I was looking for a layman's explanation of dark matter and dark energy, and this came up on the search. This is actually more of an historic review of the science involved than the actual science, but it is a well written book that gives a good foundation.
Very easy reading and no formulas cloud the reader. I highly recommend this book for the pay person who wants to learn about modern cosmology.
Physics explained for the average person. Nice historical background info included, Very interesting and enjoyable reading. Personally, I would recommend.
Reading by this book, I found myself arguing against the arguments brought forth in some of the chapters, but it was the final chapter on cosmology that I 'got it', what the author was trying to get at, the true state-of-mind one should have as a scientist or researcher. My only criticism was the delving into the personal histories of the contributing scholars and scientists in each topical chapter (much I already knew from reading other scientific concepts books), but I understand why the author included them.All in all, a most enjoyable read.
Over the years I have followed the evolution of cosmology from Fred Hoyle's "continuous creation" theory until the present. As observation ability and very smart modern thinkers has dramatically to allowed new theories to develop and old ones to fade to quaint ideas, there seems to no upper limit to completely understanding how our universe started and when and if it will end - and what all it consists of. Stuart Clark offers a refreshing summary of what we think we know now and the long history of our learning to parent day concepts. Some of the material in this book requires a bit more reading to wrap your mind around such concepts as parallel universes but for the most part, current (and past) theories are well explained for even the casual reader without a foundation in physics and cosmology.A sprinkle of humor here and there adds to the enjoyment as you journey through a fascinating history of early far thinking people that, based on then-available knowledge and observations, came up with reasonably sound ideas of our physical universe. Modern science continues to mold our knowledge as more discoveries are made and more mysteries (e.g., dark matter and dark matter) portend further excitement ahead. Stuart Clark has written a fine piece to explain where we have been and where to aim next. Great reading. I hope to see future offerings by Mr. Clark.

This is a great calendar! The easel style is hard to find, but I am very happy with the quality and design of this one. The months take up the whole side (no extra pictures), making it roomy for writing things on the calendar and easy to read. The other side has really nice flower pictures for those walking by the desk to see. I have had no problems with the calendar staying up and am glad I purchased this item.
This calendar is fantastic. The images are very pretty and you get the option of a smaller calendar with just the dates on one side or a larger grid on the other so you can write notes in. Stands well and is a great quality product.

This is very nice and not too large to be annoying.
I have to have a calendar by my desk which just happens to be in our bedroom, and my husband hates the look of a big wall calendar. I needed to find something that I could write on (eg. Appointments, birthdays, bill due dates) but that could sit on top of my desk as well. This was perfect. I checked out plenty of websites and was unable to find a desk calendar with room to write in. To be honest, I picked this for the functionality more than the prints. But if you want to just view the calendar days, you don't see the drawn flowers on the opposite side. Will buy for 2017 too.

The book is principally slanted for the male dancer. As a woman who has been taking Argentine Tango lessons about 7 months, the book was not as helpful. I did find a listing of suitable but offbeat music very helpful and there was always something to learn in the general explanations. I gave it a three star rating because for me the organization of the book doesn't lend itself to the promise of the title.
This is an easy to follow, well written, and concise, description of the techniques used in Argentine Tango. The only thing better than this book is to take classes with an instructor. It also serves as a refresher of the principles used in class.
written in a non nonsense style - the author is a biology PhD - very clear and detailed - this book packs useful and insightful tips for the beginner tanguero.

