The title, Time For Wanderlust: Planning Your Retirement Renaissance, should be taken quite literally. It is not a nuts and bolts guide to the finances and material needs to pursue ones “Wander Lust,†but rather, a primer for finding philosophical “rebirth,†after your full time working years come to an end.The Author, Forrest J. Wright, presents a part memoir, part self-help, part introduction to philosophy textbook. His self-described purpose is to make an argument for leisure, and for using leisure to make time to find transcendence, which he seeks to define with a comprehensive compiling of the history of Philosophy leading up to his own personal philosophy on retirement.I was interested in the author’s own experiences of transcendence. Moments that stick out in his mind that defy reality and yet also seem more real than real. Reading the book made me think back to moments where I felt that sense. Where the world seemed to come together and make sense in its majesty. As I read the book I found myself thinking, I wonder if the author has read Siddhartha, and then there it was, mentioned in the third section.I had only a few quibbles. The most prominent being the reference to WWII and FDR’s suggestion that saving through war bonds was patriotic. I am a professional historian who spends much of my time trying to convince people that the total war economy of WWII was actually an elaborate shell game intended to hide the cost of the war and prevent inflation, and that the command economy probably did more harm than good. But that is my hang up and is immaterial to the authors point.I also wish I knew more about the author’s other moments of transcendence, and why he needed to wait until retirement for the Philosophical rebirth? It seems to me that the transcendent moments he mentions come well before. The most prominent being his childhood desire to exist in thoughtful leisure.I think ultimately this book belongs more in the Philosophy category than the retirement planning category. It is less a primer, than the authors personal journey. It is a conversation in his philosophy and its foundations and how these might be valuable. Which gives him the position the distinguished position of another link in the chain of human philosophical exploration. I congratulate him on using his leisure time wisely!
A Review: Time for Wonderlust: Planning Your Retirement RenaissanceIn the very title of this work, “Wonderlust,†despite being routinely autocorrect rejected, is a cleverly coined term that tells the reader upfront that this is not going to be a typical how-to guide to retirement planning.In that same title, “Renaissance†hints at what is ahead in this book – guidance that will lead retirees to view the new life ahead as a chance for rebirth, now that the often obsessive obligations and deadening routines of the work world have been set aside.Essentially, this is a book of big thoughts – big ideas. It distills both deep philosophical concepts with practical insights to create, all at once, a guide to the search for meaning obscured by life’s early preoccupations.Mill, Thoreau, Marx, Twain, Plato, Veblen, Sartre, Keynes, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer…they’re all here, and armies more, sharing ideas plain and profound. Ontological and epistemological questions are explored. Existentialism and the axial age, explained. The benefits of zazen and “peak experiences,†examined.It’s both an exhausting, and exhilarating, trip.I do think that one key concept in this book could stand some rethinking, or at least a rewording. The author promotes the idea that the pursuit of cultural/intellectual/ philosophical “leisure†is the means to achieving the transcendence that can give us a glimpse of true meaning and fulfillment.It’s that “leisure†word that is troublesome. The author even acknowledges this problem: “Leisure has had a bad press.†(p. 63) So I recommend that he simply avoid this losing fight and instead substitute the word “rigor†in leisure’s place. Americans can far better accept the value of pursuing “cultural rigor†or “intellectual rigor†or “philosophical rigor.†That is, after all, what the author is recommending in this book – a disciplined, determined, rigorous pursuit of the big, philosophical ideas that can expose us – even if only for fleeting moments – to meaningful living.And it would be a shame if early readers, slaves to our Puritan roots and current work ethics, would encounter and quickly reject this “leisure†concept – and then the enriching ideas that follow.In summary, I concluded my reading with this deep impression: Retirement is both a great reward – and responsibility. It’s not about doing – it’s about becoming. I bought this guide specifically for an everyday perspective on traveling Uruguay. No professional outlook wanted, as I am not a pro traveler.Yes, there were the very specific places to visit (and why) that you would also get in a more mainstream guide. Just not an extensive list of them. What was covered, was in depth. Claudia's book delivered the poignant insights I was looking for.Four stars, not five, because I was hoping for more locations in Uruguay to be covered.
This book does have a lot of good guide material and many pictures. Unfortunately, the pictures cover most of the writing and they are too small. This book needs to be re-formatted so it can be legible.
