a man who most of history maybe got wrong, or at least parts.I am an amatuer Civil War buff and reading this book not only educated me on NBF but also explained reasons why and how certain things occured.A must-read for and Civil War OR history fan!

This is simply the best of the 6 studies of Forrest I have read so far. It explores and examines his life from childhood through to his death. His behaviour is not excused but his life is viewed through the looking glass of context. Forrest was a slave trader. So many pro Forrest works attempt to paint him as a slave trading saint, others condemn him for choosing that road of commerce. Slave trading was at the time legitimate it happened, Forrest participated. Other events, such as Fort Pillow are not dealt with as well but given Forrest's [sometimes violent] character the author offers the best possible explanation of the events that can be properly discerned.Forrest's participation in the KKK is well researched, his attempts to disband that organisation are also examined. No saint, but no devil either. An excellent study of a complex character, multi faceted, not simple and certainly remarkable.

This is a thoroughly and impressively researched book. I do not share the admiration for this man that many other reviewers do. As this book documents, he certainly had a lot of courage and temerity, and that was about it. He made his fortune selling other human beings and then squandered it fighting a war to retain the right to secure the institution of owning human beings into perpetuity. It was obvious that he had no real business sense because once he was out of the slave selling business he did not know how to make money and went broke. Reading his evasive answers to questions about his relationship to the Klan was painful. The man was clearly a liar and in his last days was trying hard to sustain his diminishing reputation after the war was over. His late life conversion to Christianity, while it may have been sincere, was simply the last gasp of a morally scrambled reprobate.

Fair and balanced. Forest was a good moral and complicated man. Who though lacking a formal education was a military genius. He was fair man for that time period in the south. He received a lot of unfair criticalism for the Fort Pillow affair, Fault lies with both sides for the excessive killing and bloodshed. Taunting by the colored Union soldiers in the beginning of the engagement, and later surrendering, then picking up weapons joining the fight again. Thus giving the confederates an excuse to resume the killing. There was a lot of hatred on both sides. The book covers the changes Gen. Forrest, his change of heart in the speech to his command after their surrender to be good citizens and obey the law. I think this is a fair and balanced account of a very special, complicated man of history and the time he lived in.
