This story takes Kinsey away from her Southern California coastal town of Santa Teresa to the small mountain community of Nota Lake in the Sierras. There, Selma Newquist hires Kinsey to ferret out the problem that had been seriously bothering her cop husband, Tom, before his recent death from a heart attack. Kinsey's efforts are soon stonewalled as the residents of Nota Lake unite, suggesting that the widow is being troublesome while the good-guy cop should be left to rest in peace. Kinsey wonders whether the townspeople might be right until she is seriously beaten up in her Nota Lake motel room. Focusing on finding the dead man's missing notebook, she follows his trail to a seedy hotel not far from Santa Teresa that he visited a few weeks before his death. While keeping a suspicious eye on the dead man's police partner and a few other local figures, Kinsey determines that Tom Newquist had been investigating an old murder near Nota Lake, which may have had ties to a similar, recent murder. Lots of coincidences, some over-the top characters, including a hyper-raunchy older woman, and some unprepared-for elements contribute to the rather chaotic climax. Well, maybe a 3.5 Star - but NOT a 4 Star. Honestly, I was very excited about getting to know Kinsey Milhone the female private investigator. She seemed smart, sharp and strong. But then about half way she became and weak bodied and weak minded female and I wondered what happened to author - did she start writing "O" before finishing "N"? It was like she brushed her aside and made her stupid. Heck, even I was beginning to figure out the plot half way through it and that's not what an author really wants. Too much time and emphasis on the surrounding landscapes and people descriptions and personality assumptions got boring. AND then the holes in the plot - like what you might ask? Well, who made the acid laced brownies in the fridge? That was never covered. Come on, would a guest in your house really go in and eat a wrapped dessert?
"Noose" was certainly not at the top of my list in the alphabet series.Some miss the familiar locations and characters. I didn't mind that. What I didn't like was the story really went nowhere. It's a bit of a departure from Ms. Grafton's norm and I don't think it worked. There's a lot of tedious dialogue in which the reader can just skim through.The same basic story is told repeatedly, in different words, until some things start to gel. But, that's late in the book. Around 91%. The ending has a predictable twist, as well as dangling loose ends.I like the character of Kinsey and that kept me reading. In all fairness, if you're going to do a series like this you're bound to have a weak novel or two. This is one of them. Fear not, others that follow are better.
"N" is for Noose: A Kinsey Millhone Novel Was somewhat below par for the Kinsey Millhone alphabet series. The case was bizarre, the plot moved slowly in places, and the ending was a major stretch.OK if you are dedicate to reading the whole series (2.5 stars), but otherwise it's a little below average as a mystery.In case you're interested, here are my ratings for the alphabet mysteries I've read to date.Top tier (4.5 - 5 stars) - B, F, I, MMiddle tier (3-4 stars) - A, C, D, E, HLower tier (2-3 stars) - G, L, NAs you can see, I'm working on the whole series, and they're all fair to very good. BTW, I think individual books in the series can be read as standalone without confusion.
You just can't beat a Sue Grafton mystery, including this one. When a sheriff's investigator dies suddenly of a heart attack, his wife is tormented not just by the sudden loss of her husband but also because the last weeks of his life were unhappy, stressful ones -- and she wants to know why.That kind of case is right up private investigator Kinsey Millhone's alley, and she begins a dogged campaign to find the answers to her client's questions.I finished the book in one long night when I first read it years ago, and it was no less riveting as I listened to it in this audiobook.If you're discovering it for the first time, you won't be disappointed. And if you're rediscovering it, as I was, oh happy days -- it's just as good as you remember.
I've been reading Grafton's alphabet series for years. I like this sassy PI and can always depend on her getting herself into an impossible and dangerous situation and when all seems lost, she rises triumphant and solves the case. As always tHis book kept me turning pages to the end, but somehow the whole rational of the plot wasn't one of Grafton's best. But if you like her books, you won't hold it against her, anymore than I do...it's on to "O." Reading all the way through Z is on my bucket list, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Grafton makes it too!
Plot was decent. Story moved along well. Kinsey usually is smart but she was very talkative at points in the story that were very stupid. Have read most of this series and liked it. Fun to get back to it after a long absence.
Way too much description. I could scan pages trying to find out what the book was about. If she went in a room, she told what color of the walls, curtains, chairs....etc. then the person appeared and then she described them to a "T". Just too much description for me.
Thank you, Sue Grafton. These are books that promise not only a satisfying read, but can always be counted on to deliver what I call mystery/crime lite. Not "lightweight", but happily devoid of gratuitous or dark violence and sex. N is for Noose has a special flavor. The sense of place was so real I was there; smelling, shivering, and feeling it. That part of California is so authentically western, usually cold, and beautifully desolate. She really nailed it. The gloom of the setting was offset effectively by Kinsey's very human addiction to comfort foods, fears, and struggles to summon the courage to tackle a daunting set of circumstances. Definitely not a fast-paced thriller, but a story that I wished lingered for another 100 pages.

