From Booklist
The author endeavors to help seniors understand their rights involving medical care, bank accounts, retirement accounts, housing, and discrimination. She explains health insurance options and how to choose health-care providers. Also discussed are financial matters, such as applying for and receiving benefits and pensions as well as bank accounts and investments. A chapter examines options on where seniors can live: nursing homes, assisted living arrangements, continuing care communities, in-home care, staying with a family member, or hospice care for seniors with a life-ending illness. Sember, a lawyer, offers advice on ways to deal with and protect yourself from nursing-home problems, elder abuse, scams, home dangers, predatory mortgage lenders, credit card theft, and dishonest telemarketers. The first step to protecting your rights, as she indicates, is understanding them, and this book will help seniors achieve that goal. George CohenCopyright © American Library Association. I am the Editor In Chief of the Retirement Intelligence Information Services newsletter available at retirementcalc.com. This book is a great resource for those who are entering their senior years or those of you with parents who are seniors. Brette McWhorter Sember, the book's author, is a retired Attorney. The book is well-written in easy to understand terms. All legal and technical terms are clearly explained. It is obvious that Ms. Sember is passionate about helping senior's put the information in her book to use: practical and useful information are the foundation of this book. The chapters are as follows:Chapter 1: FinancesChapter 2: Health InsuranceChapter 3: Health CareChapter 4: LifestyleChapter 5: HousingChapter 6: SafetyChapter 7: Family IssuesI found this chapter especially useful. The topics covered are rarely covered in other books about the retirement years. These topics include: grandparents' visitation rights, raising grandchildren, divorce, remarriage, cohabitation, and stepfamily issues.Chapter 8: Planning for the FutureChapter 9: Loss of a SpouseChapter 10: Discrimination and DisabilitiesChapter 11: Veterans' RightsChapter 12: Legal AssistanceAppendix A: Organizations Includes resources from AARP to Visiting Nurses Association of America.Appendix B: Websites Gives web resources on topics from driving to nursing homes.Appendix C: Senior Legal Hotline Directory Provides the hotline contact information for each of the 50 states.Appendix D: State-Specific ResourcesResources from Agency on Aging to Elder Abuse Hotline Numbers are given and broken-down by state.Appendix E: Nursing Home Residents' Rights in the U.S. A quick 8-page guide to rights for nursing home residents.Appendix F: Nursing Home Checklist A ten-page checklist to help you evaluate nursing homes.Appendix G: FormsIncludes: medical authorization, permission to release medical information and basic information organization sheet forms. In addition to the resources provided in the appendixes, "Senior Tip" boxes are sprinkled throughout the book. The under $15 price tag can easily be recouped by implementing just one of the tips in this book. But, more importantly, the peace of mind that comes with knowing you have taken the steps to protect your future no matter what life has in store for you - that is priceless.
This book is a must-read for seniors, or those caring for seniors, as it offers comprehensive information on retaining control. Control of finances, health care choices, housing options, personal and home safety, and family issues such as life after the death of a spouse and visitation rights with grandchildren when divorce enters the picture. What I like best about the book are the "senior tips" sprinkled throughout the chapters. Also helpful are the seven appendix sections that highlight forms, state-specific resources, and organizations all working to help seniors live life to the fullest. While I plan to give copies of this book to my parents and in-laws, a copy will remain on my bookshelf. It gives me peace of mind to know I can step in as a knowledgeable advocate for them, if needed.

I like reading this book. The authors did a pretty decent job taking a hard subject and writing about in a way I could understand, and organizing the sections in a way that builds your knowledge. My professor gave us a number of hard programming assignments in C that followed the book as well and reinforced that knowledge. So if you use this book within the right system, it can be very good. I don't think it would be easy for a beginner to just read however. You really need to dive into some of the things that you read about and get your hands dirty to gain the full value from this book. My graduate class was able to cover 6 chapters completely plus a spattering from a few other chapters in one semester. It was a very worthwhile class.