Purchased the book to read up about Uraguay before my trip. Although it was a quick, easy read and has some helpful points, it lacked order and can be quite repetitive.

The Art of The Last of Us by Dark Horse Books is a must for any Last of Us fan. The book is 176 pages and they load the pages with art so there's little wasted space. With this book you will get many variations of the characters and environments. Although with the characters I found that almost every single one is a frontal pose of a character with variations in clothing, the face, or something like that. This is not bad since their are a lot of them and they cover a lot of characters but I wish there were more angles and such, but none the less its still amazing.The Book is divided into 7 chapters.1. The Introduction is 2 pages and just talks about the creators making the game and stuff.2. Joel and Ellie is 16 pages and has lots of different poses and variations of the two. There is commentary by the artists about what went through their minds when making the sketches and such which really lets you understand what they were thinking when they made the characters. Also they have pictures of how they were going to have Ellie look but switched to how she actually does look so that was cool to see how they first wanted her to look.3.The Journey is 93 pages and has sketches and pictures of a bunch of characters and scenes that you encounter throughout the game. There's soldiers, thugs, some of the other main characters, and plenty of abandoned house and buildings. Their is lots of content here and the pages are jam packed. The concept art of the environments are really detailed and have excellent lighting.4. The Infected is 29 pages and has lots of the different infected monsters. The pictures put you up close and personal to the infected and lets you see all the grossest features. From the bumps, blood, scars, and everything else they made sure to show just how ugly/scary the infected are. This chapter was really cool to look at and highly detailed.5. The World is 6 pages and has really nothing to it except some signs and weapons which were not really all that great or detailed. There's bows, garden tools, guns, and pieces of metal for the weapons shown.6. Marketing is 14 pages and has the art they used to promote the game and its basically just some concept art like what they have on the cover of the game and such.7. The American Dream is 5 pages and is art from the comic book so if you like comic books you might enjoy this section since its just simple drawings comic book style.Overall this book is a must for any fan of the game. It has lots of character variations and artist comments which really help you know just what went through their minds when making the characters and such. The environmental art is awesome and highly detailed with excellent lighting and color. The scenes show everything from old farms, run down cities, or even the quarantine zone. The infected look gruesome and lifelike and its really gross the amount of detail they put in some of the pictures, but that is what makes this book so good. Finally if your looking for some good character art this book has loads of it and although its mostly all frontal view it still is quite nice to look at and has many variations and characters. I highly recommend this art book and found it to be one of the better game art books.
The Art of Last of Us is a wonderful art book to Naughty Dog's latest game. I also have the Uncharted 2 art book and I love that book. I love this one too.This book is packed with character designs and environment art. The concept art is top notch.All the characters and infected are drawn out in detail and colour. There are various designs for each character. Lots to see. The infected, if you have not played the game, are not traditional zombies. They have been infected by some deadly fungus that grows and consumes the human body. You get to see some interesting and scary designs that you would not get from typical zombies.The environment art are painted with astonishing amount of detail that makes everything seem so real. There are the devastated towns, rundown buildings, deserted streets and ransacked rooms. Most scenes depicted will make you wonder what the hell happened there. The level of realism you see here is unmatched even by big budget movie sets.Spoilers appear in the book either as text or pictures. So definitely play the game first before going through the book. Other than that, there's not much text except the occasional comments on the art and game.This is a fantastic video game art book. JUST BEAUTIFUL!This is certainly a big and beautiful assemble of the greatest conceptual artworks I ever saw together, I must say Naughty Dog have some of the most talented artists in the industry nowadays, the artworks are really beautiful and it's nice to see some earlier versions of characters and environments of the game in those pages, it really added more dept in the understanding of the game goal and artistic vision.Why not give credits for the artists?As I said, Naughty Dog have some the most talented artists in the industry nowadays, like Maciej Kuciara, James Paick, Aaron Limonick, John Sweeney, Eytan Zana, Shaddy Safadi, Marek Okon, Nick Gindraux, Hyoung Nam, and Alexandria Neonakis, people that worked hard to make this game beautiful but in the end, this compilation or celebration of great artworks end up not having a single artist name on it. It's a shame that they didn't gave the artists some recognition for their big hit as well. I just couldn't find credits for the artists anywhere in the book, just the directors are credited. I think it is a bit unfair and very close minded for a company with such a big creativity in making games.I know that from a company point of view give to much credit for a employee can be a path to lose them to another company, but in a internet generation of easy to find information, they should know that there are other and nicer ways to keep a employee happy enough to not leave the company. Anyway, just unfair.This is a GREAT BOOK! One of the best game art-books on the last 2 years.

