I am about a third of the way through this book, and can't put it down. I am a Talmud nerd. While hardly an expert, I love the teachings of the Talmud - they have influenced both my life and writing.What would it be like to go from being an illiterate shepherd to being the greatest sage in history? In The Orchard, Yochi Brandes brings one of my personal heros, Rabbi Akiva, to life. Brandes makes this transformation a compelling story, written from the perspective of Rachel, Akivas second wife who goes from being a rich merchant's daughter to Agavah, a chained woman, abandoned by her husband and unable to remarry or get on with her life.I particularly like the rivalry between the school of Hillel, which focuses on an interpretive approach to the Torah as a means of renewal, and the house of Shammai, which interprets the Torah literally. This conflict still exists within the Jewish community today.More than anything, I treasure the way that Brandes makes the sages real characters. Rabbi Joshua is a person, with loves and hurts and ambition. Like the other characters and sages in the book, his life and decisions are shaped by his internalization of Torah. Different people internalize the lessons differently, which directly leads to how they who up in life.Whether you practice Mussar like I do to internalize Torah, are interested in the early roots of Rabbinic Judaism and Christianity, or just want a compelling read, I highly recommend this book. I can't put it down.
I thought The Secret Book of Kings couldn't be topped. I was wrong. Yochi Brandes has written a book as brilliant as, and in some ways superior to her previous novel. I'm not really qualified to comment on Dan Liebenson's translation, but it flows as easily as his translation of her previous novel. As someone who loves to read and also dabbles with writing what can best be described as biblical fiction (or in this case, perhaps fiction of the Tannaim) I am drawn deeply into the story, and will forever view this book and its predecessor as standards to which one should aspire when writing fiction of this nature. Now, for purposes of full disclosure, I'm a Jewish educator and theologian, of liberal bent, who is familiar with the characters and the subject matter and that most certainly enhances my enjoyment and appreciation for the book. I can't speak to how someone of a more traditional Jewish bent might respond to this book, though I suspect there is something there for those who embrace the rabbinic tradition, and those who are less eager to embrace it in our modern times. The portraits of rabbis whose names we know well are compelling and appropriately earthy. Reading both this book and The Secret Book of Kings has forever influenced my thoughts about the stories and characters they contain.
Yochi Brandes has managed to capture the essence of an important historical period for both the Jewish people and for Christians alike. The rabbinic characters, the story of the great Rabbi Akiva, come to life in this very well written historical novel. I have read this book in the original Hebrew and the translation is very good.
I was told about this book years ago but was finally happy to see it in a language I enjoy reading. The translation was really well done. I was surprised that I liked it so much. Who would think a bunch of rabbis thousands of years ago would be so interesting. This is one of the most crucial periods in Jewish history. This period was the end of Israelite cult practices and the birth of Judaism as we know it today. It was this small period of time that the Jews gained a practicing religion but lost their homeland. This book is not at all just for Jews. It dives deeply into the bare beginning of the Jesus movement and clarifies the first perception of Christianity to the Jews of Judea. It also shows how G-d's commandments and the written text because accessible to all.The pace of the book is very good (in other words, the way I like it) and she highlights clearly the most important parts of the history at that time. What we know today she was sure to keep to the facts but what we do not know, Brandes was very generous with the fiction. It would help to understand a little about the period or in parallel look online (Wikipedia) to read if certain subjects are not clear or what is based on fact or what was made into creative fiction.
This book - told from the perspective of Rabbi Alina’s wife— covers the period from about 85 ce to 135 ce. The author weaves together midrash, Josephus , the Haggadah, and Jewish secular scholarship to bring together the multiple themes and complex personalities of the period that provides insight into the formulation of rabbinic Judaism. The significance of the struggle between the House of Shammai and the House of Hillel is explored and explained more effectively than any academic explanation I’ve ever encountered.She also provides an explanation for why Akiba is not condemned by the sages after the failed Bar Kochba Revolt.Well written and engaging. My must read suggestion for 2018

I loved the way the author was able to weave history and religion together for an unforgettable story! Also, she gave a very different view of Rachel than i have seen before! The mystical aspect of the rabbi's sojourn into the "orchard" was thrilling! I would recommend this book, along with Steinberg's "As a driven leaf" to anyone interested in this period of Jewish history!!
The book covers a period in history that always interested me, and did it in an extraordinary manner, bringing the past very much alive. I thought it was a wonderful piece of work. I feel like it gave me a much better sense of the immediate post Temple period.

I used this book as a textbook for a intro-level GIS course offered at an R1 university. While it contains some of the basic ideas, most of it is very tedious, unhelpful, and repetitive, e.g. many sentences and paragraphs in many chapters describe how impressed the authors are with the technological advances offered by cell phones. A lot of unreflective philosophy of science jargon takes center stage instead of interesting conceptual discussions. This appears to be a poor 'how-to' book as well as a poor 'big ideas' book. Moreover, it is expensive. I would not recommend this as a textbook or a reference book.
Still reading it (only on chaper 8) but already it has been a slog to get through. way to wordy and overly complext about concepts so much so that it can make fairly simple ideas hard to understand. Also I keep wishing things like chapter 6 where at the beginning and that thay had cut out a good chunk of chapter 1. Finally am I the only one who is seeing grammar mistakes and other mistakes in the actual writing? it just feels like these people really needed to get and actual professional writer to go over everything and make it easier to understand.
I haven't finished this book yet but it will not be long before I do. Very interesting and very well explained. I have enjoyed every word in this book. And it jumps right into the core facts that are a need to know for practical use and knowledge.
What is it with some of these fields (disaster research is another good one) - they spend an inordinate amount of time gushing on and on about the 'fathers of the field' as if to suggest that no other humans alive could have done what they did. Don't get me wrong, the pioneers of this and other fields are remarkable people, but if I want to read a biography, I'll buy one. This book spends far too much time on the history of the field and too little on today's practical applications. It gets the job done, but you can tear a lot of pages out when you get it and it won't diminish your knowledge a hoot.
This is an extremely comprehensive text book that I'm glad I bought, so will have to reference throughout my career and even beyond. Even though technology will change, the concepts that are taught and explained in the text should be applicable in any environment of Geospatial Information.
I found this book to be a bit difficult to read through but overall it was an excellent textbook for my class. Good reference for GIS information.