Very succinct book for early learners like myself (neophytes as my teacher calls us). There is the full linux kernel development book in its fifth edition, but that can be dense and frustrating for beginners. This Operating System Concepts Essentials has a great accompanying website with lots of great code examples and various resources that are very helpful.
Had to get this book for a class. The most confusing book I have every read, typos and you will need to read over the chapters twice to get what it being said. Best to use the Powerpoint on the linked site to get the summary of each chapter or just go to the summary within the chapter. I know they author's tried well to break down the subject but it seemed at times that it was too much filler and not just enough for what need to be explained.
Loving this book. Had to purchase for my Operating Systems Theory class. When I saw that the regular edition cost over 100 bucks I was ready to grit my teeth and just buy it. Then I heard about the Indian edition which was insanely cheaper so I bought it without a second thought. Shipping was fast and the book is high quality. Some people complain the pages are too thin and you can’t concentrate because the text bleeds through; while the paper is thinner, I am not distracted by the very light bleed that comes through. Maybe if you hold a single page up to the light and try to read them you’ll get distracted...As for content, this book is great. After finishing a particularly long chapter, I found myself continuing to read simply because I was feeling more curious about what the author would talk about next. This edition is great!
This is a very well written book on operating system design, multiprogramming, threads and all the great things that go on inside your computer while it runs an operating system. It requires some prerequisite knowledge of computer hardware and some programming. As other reviewers have stated, it is not a freshman level book. It is however, an excellent guide for people studying software design. It seems to be lacking in some areas, the section on semaphores was probably the worst area of the book. I had to turn to Tanenbaum's works for better information. Overall though, worthy of four stars.Unfortunately, I have to add to my review that I am deeply disappointed in the direction the publisher has taken with respect to the text. I find it distasteful that publishers have gone from printing student solutions manuals to requiring access to a web site. Fortunately, the editions have not changed that much and the questions are still available in solutions manuals of prior editions or perhaps if you are lucky, someone has a PDF of them. Likewise, leading search engines can provide sources for researching the solution to see if your answer is correct.
This book was the required reading for one of my college programming courses. The authors go in to good details about the specifics of all subjects relating to operating systems in general. Some that were notable were the use and creation of semaphore objects, threading, CPU scheduling, and disk scheduling algorithms. The semaphores and threading were particularly useful in completing the classic synchronization problem 'The Dining Philosophers' which was one of the assignments for the course. The breakdown of disk organization was another very beneficial and highly interesting topic. The book covers MAC OS, Linux, Unix, Windows, as well as some information about older systems such as DOS and CP/M. The book has generalized examples and each topic includes a good deal of theory. I do not recommend this book for people without a solid foundation of C or C++. It helps to know Assembly as well, but not necessary.
This book has been around for many editions. I really enjoyed reading it. The author has good explanations with plenty of examples.
Excellent new book! The price is much cheaper, compared to the hardcover version, but the content is the same.

#39,000 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)
After inheriting a New Orleans plantation along with his two younger brothers, Aidan Flynn, a private investigator and widower, delves into the dark and dangerous history of their new home along with a beautiful tarot card reader, Kendall Montgomery, when he stumbles upon a couple of human bones on the property...DEADLY NIGHT was a thrilling and fast paced read that I very much enjoyed. Aidan and Kendall were both well fleshed out and lovable characters with lots of chemistry and an explosive attraction. The story was well balanced with just the right amount of romance, suspense, and mystery that never failed to keep me engaged and wanting to read on. It was completely unpredictable with plenty of twists and turns along the way, and a villain that was hard to pin down just because there were so many suspects to choose from. Although not quite as chilling and creepy as some of Ms. Graham's other paranormal romantic suspense novels I've read, it was still unnerving to say the least. And while I would have liked more insight into the killer's mindset and more background on the ghostly Civil War era Flynns, overall it was a solid and satisfying read. I also loved the epilogue and thought it was a fitting end to Aidan and Kendall's love story. I'm already looking forward to Jeremy's book next (the middle brother) and can hardly wait!