The Fodor's guide to Caribbean cruise ports of call is absolutely packed with information to help you plan your ultimate vacation in the Carribean. Most people who take a vacation in the Caribbean do so with cruise lines rather than fly and this guide takes you step by step through all the options that are available (well most) starting with how to choose your cruise liner, what options are available, layouts of a typical ship so that you can better choose your cabin etc. then onto the cruise lines themselves detailing all the different cruise lines that ship to the Caribbean.Part of choosing a cruise line is where you will depart. If you live in New Jersey chances are that you won't want to have to travel down to Miami just to board a ship so the book details which departure points are available and which cruise lines depart from there. Also dependent on your departure point is the destination of the cruise you will take. Fodor's guide has you covered as well as maps, places to stay, things to do, where to eat etc. for each of the departure cities in case you have to stay overnight or just wish to stay longer before you board your ship. At this point you can tell that the guide isn't quite up to date as one of the departure points for the Caribbean starting this 2017 season is Mobile, Alabama which isn't listed in the guide.The first third of the book is geared towards those that have never sailed on a cruise line before. If you have taken a cruise before then, unless you are departing from a different point, you can fairly much skip over the first few chapters.The rest of the book is a guide to each port of call that all the cruise liners stop at. For each port of call there is a map highlighting the main places you may want to go visit for example with Nassau it details where Parliament Square is, the Queen's staircase, Paradise beach etc. Along with pointing out each of the main tourist attractions on the map there is a short description of each. Next the guide gives you a couple of places to eat, which beaches are nearby, an overview of the shopping and activities such as golf that are nearby each port of call and finally some tips for example which currency is in use at that port, tips on taxis and rough costs etc.This is not a detailed guide to each island but focuses mainly on a port of call and what you could reasonably be expected to do in a day whilst ashore. It doesn't list all the main attractions, places to eat or things to do but gives you a couple of the highlights from each port of call. There are no pictures to accompany each of port of call either.This Fodor's guide covers all of the Caribbean, not just for example the Bahamas or Haiti and as such, although there is a lot of information in this guide, the information regarding each place is fairly sparse and you would end up having to either buy a more detailed of the ports that you visit or look up google which won't give you the insiders view, which is supposed to be one of the attractions of guides like these.As such I would say get a guide more suited to the cruise that will embark on, for example a guide to Nassau and the Bahamas rather than a guide that covers absolutely everything.
I'm going to be cruising to the Caribbean for the third time in a few months. I wish I had had this book on my first cruise there! I love that all the ports of call are covered, and I love, love, love that the book discusses things such as how far from the cruise port you will find sites of interest, shops, restaurants, etc. The information on the best places to see and whether or not it's worth hiring a taxi is also invaluable.If you are planning any kind of Caribbean cruise this is the book to get!
Was great for our recent cruise. We were even able to get three teenage girls who were without Wi-Fi to use it and they loved all the useful information and commented how great it was to not have to go online to look anything up. How did we ever survive without the internet! Lol
This is a useful book to have if you're coming off a cruise ship. While many tour books focus on hotels & restaurants, this one provides basic descriptions of things to do in different ports, from cultural sites to beaches to day trips. It is a useful port-by-port primer as help you figure out how you want to spend your days ashore. I purchased it specifically because it was the 2017 edition so I knew it was relatively up to date.
Good basic over view of all the cruise lines and all the ports of departure as well as destinations. Not very detailed because there just is not room. But the highly recommended sites are all well worth visiting.
I felt that the book did not give anymore information than the cruise lines gives. I wanted information about things to do other than ship activities off boat. This did not give behind the scenes info. It did give General information about the ports.
I love this super-concise guide to the Caribbean ports of call. It not only includes destination ports, it also includes ports of embarkation such as Miami, Fort Lauderdale etc. This guide is perfect for exploring a port on your own or taking a planned excursion. I recommend this guide!
Useful reference book for first time Caribbean cruisers. Not 100% up to date but no book can be. At least you will have an idea what to visit on each island.
The book was very helpful in preparing for our cruise and offered a lot of insight to the places we visited. Appreciated the recommendations off the beaten path.

