Gordon's criticism of modern-day preaching is a necessary one since many have given up trying to improve upon their preaching. He laments that many congregations have excused their pastor's weakness in preaching by emphasizing their other areas of strength such as counseling or administrative skills. Gordon's conclusion for anemic preaching is that the media has affected and infected the preacher's thinking, writing, and preaching. Preachers aren't able to concentrate for long periods of time as they are constantly distracted by the media.Gordon's solutions are not popular. He suggests that to be a good preacher one must be a good reader of ancient texts and master the ability to communicate that text in written form. He suggests writing letters by hand instead of email. His most controversial solution is that every preacher should receive an annual review of their preaching.Gordon writes as a dying man to dying men. Gordon's cancer allowed him to confront his fellow preachers with a focused urgency in the weighty task of preaching God's Word.
Written for the man in the pews. Brother Gordon illuminates the techno-cultural reasons that the average seminary graduate is not ready for the pulpit. In this day and age, we have shunted away from reading. All the average college student has grown up with are sound bites. Perhaps less than one percent have ever read one of the Great Books of the Western World, let alone any great work by so many of the wonderful authors of 18th, 19th and early 20th century novels. Gordons point is well taken. When you can't read well and can't write well, you will never be able to preach well
The title is severe enough as to make no apologies for the content, so the only critique left for the potential reader is to determine whether or not the author convincingly defended his thesis. I believe he did. Like Gordon and his wife, I have suffered under years of poor preaching in my local church.What are the reasons? Gordon makes a case that the gospel is being smothered by poor exposition of God's word. He goes on to suggest a number of ways preachers can get it right. They all will require both the preacher and the saints to do things differently. If you are attracted by the title of this book, you will not be disappointed by the contents. If you are an elder in your church and struggle with preaching, know then that these admonitions and advice also pertain to you and will require you to do some things differently.I did not give this book five stars because I believe that Gordon might have been a bit more exhaustive with recommendations on how to preach, even if that was not what the book submitted as its thtesis. One suggestion that I have found helpful has been the memorization of Scripture because memorization obliges deep investigation and deep investigation leads to deep understanding and deep understanding leads to deep exposition which when preached, leads to transformed bodies in Christ.
Gordon contends that Johnny can’t preach because Johnny can’t read or write due to the negative influences technological advances have had on the upcoming generations. Gordon claims that the fast pace of electronic media has given people an inability to pay attention and take time to read things carefullly. This inability to read texts carefully results with people not reading their Bibles closing, especially preachers who cannot distinguish the nuanced differences of similar texts. Furthermore, because preachers can’t distinguish the nuanced differences, they preach in generalities and apply their sermons in generalities.Not only can Johnny not read, but Johnny can’t write. Gordon insists that inventions such as the telephone are directly responsible for people’s inability to write oranganized compositions. Since preachers are so used to having disorganized telephone conversations and no longer write hand-written letters, their sermons lack unity. They preach disorganized messages with no central theme or point, leaving the hearers lost and confused.After diagnosing this problems, Gordon offers both warnings related to preaching fallacies and advice about how to improve as a preacher, including reading frequently, writing often, and focusing on preaching Christ-centered, redemptive sermons.This book is a valuable tool for preachers who wish to understand the adverse effects of technological advances on the culture as well as how to become better preachers.
Gordon takes a hard-line stance on a problem that is even more prevalent today than he could have imagined when first penning this book in 2004. I feel like seeing Mary Ann's struggle to keep APF a secret from her relationship would be more entertaining. Just my opinion though.
This was a wonderfully creative literary work. The characters were idealistic and profound. The story line brought to the light a whole new different world out of the hustle and bustle of life. These characters showed they were not in fear of letting go of their inhibitions.

One of the main characters changes from being a shy inhibited farmgirl to an uninhibited sexual tigress over the course of just 1 semester. Hey it can happen. And this is a quick read so we don't have all day. The dialog is real, fast paced, and funny too. I enjoyed it and couldn't put it down.