I'm a huge fan of Heather Graham, but this book is a mess. Scenes run together. Head-hopping at its worst. Confusing and irritating to read. Heather should fire her editor and look for another publisher. Pitiful
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The author did a great job of developing the characters and making you feel the "ghosts" of the past. The whodunit kept you guessing till the end. I would have given it 5 stars except for the editing. The story switched from one character and scene without any separation. It was so confusing at times and would take a minute or two to orient yourself to where you were in the story.
I chose a rating of 4 instead of my usual 5 because of the editing. Grammar is fine as is punctuation. The problem is in words running together. I would read this book again and am going to read the rest of the series.
The characters were well formed. Even the ghostly ones. I didn't like however how sentences would run together with different characters at different locations..
This was amazing how good can overcome evil.with help of the ghosts love in the world always there to help
Have read many of Graham's books and have found them all very informative if somewhat formulaic. Graham has a great knowledge of the areas about which she writes and incorporates myths and stories of the area into her own tale of the paranormal. Her characters are believable built with their own backgrounds and conflicts. The solutions to her mysteries are not easily guessed or pried from the text which makes reading her books entertaining. You have to be a fan of "a true ghost tale" and not a slasher tale to truly appreciate this good read involving the Flynn brothers.
Deadly Harvest, Deadly Night and Deadly Gift - I could not stop reading. I even was compelled to tell my sister about them...stating while I wanted to quit reading because of the intensity of the story line...I just couldn't quit. I visit my father each day and even cut short my visit so I could read...I will probably go to hell for being a bad daughter, but I JUST COULD NOT leave the story unfinished!

The Six-foot Bonsai is a remarkable story, well told by the only person who can tell it. Author Stacy Gleiss has opened her life and her heart to tell the hardest of truths. As a child in the 50’s and 60’s, like many other children, I would fantasize about living in a foreign land. Could I really fly on a magic Arabian carpet or live in a tree like Mowgli or better still Jane? When I grew older the mystery of these lands rather lessened as I was exposed to magazines like Holiday and National Geographic. Documentaries on television and travelogues held at the local library or our church, by those few lucky individuals who traveled to faraway places on missionary trips or for work in the ever more global economy, brought tales of these lands home. One of the countries which remain mysterious and romanticized is Japan. With its visions of cherry blossoms, Shirley MacLaine, as a poised yet coquettish kimono-clad hostess, in the 1961 movie My Geisha and the horticultural wonder of the miniature Bonsai tree, pruned to perfection¬; Japan still intrigues me. And what of the longtime and growing fascination with one of its most successful exports: anime?Popular broadcaster Paul Harvey made famous the phrase “the rest of the story†and for those like me, who subscribe to the credo that truth is indeed stranger than fiction, this book is for you. The rest of the story, revealed in the pages of The Six-Foot Bonsais, is the story of one lonely young girl from rural Michigan, whose family participated in a Japanese exchange student program, and whose enthrallment with Japan led her to an intimate experience of the underbelly of this ancient culture.Mesmerizing in a way only the truth can be, Stacy Gleiss, through her autobiography leads the reader to understand a darker side of Japan: from her dreamlike life on the island of Sado as the bride of a Japanese student, through her struggles to deprogram herself from all her dreams of becoming Japanese, back to the stunning reality of the nightmare from which the author still must untangle herself and help her children to do the same.Though the final chapters of this book are still, and probably in some ways will always be, lived out by its author, Stacy Gleiss shares, with uncommon openness, her life and her continued concerns for the effect Japan’s ancient practices, now disguised as innocent fantasy, have both in Japan and throughout the world, in the form of some anime.Through it all. she finds in her own backyard a faith that surprises and sustains her. This is an extremely personal story told by one who left her life only to find it again. Well-written in her own matter-of-fact style, Stacy’s experience has a larger message for her readers to contemplate. That of the long-lasting effect culture, and sub-cultures; whether those encountered in other lands, our own country or within families; have on us all.