This novel was required reading in my high school back in the 1960's. I'm glad, because it was, and still is, one of my very favorite books of all time and I am a well read person (Note: my license plate reads B1G READ). Back in high school, I wanted to name my son, if I had one, Ethan. (I had three, but, unfortunately, they were all named names starting with "M". I regret that!) "Ethan Frome" is a great advisory tale of what might happen when you do not listen to your heart and follow it.
Perhaps like many readers, my first introduction to Edith Wharton was through this work in a school setting. At the time, I was instantly struck by how good it was, especially considering its diminutive size. In fact, I decided to try another helping, The House of Mirth, which I enjoyed as well, although without the same intensity. For various reasons, years after my first encounter with Wharton, I decided to give Ethan Frome a second read. I am not sorry in the slightest for having done so, for this work is marvelous.Ethan Frome is considered by many critics to be Wharton's finest work, although the rural setting and length is atypical of her output. She wrote the work in a determined effort to take a setting she felt was overly sentimentalized by her fellow female authors and strip the location of cozy `samplerism'. In this she has succeeded, for the landscape Wharton paints is uncomfortably stark. In the town of Starkfield, a young farmer, Ethan, shackled to a neurotic parasite of a wife, Zenobia, must choose between remaining faithful to his wife or succumbing to the agreeable attentions of the new servant, a distant relative of his wife's. As a conservative and religious man, I am usually unsympathetic to literary arguments against middle-class marital propriety, but Wharton has created such a monstrous witch in the character of Zenobia, and made the charming Mattie so thoroughly sweet, if not particularly skilled, that one can hardly blame Ethan for wavering, although acknowledging that his contemplation of abandoning Zeena and escaping West with Mattie is self-centered. The central plot is cushioned by a frame story set many years after a terrible accident Ethan suffers near the end of the work, in which an educated engineer, trapped by rough weather, stays with an aged, embittered Ethan at his decrepit farmstead. The exact details of this accident and its horrific aftermath are only revealed in the latter bookend of the frame story that closes this riveting tale of jealousy, illness, inertia, and constraint. The portraiture of the landscape and the psychology of three of its inhabitants is exquisitely rendered; Wharton knows her stuff.Wordsworth Classics never fails to produce editions of the highest possible quality, and at vastly affordable prices. This edition, with a fairly strong introduction by Pamela Knights, a professor at the institution where I took my master's degree, reproduces the `asterisk clouds' and chapter separations found in the original release and often deleted in modern reprintings of the novella. The cover art is excellently suited to the contents, the back cover material is well written and accurate, and the scholarly notes at the end are helpful without becoming pedantic. Hats off to one of my favorite publishers for another job well done!I recommend this book to those who enjoy pastoral and anti-pastoral, as there are arguments for this book belonging to both camps. Wharton fans, American literature buffs, appreciators of realism, and readers with shorter attention spans would also be encouraged to pick up Ethan Frome and hole up alongside of Ethan, Zeena, and Mattie in their claustrophobic farmhouse.
This is a wonderfully depressing story about a romantic love that couldn't be. While I found it somewhat laborious, I am glad I read it and at just under 100 pages, it did not take too long to read it. The story is cleverly written, although those seeking a breezy read will be somewhat disappointed. That said, anyone who has suffered in romance will find this alluring.
This is the 2nd time I licensed / read Ethan Frome, it was required reading for me in HSPA. And I did not understand the purpose. I think I understand better now. Or stalwart on this reading I'm getting a certain interpretation.I think the blue-blooded , hypochondriac dominatrix Zeena has meuncher's syndrome. She is put our and threatened by her pauper cousin Mattie, and this hatred is in conjunction with being married to Ethan, both keeping her from her preferred elitist lifestyle. Unsure if Zeena knew, or suspected Ethan and Mattie's adultery. If she did not , she achieved the same goal of punishing both of them by sending Mattie away.Yet, though its a tragedy that both Ethan and Mattie lived, it is also a fitting revenge best served cold on Zeena. It's also tragic how sweet lovable and admirable Mattie, switched personalities with Zeena.
I did not like this book in high school. I can now safely say I don't like it as an adult either. Ethan Frome is a cautionary tale - there are too many warnings here to count depending on your perspective. But it's a story told at you, not one you live alongside the characters. I didn't find myself siding with anyone, because they were not likable people. Everyone is miserable. It is not enjoyable at all, this story about struggle, love, loss, and survival.
This review reflects the accuracy of the listing and not the story itself. The listing picture shows a beautifully bound, blue linen text with gold embossed title and small emblem on the cover. What I received however was nothing I would want to display in a home collection. It was an ENORMOUS old library book, in poor condition, with extremely large print unsuitable for carrying in one's purse or briefcase to read anywhere other than home. It was closer to the size of a briefcase itself, in fact. Be aware that you very well may not get the collectors item you think you are paying for. That said, if you have rather poor eyesight and are in need of extremely large type, this would be a very suitable book.