As mentioned before in previous reviews of Berkeley Breathed book reviews, this is for children of all ages, including us 69 year old's. I have pretty much everything ever published starting with the original Bloom County strips. He tends to drop out and come back a few years later with a new approach, some new characters, but then starts incorporating his standard stable of stars. The one constant through out the strip series is the indomitable Penguin Opus (Refer back to meeting Boy George). If the only previous reference for his work is the much maligned, though not entirely correctly, "Mars Needs Mom" movie, then the current series of books, starting with "Bloom County Episode XI, A New Hope", will be a bit confusing as to who all these characters are. Especially if you are not familiar with the "Outland" or "Opus" series. My best suggestion is go out and buy the first book in each of those series to acquaint yourself with many of the characters brought back for the BC reboot. Warning, you will get hooked and purchase all of them. In an era of a fractured and seemingly hopeless political climate, what we need now is humor, pathos, and belief that there is still an innocence and sense of wonder left in our turgid World. Thank you Mr. Breathed for breathing life and joy back in to my soul. Thank you for bringing back Rosebud, the "Last Basselope". Thank you for the evolution of Steve Dallas from hopelessly self centered immoral womanizer to "Sith Lord Sexy Pants" to little, ill, "Jedi Sam the Lion". And thank you for bring back Opus after a 25 year slumber. I still have my various incarnations of Opus (Be my love monkey) plush dolls as well as my coveted Bill the Cat (Thppfft) doll. And thanks for making me laugh again. Oh, and each line has a double space Mr. Opus. Continue the revolution...
Bloom County shenanigans are back in Berkeley's new book. The denizens of Bloom County really have a way of taking current events and cranking them up a notch to show us how absurd they can be. Since he is writing freer and not constrained to a newspaper deadline, he can respond quickly to current events. This is evident in this book. However, without proper context, I feel some of the jokes will be lost as time passes. It would have been nice to include a little note, or date, of the original posting of some of the comics, like when Carrie Fisher died, so that ten years from now, we can understand how disheartening Opus feels. Overall, the book is great and will bring laughter into your world.
BC is one of those collections I reread every couple years just because. The cartooning in this one is gorgeous no question but there is very little sense of story or even linear direction. Some strips trend toward the absurd with out of context references that are lost on me. I'm not sure who's aged more me or Mr. Breathed. I will always owe a hearty thank you to the author but this one won't be joining the biannual reread anytime soon.
Its Opus. Opus is wonderful. And so is this book. Wish I could get the Kindle edition, but I did that with another similar book and it was too small to read and I could NOT make the picture bigger. I still miss the comic strips. I still have my stuffed OPUS. Right now he is on the couch with me. I think "adults" should be able to have stuffed toys. Lost my Bill the Cat when I last moved. Very sad. You will love this book.
I've been a Bloom County fan for many years, so I was THRILLED when Breathed rebooted it on Facebook a couple of years ago. The man has not only NOT lost his touch, he's taken his art to new heights. This is the second book since the reboot, and it's GLORIOUS! Do yourself a favour and purchase this book IMMEDIATELY! Then, pour yourself some tea and work your way SLOWLY through the book. Much like tea, it's best when taken slowly to savor the experience.
Has it been 25 years since Breathed drew Opus and the gang? I 've been reading the new Bloom County at GoComics and had to get this book. Berkeley has outdone himself, again.
New Bloom County keeping the series updated to today times.
Not as good as I expected, but memory's always golden. Definitely a happy read, though, and I'm glad I bought it.

Reading this fine book on Kindle at the same time able to access baseball player info on Wikipedia and additional internet stat sites is almost as good as being at the ballpark for the grand experience. The only missing item is a video link to the game described in the book
I love baseball books--this is one of the best I've read since Keith Hernandez's classic Pure Baseball. The fan will want to think about how the game has declined since Hernandez wrote his book back in the early 90's. Money has mostly been the culprit, but Meyer shows how pitching and pitching specialists (we now have the opener thanks to the Rays), the ubiquitous strikeout (no one throws more than five innings so everyone throws 95 mph), and the home run have replaced fundamental parts of the game like base running, bunting, pitchers who throw complete games, contact hitting, and the hit and run (remember the hit and run?). The analysis of post-modern baseball in Power Ball is brilliant. I've felt that the game was dying for years now; the author shows us why this is true, but how we can still enjoy what is a pale imitation of what once was our National Pasttime.