The author embarked on her journey as a teenager who traveled to Japan in the late 1970's and immediately fell in love with its inimitable culture as well as some of the people living in it. Her unfortunate encounter with a smooth-taking pedophile led to years of emotional and physical abuse at the hands of a boorish bully who acted like may spoiled elder sons I have heard about. The difference here, I'd point out, was the extensive evidence he barely hid of his pedophilia tendencies and in her conflagration of the Japanese culture and her ex-husband's sickness, culminating in years of abuse she was unable to protect her daughter from, for which she suffered immeasurable guilt. At the end of the story, her spiritual discovery seemed to set her free. I'm glad for her, but as an atheist it's a bit difficult for me to digest. I share her grown children's skepticism about their recalcitrant father and his ability to "Right" a lifetime of wrongs. I'd caution against thinking that a love for Japanese or any other culture is an addiction, but in her case it seemed to have manifested as an escape valve in much the way that drugs or alcohol might. When she writes on Japan's under-discussed "Lolikon" issue, in which young girls are fetishized by men of all ages, she presents a cogent argument begging for more attention from academia. I've lived nearly half my life in rural Japan and much of what she describes is familiar, from the music to the food, from the fashion to the fetishes. I hope she can unite with her daughter and share this story in Japanese, as I believe the message is vitally important. Please let the daughters of Japan know that their bodies are only their own!
Even at age 20 I share a strong relationship with the key problems of Japanese culture and what it can bring out in sexual ways, which is expressed in it's fullest in this book.Stacy Gleiss is a strong person all throughout her life, even through the experiences that would make most people want to commit suicide, and she writes about each event in this book in each event's detail. This is an incredibly compelling read, and teaches a lesson about the dangers of cultural addiction. This is the only book I've found that expresses the problem with sexual exploitation and abuse of under aged girls in Japan, because it is still a surprisingly huge problem. Now that Japanese media is coming more and more into the United States, I think it's important just to look at everything with a cautionary eye.If you ever plan on living to Japan, this is a MUST READ before you do!
SPOILERS BELOW:It’s hard to review a memoire, as the story was someone’s actual life, but here goes.Gleiss was a lonely, bullied, “disfigured†child whose desperate need for acceptance and attention led her down a rabbit hole of bad decisions that destroyed more than just her own life.Reading this book was like watching a train wreck begin in slow motion and then play in double time. I expected her first encounter with her evil ex-husband to be that of a moon-eyed teenager swooning over and exotic older man, but was disturbed to see she saw the warning signs IMMEDIATELY and still pursued this man who would one day rape her daughter. From bad decision to bad decision, Gleiss dug herself in so deep that her spiral out of control was easy to see coming and she must have been out of her mind to continue as she did for so long.Though it seems to end in the author finding peace, as someone who lost faith early in life, I find it hard to believe her “finding Christ†is anything more than another obsession to replace Japan. As for Gleiss’s ex-husband, as a casual fan of Japan and anime, this book is a good warning of how detrimental the lolikon culture can be to its consumers and those around them.

This is the second edition of a book that I originally found in medical school, which I've read through a couple times and found very useful. The revised edition is significantly expanded compared the original, with almost a complete rewrite of the content. There are 365 unique, short chapters focusing on "common errors" in the management of emergent conditions -- I liked this book a lot because of the focus on high risk diagnoses or chief complaints in the error-prone, high decision density environment of the ED. While many of the topics are things that will be familiar to most clinicians, it never hurts to be reminded of an approach to troubleshooting post-intubation hypotension, or of the risk for abdominal compartment syndrome (though not typically an ED diagnosis) alongside instructions for how to measure abdominal compartment pressure. There are sections on things like cardiology, e.g. "Know the Mimics of Ventricular Tachycardia" and also critical care, with a great chapter on "How to Care for the ICU Boarder in Your ED" by none other than Josh Farkas who writes the PulmCrit blog I like so much. There are sections on upcommon presentations and pitfalls therein, such as "Normal Diagnostic Studies Do Not Rule Out Shunt Malfunction" and more medico-legal focused (clinical medicine is the overarching focus of the book, but I found this helpful) and clinical practice ares such as crowding, consultant communication / documentation and how to handle a deposition request. All in all, very readable, brief chapters that you could very easily read one of every day and learn something new, and well-written by authors respected in their fields. A bargain, and comes with an eBook that you can use as a reference on shift.