My daughter loves this series and she's BEGGING me to buy the next book. There is no next book! The end of the series says 'To Be Continued...' so I'm assuming there will be more. The storyline is great, and I was pleased with the writing as I assumed it would be more comic book-like, which it's not. The artwork is so visually interesting and beautifully done. This series is our first experience with graphic novels, and it didn't disappoint!
My 10 year old loves these. Very impressed he wanted the whole series!
She asked for these in one of her school book orders, but decided to get her the entire series for Christmas. She is going to be SO excited when she opens them up!! Arrived in excellent condition. Thank you!!

David Livermore is a very knowledgeable and experienced advocator in cross-cultural interactions, and he synthesizes the aspects of cultural intelligence very well in this book. The aim of his book is to teach habits that provide for continual learning of how to love those across the chasm of difference. He makes clear that the source, goal, and means of doing so is only possible through Christ’s power in reconciliation and restoration. Livermore explains that cultural intelligence (CQ) is centralized in our ability to move from the desire to love to being able to effectively express it in order to embody who Christ is and the authenticity of the Gospel. Yet he emphasizes that this is not simply through a behavioral modification, but a personal transformation. This is especially important to learn at this time when global communication is becoming faster and more accessible, and cross-cultural encounters are now very common in day-to-day American life. This book is also very applicable to ministry both in foreign and domestic situations, and covers ground on improving interactions within the church and society’s sociocultural, generational, and organizational differences.Livermore splits the book into four parts that correlate to the knowledge, interpretive, perseverance, and behavioral elements of developing cultural intelligence. He begins by revealing the values that underlie America’s diverse cultural, including the “pursuit of happiness†and informality, and a discussion of how culture is both in the artifacts and deeper interpretations. The book then moves forward to identify the characteristics of socioethnic, generational, and organizational differences, and the spectrum within their values that may be expressed in our choices and perceptions. These include short vs. long-term time orientations, being vs. doing achievements, and individualistic vs. collectivist personal identifications. He then explains interpretive CQ by challenging the reader to “take the cruise control off†and foster awareness through analyzing how we subconsciously label our world and categorize differences. This takes learning how accept discomfort, fostering a receptive mindset to Christ’s work. Livermore concludes with a discussion on building an action/reflection praxis that can lead to a genuine empathy that perseveres in challenges as well as a heightened discernment of when to flex or not flex our behaviors in adapting to cross-cultural situations.One of Livermore’s greatest strengths throughout the book is his ability to synthesize his experiences, both mistakes and successes, into the sections. This makes his points very applicable and understandable, yet also reveals the honesty and growth necessary in CQ. However, he could improve his discussion in the book on the importance of language and the structural aspects of it that indicate cognition differences in communication. Most especially, this book applies to ministry leaders and even more specifically to youth pastors who are engaging in our diversifying world.
I am a graduating senior at Pepperdine University enrolled in a course on multicultural ministry. This book is an assigned textbook for that course, and it is immensely useful in outlining the importance of being culturally aware when doing ministry. In it, David Livermore provides a framework for improving cross-cultural interactions, discussions, and missions. He writes, “That’s our destination in this journey—learning how to effectively express love for people unlike us†(13). Livermore’s goal is to assist us as Christians in gaining the ability to love people who are different from us. As someone who has participated in missionary efforts in several countries and who currently directs the Global Learning Center at Grand Rapids Theological Seminary, Livermore is highly qualified to write this text and share his experiences. The greatest strengths of this book include the effectiveness of its structure, the emphasis it places on cross-cultural interactions within our own nation, and the connections to God it allows for. Divided into four sections based on the four types of cultural intelligence, the structure is easy to follow and promotes the creation of achievable, distinct goals for everyone. A huge takeaway from this book is the focus on the diversity of our own nation, for that is a reality that we need to consider when developing cultural intelligence. I appreciate the reference to God as the Holy Other, for that places our misunderstandings of those around us into a much needed perspective that God invites us to experience: Himself as incredibly, beautifully different from us. Yet, God reaches across the chasm of difference and makes every effort to meet us where we are. Some complaints that arise after reading this book involve its inability to successfully describe race relations in the United States, its neglect of culture shock, and its limitations of readers in many ways. I understand that it is difficult to concisely speak about the problem of race relations, but Livermore could certainly have made a greater effort in this regard. He mentions culture shock only briefly, and this seems to be an important part of cross-cultural missions that should be addressed more thoroughly with suggestions for overcoming it. This book limits its readers by providing a seemingly exhaustive list of helpful tasks in the final chapter that does not leave much room for creativity or individual interaction with God. Nevertheless, this book’s strengths far outweigh its weaknesses. This book has certainly shaped my understanding of what cultural intelligence looks like in our modern, connected world. It is encouraging in that I do not have to wait until being overseas to engage cross-culturally. Indeed, this book is most useful for people of any age or background who desire to be involved in God’s kingdom, for cross-cultural interactions happen in our very own neighborhoods and cities. On another note, I will be teaching English and doing mission work overseas next year, and I trust that the concepts from this book will assist me tremendously. For now, I am most concerned with being mindful not only in cross-cultural situations but in every day that I have the pleasure of living.
