I have a love hate relationship with this book. It is exactly what is says: Concise. The book begins with a general discussion of anatomy and morphology and then delves into an approximate 25 page discussion over each type of tooth (incisors, canines, etc...). It then goes into root morphology, primary teeth and dental anomalies. The book is only around 200 pages.You look at it and think: man that couldn't be that hard; however, after reading it you realize why it is only 200 pages. 90% of the book is simply a very detailed description of the tooth, no more no less. The book has pictures in the margins (haha...) that accompany the descriptive text.The pictures are nice, but very few are actually labeled. So sometimes you find yourself looking at a tooth and saying, "Is this the mesial view or distal, buccal or lingual, etc..." This seems to be a common theme in dental anatomy textbooks and I think this is its greatest drawback.The other big drawback is the organization of the sections. I found it exceedingly difficult to locate the exact description when reviewing material. It has letters, roman numerals and numbers dividing up subsections over the teeth, and there are no lines dividing the pages, nor bolded words and very few underlined words. So when you want to review what the mesial view of X tooth looks like, you have to dig a little and find that subheading hidden in the page. There are no charts either, which I find one of the most effective ways of learning material where topics are closely related.The descriptions are good, but at times a little wordy. I have found a few mistakes, but nothing too big. Overall, this book is acceptable and doesn't throw in any clinical correlations and has few superlatives (like MOST common missing tooth, LEAST common, etc...). Our tests ask us mostly questions that have to be inferred from the text because the text does not ponder on clinical correlates or have many comparisons between teeth. In addition, it does not have (and you shouldn't expect it to have) occlusion.The book is a dense read, and I have to read each chapter twice to really absorb the information. It is definitely adequate for basic dental anatomy and learning what the teeth (should) look like. I think it is a solid 3 stars, but not more.

Very interesting story about an ancient manuscript. The Aleppo Codex was thought destroyed after riots surrounding the creation of the State of Israel. A decade later at least some of it arrived in Israel. Under some shady circumstances that have been obscured for decades it became the property of a state institution with ties to the then President of Israel. At some point after this it was discovered a large portion was in fact missing. Periodic interest has heated up several times, but no real answers and the eyewitnesses are already gone or near to. Very interesting saga and an engaging examination of the story that is the Aleppo Codex. While the treatment of Israeli actions in the aftermath seems balanced, the discussion of the foundation of the country and the reaction of the world to it are unabashedly and unquestionably pro Israel. It grated a little at times otherwise I would have given 5 stars.
Journalist and author, Matti Friedman details the history and the journey of one of the greatest books in Jewish Biblical Literature. The Codex, known as the Aram-Tzova, and later, the Aleppo Crown, originated in Tiberius in 930CE. Scholars painstakingly copied in an exact and precise replication, each and every letter, each and every vowel, and each and every word of the Tanach, the Hebrew Bible. The express purpose of the Codex was to insure that Jews in the Diaspora would have only one exact Bible for every Jewish community throughout the world, as singularity and unification was ultimately the only possibility for the survival of Judaism. The Codex, meant to be a reference guide, issued as a bound book rather than a rolled scroll. Mattie Friedman’s non-fiction work offers a wealth of information on Jewish history, and though slows in parts, bogged down in detail, ultimately brings to light the fate of the treasured and beloved, priceless Crown of Aleppo.
The Aleppo CodexThe mystery of the 1000 yr old parchment holy book (Hebrew Bible) is tragic and sad. A few of the missing pages were found, but many were believed stolen, whole books in fact. Secrecy, lies and descriptions are part of its history.Thought to have been damaged by a fire set by rioters in 1947, it was actually a fungus that discolored the pages. Its remaining parts, left deteriorating in a cabinet, were eventually restored. The codex should have been return to the Aleppo Community to whom it belonged. Perhaps then the whole codex would be in one place.
This is an amazing story. I love science fiction but this true story beats almost anything and it's true. More twists plots and characters than any fiction writer could manage. Including a death that might be murder! A morality tale of the venality and corruption that people and governments are capable of when an object of great value comes into play. A sad commentary on the people involved in a country that could have been a "light onto the world"; or purported to be that. The obfuscation and disappearing documents had nothing to do with national of personal security; but resulted in flagellant violations of the mandates enclosed in the very item they coveted, desired and should have been a basis for unifying a country and religion.