Book is cute but not for a younger girl. For a 6 or 7 yr old at least.
I'm sure it's my fault, but I thought this was a book for little kids and assumed it would be bright and colorful with lots of pictures. It's not. Its just a regular book. Probably better suited for older kids.

My 10 year old son loved this set. He has always struggled with reading, so I buy him any and all Minecraft books he asks for. He has started to have an opinion on authors that he likes and those he does not. This one he definitely likes. He was excited each day after school and at bedtime to get back into this story. I even caught him several times reading this series at doctor offices, in the car, etc, when he had free range to play games on his tablet. I've never seen him read so fast and so often! Now he wants all the other Minecraft books from this author. I highly recommend for the Minecrafter in your life.
Much cheaper than buying all 9 books individually. These book is huge and very heavy and my 9 year old insisted on carrying it to school every day to read during reading time. He was extremely proud of himself when he finished it and loves telling people he read a 600 page book.
My 7 year old grandson is loving this big book. He is reading it on his own every day. He digs everything Minecraft so this definitely keeps his attention. It doesn't have a bunch of pictures and it is very think so he feels like a really big boy reading and "adult" book. hahah

I liked this book because some of the things are in Minecraft but some of them are not. The story was breathtaking with anadventurous main character.
Books 1-9 come together in one big book, which was a little disappointing. But my little brother loved them!! They’re really funny and great for anyone who loves Minecraft
Dr Block has created a great cast of characters and has sent them on a cool adventure. I really enjoyed this book. I plan to give it to a friend for Christmas.

About the Author
P Moss is a longtime Las Vegan whose cocktail pedigree includes ownership of Frankie's Tiki Room, as well as the Double Down Saloons in Las Vegas and New York City. A former bartender, he learned early on that cocktail service is best left to those who have the temperament for it. He is a musician and songwriter whose band Bloodcocks UK recently sold out tours of both Japan and Great Britain. He is author of the well-received books Blue Vegas and Vegas Knockout.

I bought the Smuggler's Cove book first, and after going through many of its cocktail recipes I wanted to branch out and try some different tiki cocktails. I think the recipes in Smuggler's Cove are of significantly higher quality. Both books use a lot of ingredients that may be difficult to come by, but the author of this book relies a lot more on artificially flavored spirits, which is not something I am a fan of. If you're looking for great tiki cocktails, I recommend Smuggler's Cove over this one.
Frakie's Tiki Lounge is one of Las Vegas's greatest hidden treasures. If you're not in Vegas or the South Pacific or get freaked out by shrunken heads; this wonderful collection of Frankie's magical elixirs, will excite and alter your palette, your psyche, your ability to speak or operate machinery, and instantly transform your living room into a tropical paradise. (Headhunters not included)
Frankie's Tiki Room is an off the strip gem in Las Vegas and this book conveys the essence of the bar without having to book a flight to Nevada. However, I do recommend you make that trip as Frankie's is not to be missed. It provides background into the Tiki history of Vegas and provides many recipes for original and classic cocktails. The recipes in this book are great for someone who is new to Tiki or is trying to make drinks that can be made with ingredients that the average person can find without much difficulty.
What can be said about perfection? P Moss showcases 60 original cocktails from Frankie's Tiki Room. Each drink is represented by its recipe on one page and a beautifully staged photograph on its adjacent page. Each drink is awarded with its own "fun" rating and a quick, whimsical introduction. For instance, the Sea Hag (p.114) merits three "skulls" and is introduced thus: "A tangy thirst-quencher that will give you the magical power to make those around you disappear." Wow! Other sample entries include: Lovey's Revenge, Scurvy, and Thurston Howl. Of course, the book includes 17 tiki drink classics with given recipes and photos (one drink per page). Beyond the stunning drink photograph/recipe mix, the book dedicates a few pages to showcasing original Frankie's Tiki Mugs. But that's not all! This book provides the reader with a short and not boring history of tiki-themed bars of Las Vegas and of the origins of Frankie's Tiki Room in particular. In essence, this book represents the highest of lowbrow tiki mixology. Not a ring binder bar guide, this book is meant as a functional art piece on par with an Ansel Adams coffee table book. Looking at one stunning picture after another induces a wistfulness in this mostly teetotaler reviewer.5 Skulls!!!
I have frequented Frankie's on several occasions. When I saw they had written a cocktail book, I was overjoyed. It did not disappoint. If you're looking for excellent tiki drink recipes, this is the book for you. Be aware though, this is not for those looking at quick drinks. Be prepared to put some time and effort into the drinks.
I bought this book for a family member, when I looked through it I thought that is sounded very cool. To my surprise I was given the same book as a gift too. Going to make lots of good tropical drinks!