If you love baseball, even if you just like baseball and understand the game, this is a must read. The entire book takes place during one Oakland A’s/Houston Astros game in 2017. While the action is described, one half inning per chapter, Neyer digresses into velocity, launch angles and a hundred other topics that sound dull but aren’t. I knew the use of Bill James-style sabermetics had changed the game, but I had no idea it had been taken so far.
In writing "Power Ball," author Rob Neyer has very cleverly, and very effectively, chosen to dissect the details of a single baseball game as a way of examining the state of Major League Baseball as a whole. The result is an inning-by-inning, sometimes a pitch-by-pitch,, chronicle of a game that was played late in the 2017 season between the Houston Astros and the Oakland A's. This book stands of the shoulders of Michael Lewis's iconic "Moneyball." In choosing to examine one game as a microcosm of baseball, Neyer also follows in the footsteps of Arnold Hano, who wrote "A Day In The Bleachers," and Dan Okrent, who authored "Nine Innings."This is simply one of the most engaging baseball books I have read in recent memory. The author uses specific situations in the unfolding game between the Astros and the A's to highlight significant changes in baseball: the emergence of a whole generation of power pitchers who can hurl over 100 MPH, the role of the defensive shift, the disappearance of the bunt, the changing perception of strikeouts by batters, the pace of the game, the out sized dominance of players of short stature, the new generation of super statistics, launch angle, exit velocity, etc.Having attended literally thousands of baseball games in my lifetime, and having taken in thousands more via radio and TV, I am more than a casual fan of the game, Yet each chapter of this book offered me new insights into aspects of the game I had not previously considered.If you love baseball, then this book is a MUST READ!Enjoy!
'Powerball' is a fun, detail-rich analysis of modern day baseball. What exactly that entails is a pretty random slew of thoughts and passages. Well it's not entirely random. At the center of the book is the game between the Astro's and the A's. The chapters are divided up by the innings. Visitors First, Home First, Etc. Each chapter gives a little info on what is happening in the game. This is where the author is able to break off into the different subjects encompassing the book. For example, the book may mention a play the catcher makes and continue talking about catchers for a while. This seems like an interesting premise but it felt like it wasn't the best way to go and made the book feel quite tangential. I wish it had been more straightforward with the chapters divided by subject. It's strange reading a book where the author is constantly changing subjects in a train of thought sort of way. It kind of makes it feel like there really isn't a point to the whole thing but rather just a collection of random thoughts.Having said that though, I quite enjoyed the book. If you love baseball, you'll finds lots to like here. There are countless subjects explored in this book. They range from a few paragraphs to a few pages. But don't think of this as another 'Moneyball.' You won't be recommending it to your non-baseball friends. But that's OK. It offers plenty of interesting insights into the post-Moneyball game. Particularly interesting is the thought that 'Moneyball' didn't change baseball as much as we might assume. Or at least not in the way we think. Maybe we should have gathered this based on the fact that the A's haven't exactly been rolling in the championships post-2001. Lots of things have changed over the past couple of decades though and that is all covered here. The book is bursting with interesting facts.For some reason I went into this book thinking it would be very serious. But actually it is quite lighthearted and fun. This was a bit of a relief as it can be quite boring reading someone that is too full of their own ideas. Luckily, that is not the case here. While I don't think this is a must read by any means, it's certainly entertaining while it lasts. If you're a die-hard fan it's worth picking up. If you're searching for your first baseball book, you could do better elsewhere.
I've been a baseball fan my entire life...I'm 51...And it's books like this that a true baseball fan can relate to. The details and intricacies of today's game are detailed so that not only can a serious fan appreciate the game more, but the casual fan can get a deeper understanding of why Baseball is the best sport in spite of itself.I would recommend this book to all levels of fans. I look forward to next season after having read this book. This book proves that there is always another level to this sport...it's constantly evolving, yet in so many ways it still the same game that I loved when I was a kid.
Probably not breaking news but any content that Rob Neyer creates is essential to digest if you're a fan of baseball. In "Power Ball" we get his master work, a wonderfully written survey of the game today.