omg This is a superb book. I got tired of books that discuss conditions in broad superficial ways like most Medicine books. This is a very portable book teeming with precious up to date advice that covers more Medicine than any other. Hundreds of top notch contributors !Pleasant to read . A gem ! I would have bought it even if it cost ten times more!Pierre
Very informative. It is supposed to be a daily read as opposed to a cram type of read. Written by the SMEs of EM. Full of pearls. I recommend this book to those who have been in EM for at least 1 year. Otherwise, the information may be irrelevant or difficult to follow.
I appreciate the format of this book, with each chapter titled with the emergency medicine problem that has been the frequent cause of bad outcomes. Dense book, tons of info, yet to the point. I'm a FNP working in urgent care. In this setting there exists a temptation to clear pts without the appropriate work up. I am a huge fan of emergency bounce backs, and like that book, this one assists me in maintaining a high index of suspicion for the big baddies.
Great tidbits of information and each section is maybe 2-3 pages long. The sections do not overload you with information, they just tell you the facts. This book is great for new physicians/PAs/NPs working in the emergency department!
Each topic is covered in 2-4 pages to it's not an overwhelming tome. A good read with useful info if you work in ER or related area.
Great book. Concise and easily digestible chapters. Easy to read a few after a shift, then hit the hay.
The product showed up beaten up and wrinkled in multiple places. Very disappointed. I paid full price for this book and it was supposed to be a gift, but the cover was wrinkled and folded in multiple places, so I couldn't give it as a gift.

From School Library Journal
In popular culture, Rosie the Riveter symbolized the thousands of women who worked assembly line jobs during World War II; her image lives on as an iconic poster for women's rights. Shetterly tells a companion story: starting in 1945, about 50 college-educated African American female mathematicians were among the approximately 1,000 women quietly hired by Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory as entry-level "computers"— their job title before the actual machine was invented. The author focuses on four black women who worked alongside engineers—that more prestigious title went to white men—to run tests, produce calculations, and tweak theories, pushing America into the modern aviation age. Their work ethic, smarts, and loyalty also gave them something else: earning power. Proudly securing a place in the middle class for their families, they could afford their own homes and college educations for their children. In exchange, they agreed to fit in—enduring, for example, the daily humiliation of the company's segregated cafeteria. Even the few who simply ate at their desks agreed, implicitly, to keep politics out of the workplace. As an insider, Shetterly, whose father was an African American career scientist at Langley, pieces this history together lovingly and carefully, with more than 250 footnotes. Now a mainstream movie, this is an inspiring account that is not so much hidden as it is untold. VERDICT Spotlighting pioneering black women who made their mark as mathematicians during segregation, this is a must for history collections.—Georgia Christgau, Middle College High School, Long Island City, NY

Review
“Meticulous… the depth and detail that are the book’s strength make it an effective, fact-based rudder with which would-be scientists and their allies can stabilize their flights of fancy. This hardworking, earnest book is the perfect foil for the glamour still to come.” (Seattle Times)“Much as Tom Wolfe did in “The Right Stuff”, Shetterly moves gracefully between the women’s lives and the broader sweep of history . . . Shetterly, who grew up in Hampton, blends impressive research with an enormous amount of heart in telling these stories (Boston Globe)“Restoring the truth about individuals who were at once black, women and astounding mathematicians, in a world that was constructed to stymie them at every step, is no easy task. Shetterly does it with the depth and detail of a skilled historian and the narrative aplomb of a masterful storyteller.” (Bookreporter.com)