Megan Kreiner grew up on Long Island, New York, in a home where art and art projects were a daily part of life. Coming from a long line of knitters and crocheters, Megan learned the craft at an early age from her grandmother, her aunt, and her mother. Overall, I am impressed by the quality of this kit. The kit includes enough yarn to finish two classic Disney projects, specifically Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck and after that, you will need to purchase additional yarn, fiberfill, floss, and felt to finish more characters. The kit does not say exactly what size the yarn is but it seems to be at most a 3 in weight and it appears to be acrylic and/or wool rather than cotton. I have also purchased the Peanuts kit and the yarn in the Disney kit seems to be a better quality. The colors of yarn included are: white, black, dark blue, yellow, and red. The felt included is black, light blue, and white. The floss is black and white and appears to be cotton. Also included is a tapestry needle (for the floss), an inexpensive crochet hook in size 4.00 (US G/6) and fiberfill. There are also fairly detailed instructions including many diagrams.While the yarn in this kit is very nice, I will be using my own stash to be sure that the sizes, colors, look, and feel of my characters are consistent. The instructions are detailed but I don't think that this is a project for most beginners. It uses techniques that crocheters with a bit more experience would feel comfortable with. If you are a beginner, just be sure you have access to someone or a website that can give you answers if you have any questions about the instructions.The book includes instructions for 12 Classic Disney characters which is outstanding. These include: Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Daisy Duck, Goofy, Pluto, Chip 'n' Dale, Dumbo, Bambi, Lay, Pinocchio, and Jiminy Cricket. I have only one a complaint: if you are going to give us a Lady project, you should also have given us Tramp - they are a couple just as Mickey and Minnie and Donald and Daisy are couples. I was disappointed that Winnie the Pooh was missing from this kit until the designer let me know (in comments below) that Winnie was available in a separate kit along with 11 other characters from the Hundred Acre Wood. The characters are all quite recognizable and are sure to be a hit for any classic Disney fan. My entire family and especially my younger daughter have loved Disney for years so I will have a lot of fun crocheting these amigurumi characters. When we lived in Southern California (for many years), I always purchased season passes so we could go to Disneyland many times during the year.The hook is okay but I prefer to use my own for ergonomic reasons. The characters look to be fairly small - if you want to make them larger, use thicker yarn and larger hooks. The instructions should work well no matter the size. The tapestry needle is decent and works well for the embroidery purposes in the instructions. There are templates for the felt - which seems to be how the eyes and some other details are made. I will probably figure out how to embroider the eyes as I prefer that over felt whether it is glued or sewn on.The Peanuts kit had an issue in that they failed to give instructions for how to make the embroidery details that each of the characters requires. That is not true at all in this Disney book. While the instructions are not the best, they do give photos of the stitches in progress and also provide the names of the embroidery stitches you will use: long stitch, running stitch, back stitch, overcast stitch, and whip stitch. It should be fairly easy for you to find more detailed instructions on the Internet. I am already familiar with these stitches so the lack of great detail in this area is not an issue for me. There are also photographs showing how to add hair and made a twisted tail.On the whole, I really like the kit and the instructions and recommend it to an intermediate or above crocheter without hesitation. I have also purchased the Peanuts Kit and the Star Wars Kit by this company as well as the Winnie the Pooh Kit (which was distributed by another company and is being released exclusively on another site as I write this review.) All of the kits are of good quality and I have been enjoying crocheting the various characters.
The instructions are fairly easy to follow if you have a decent understanding of crochet terms, but there is also a guide in the front that explains the terms if you’re uncertain. I have not used the yarn that came with the kit, but like others have said a hook one size smaller gives great results. The Minnie Mouse I made came out so well that a coworker asked me to make more characters for her. Happy I made the purchase.
What a great kit! I loved the patterns! Easy to follow and cute end product. The material gives you JUST enough for the two characters, and I fell short. I used a thicker yarn for the Minnie and preferred the look and feel of it (instead of the yarn provided)
I love it I've made several and they all are easy and precious. I sew them to a small crocheted blanket and make huggies out of them or to the top of a crocheted golf head cover and give them as gifts.
The materials in the kit are advertised as worsted weight yarn. They are much lighter than worsted weight - and split with almost every stitch. Also, when the recommended hook (a cheap one is included in the kit) is used, there is not enough yarn to complete the figure. Next time, I will look for instruction books only - and buy my own supplies!
This kit really had enough materials for 2 characters. (I hate when kits run short.) My grandson loves his first 2 characters, I plan to make more for him. The characters are realistic enough that my young grandson could easily recognize them.
I love this product the book is great the instructions are easy to follow the only thing is the yarn that they send with it is a little thin you're better off to going and buying different yarn but when I made the products with other yard they turned out amazing I'm in love with it.

About the Author
A recognized leader in the Multiethnic Church Movement, Mark planted the Mosaic Church of Central Arkansas in 2001 where he continues to serve as Directional Leader. In 2004, he co-founded the Mosaix Global Network with Dr. George Yancey and today serves as its president, and convenor of the triennial National Multi-ethnic Church Conference. In 2008, he launched Vine and Village and remains active on the board of this 501(c)(3) non-profit focused on spiritual, social, and financial engagement and transformation in Little Rock's University District, the 72204 ZIP code. Mark has written six books including his latest, Disruption: Repurposing the Church to Redeem the Community (Thomas Nelson, March 2017); and Multiethnic Conversations: an Eight Week Guide to Unity in Your Church (Wesleyan Publishing House, October 2016), the first daily devotional, small group curriculum on the subject for people in the pews. His book, Building a Healthy Multi-Ethnic Church (Jossey-Bass, 2007), was a finalist for a Christianity Today Book of the Year Award (2008) and for a Resource of the Year Award (2008) sponsored by Outreach Magazine. Mark begins the book explaining the concept of "disruption" in the business world, and relates how the same concepts apply to the church. Much of the rest of the book focuses on applications of this principle in the church world, using the story of Mosaic as the backdrop. This is real world stuff, not academic theory. One of the most useful sections describes the establishment and purpose of Vine and Village, the churches umbrella 501 (c)(3). Churches and church networks stand to learn a lot from their ideas of adding a financial element to the spiritual and social elements most churches use to make an impact.The underlying theme of this work has to do with the intentionality with which this church has built a diverse, multi-ethnic congregation that truly reflects the makeup of their community. Read along with Mark's other books which focus on building a multi-ethnic church, Disruption is a must read for church leaders wanting their church to be relevant in the world we now live in.
I was mesmerized, conviction, affirmed, and challenged as I read this book. The Holy Spirit was constantly speaking to my heart. Before I even finished the book I bought a copy and sent it to my former associate pastor to whom I turned my last pastorate over to. This book is a Must-Read!
If we did half of what’s in the book we would change the world! I highly recommend the book to all. Especially those who are tired of watching our world fall apart and wanting to do something.