This book had many twists and turns in the author's dogged determination to find out what really happened to this sacred book. Had this not been labeled non-fiction, I would have thought it was fiction. This author takes the reader on his journey to discover the truth. His conclusion as to what happened is unexpected, yet makes sense.
I have been aware of the official, sanitized, history of the Codex, so I was surprised at Friedman's exposure of the apparent theft of the missing pages. Maybe I shouldn't have been surprised at the cover-up by so many academicians, but I found this at least as disturbing as the apparent theft itself. Friedman leads the reader through his own stages of discovery. He writes well and makes a convincing case. Friedman refrains from an actual "j'accuse" moment, but lets the reader draw his own conclusions.
I am still shaking my head, having just finished this book. First of all, since it's a review, this book is written masterfully! It reads like a novel and pulls you through to the end. Second, this story is riveting and sad. Matti Friedman sums it up perfectly as the book ends -- the codex survived centuries through countless eras of destruction and now, during a time when it was "safe," the people who were there to safe guard it and finally give it a home in Jerusalem stole it. It is so hard for me to envision the codex being passed along through generations, only to be "lost" within my generation. I hope this story isn't over and that it surfaces. But, regardless, this book is exceptional!

Tracy Salcedo-Chourre has written Falcon Guidebooks for several years covering Colorado's Rocky Mountains and the area in and around her home in San Francisco's North Bay region. But Tahoe is her true love and it shows on every page of this new guidebook from Falcon Press. If you enjoy the Tahoe region (and who doesn't?) this book will introduce you to some of the many trails in and around the lake. There is some significant overlap with Salcedo-Chourre's Best Easy Day Hikes Lake Tahoe but this book features some longer, more challenging hikes like climbs up Mt. Judah, Mt. Rose, and the extended day hike to Gilmore Lake. But one of the nice features of Falcon's "Best Hikes Near" series is that it allows for far more detail in description (and sketch maps) than books in the "Best Easy Day Hikes" series. Glossy photos, a rich text replete with local and natural history, and green "tips" that manage not to be preachy or trite (and are often simple statements of trail courtesy) are all set comfortably within the text. So are some of my favorite hikes, including the General's Creek Loop, where hikers can learn about the 1960s winter Olympics while exploring the back country of one of California's finest state parks.But as the title implies, this book covers more than just the hikes immediately around Lake Tahoe. Over the years, Reno and Carson City have gradually transformed themselves into outdoor destinations and not just gambling resorts. The land around these cities feature numerous regional parks and a beautiful urban walkway along the Carson River. There are no really good hiking guides to these lands, but this book at the very least provides a good overview of what is out there. And these places are worth exploring, especially when Tahoe trails are still under snow, or worse yet, mud. Most of these trails are fairly short and accessible to just about anyone.After several years of visiting Lake Tahoe, my wife and I decided to purchase a timeshare there. We are glad we did as we now get to visit this spectacular country every year. California has many fine destinations, including Sequoia and Yosemite National Parks, but few places on earth can match the spectacle of viewing Lake Tahoe from almost any vantage point during the evening hours. This book will provide you with many such opportunities, and if you go for the skiing in the winter, it will also offers off season hikes in the Nevada valleys below the lake as well. It is a great book from a great outdoor writer, and well worth the purchase price.
We found this book very helpful and mostly accurate. We did several hikes around Lake Tahoe and found using the GPS coordinates to be the easiest and most accurate input. Except for the hike to the "Lighthouse and Rubicon Point" hike...the coordinates listed took us 2 hours out of the way as we circled around back to where we were staying knowing approximately where we we suppose to go and decided to use the printed directions still causing some confusion. (We came through Tahoe City and there is an 89 South & an 89 South Tahoe) This should have said the 89 South Tahoe. We did enjoy seeing Truckee that we wouldn't have otherwise. We did get a hiking map from one of the park stations and figured out the coordinates should be N38 59.353'/W120 05.915. This just added some additional adventure to our wonderful trip. Would recommend this book to anyone wanting to hike the Lake Tahoe mountains.
Easy to reference, easy to comprehend, excellent format, but could be more detailed for certain hikes!
The best book on hiking I have yet run across. It includes a wealth of hikes in the area, and it does so with incredibly accurate directions, information, maps, and photographs. If you only purchase one book on area hiking this year, let this be the one.
Really worth buying, period!