The audible version of Hidden Figures (showing the images of celebrities Taraji P. Henson,Janelle Monae, Octavia Spencer) caught my attention after I saw it featured online on a website that I was on. I decided to take a chance on it to broaden my mind. I am glad to have taken a chance on the audio despite the not so cheap price. One reason; the narrator shares one of the stories where one of the women admitted to have grown up in Hampton Virginia around successful role models who worked an accomplished living in field of education andor the federal government (NASA, National Advisory for Air Committee, mention of the Langley base in Virginia andor the sciences etc.) . This positively shaped her worldview on what was possible. Many of the women who applied at Langley were mentioned to come from accomplished employment backgrounds in education as well as having mathematical talents. There was mentioned that Langley employed multiple women in the field of computers. One of the women, Dorothy Vaughan is mentioned to have worked as a math teacher in Farmville, Virginia. Dorothy Vaughan’s in- laws were considered part of the financial upper-class in the area and mentioned to own a barbershop, a pool hall, and a service station. Their (Vaughan’s in-laws) activities made headlines at times through such media as what was mentioned in the audible version the Norfolk Journal and Guide. However, Vaughan was mentioned to be a modest person and aimed to carefully balance her family life with her career life. Vaughan’s academic accomplishments resulted in her becoming a valedictorian of her high school and attaining a full ride scholarship to Wilberforce University. The audio discussed that Vaughan performed so well to the point that one of the professors recommended her for a graduate program in Howard University. However, economic conditions after her graduation at Wilberforce University influenced Vaughan to hang up her graduate school dreams and pursue a career in teaching instead. She worked as a waitress at a hotel in Richmond Virginia until 1931 when she eventually moved on to her teaching job in Farmville Virginia. The audio shared that around this time Vaughan attracted the romantic attention of one of the area’s most eligible bachelors in Farmville Virginia. Of course, there are much more informative details in this audio. The Hidden Figures audible version by Margot Lee Shetterly, Robin Miles, and Harper Audio is a worthwhile purchase for people of various backgrounds (racial, socio-economic etc.) because of the theme of achieving success despite coming from a challenging environment/background as well as the abundance of historical information. I admit that I do not discuss my own full/paternal background not out of shame but more out of only knowing/being certain of my late biological mother and some of her background as well as showing some respect for both my adoptive father who is still alive and my late adoptive mother.
My comments are somewhat bias since Katherine Johnson is my aunt. I have seen the movie twice and read the book. My preference is the book mostly because of the additional information provided about Aunt Katherine. Many movie goers who only see the movie will miss out on a number of opportunities to see more realistically Aunt Katherine's nature, attitudes, and life's perspectives on work, family, and race. The movie is done very well and I commend all those involved in its production including the talented stars. It is a case of getting one slice of pie when you could get two slices. I suggest you eat WELL! ATBroady
I saw the movie before I read the book, and I am honestly not sure whether that was a good or bad thing. I loved the movie, and I loved the book, but they are very different.Generally, the book is a very fast-paced and interesting read about the black women who worked at the Langley Air Force Base in Hampton, Virginia, and their many and varied contributions to the field of aeronautical and astronautical research. It is part biography, part history of NASA, part history of segregation, part history of the civil rights movement, part history of the Virginia peninsula, and part history of women's rights. It is absolutely fascinating. That being said, the book is very different from the movie, so don't go into it expecting them to be the same. The movie is deeply touching, but it is actually fairly inaccurate, and it has been pretty aggressively whitewashed (see re: the Kevin Costner character). I think it is good to both see the movie and read the book, because one of the critical differences, and the difference that I think is missed entirely by the movie (to its great detriment) is the way in which issues of segregation were actually tackled at Langley. The movie makes it appear that enlightened white men of power were responsible for Langley's integration, when in fact the integration of Langley was almost entirely borne organically and of necessity. The book does a good job of explaining this, whereas that aspect of the movie is almost entirely fictionalized. I thought the movie took away some of the women's victories in this area (Katherine Johnson, for example, never went to the "colored" bathroom. She just used the regular, unlabeled bathroom, and no one ever told her not to), but the book gives the women more credit for their small yet trailblazing acts of defiance. One other note: the book actually covers quite a bit of complex scientific detail, but it is entirely readable to the layperson.I highly, highly recommend this book.
