I can say that Paul Bowles is one of my favorite writers and now having read Travels: Collected Writings 1950-1993 (2010), I have finished reading all of his available writings. This collection is mostly made up of pieces that were, collected earlier in, Their Heads Are Green and Their Hands Are Blue (1963). I think if there were that many pieces in a collection by another writer I might have not bothered with the collection or skipped those pieces. But I decided to re-read them and savor the familiarity and evocative scenes described Bowles who has a gift of bringing the atmosphere of a place to life, for example the Sahara Desert in "Baptism of Solitude," as well as the people that populate those specific places, like in "Mustapha and his Friends." There are two excellent pieces about his travels into countryside and mountains of Morocco to record the traditional music there that is some of his best writing in "The Route to Tassemit" and "The Rif, to Music." In those pieces, in particular, he brings Morocco and the inhabitants to life. But he awakened an interest for me in his in his part-time home in Ceylon, that is the subject of "Fishtraps and Private Business." I plan to make a pilgrimage to his private island on my visit there next month. The book is arranged chronologically by editor Mark Ellingham and contains mostly travel pieces but also travel-oriented journals, introductions to photographic books, and even a glossary of kif terms for a 1960s books on cannabis. It includes an introduction by one of my favorite travel writers Paul Theroux as well. I suspect some of the material may have been cannibalized for Bowles' autobiography, Without Stopping, which I also recently read. The earliest pieces are from Bowles early days as a teenager in France-among the 30 uncollected writings spread throughout the book. There were a number of pieces from the now defunct Holiday magazine that were among my favorites as well: "How to Live on a Part-Time Island" (another piece that inspired me to visit Ceylon), "Madeira" (on the isolat4ed Portuguese island), "Window on the Past" (about Spain), as well as several pieces on Morocco and cities in Morocco. I was impressed with pieces about travel in Istanbul ("A Man Must Not Be Very Moslem"), India ("Notes Mailed at Nagercoil), the Mau Mau uprising in Kenya ("Letter from Kenya") as well as a piece about the civil war in neighboring Algeria ("Sad for U.S., Sad for Algeria"). I think the following quote from "Windows on the Past" sums up Bowles' perspective on travel writing: If I am faced with the decision of choosing between visiting a circus and a cathedral, a cafe and a public monument, or a fiesta and a museum, I'm afraid I shall normally take the circus, the cafe, and the fiesta, trusting to luck that I shall manage to see the other s later. I supposed I'm not what today is called culture-minded. Perhaps the that is because the culture of a land at any given moment is the people who live in it and the lives they lead in it, not the possessions they have inherited from those who came before. They may or may not profit by their legacy. If they do, so much the better for them; but whether they do or do not, their culture is represented by them and not by their history.I feel a sort of kinship with Bowles and hope to see as much as he has seen. I can't help but note that he did it so much earlier than others and had to struggle and suffer in order to do so. Bowles was not a fan of progress and I suspect most travel today would have been too tame for his type of adventure lust-very much a trailblazer and original thinker.
"Travels," the collected writings of Paul Bowles' is my first exposure to his writing. I purchased this book as a result of reading Jeff Greenwald's "The Size of the World," where Greenwald is received by Bowles in his home in Tangier and, in their ensuing dialogue, began to take measure of the man. I found it fascinating that Bowles chose to live within a culture where the seeking of solitude is considered an aberrant behavior, a behavior Bowles strongly insisted upon but never verbalized until Greenwald put the reason into print: Bowles has never been able to sleep in the same room with another person..."it's something I could never do, never in my whole life." My objective, when reading a book on travel, is to experience the land, the people, the culture in its fullest dimension through the lens of someone from my own culture. To that end, Bowles delivers. His philosophy on what makes a travel book "is the story of what happened to one person in a particular place" and where "the personality of the author is the decisive element." His accounts are at once poetic, politically astute, and incorporates the dialogue and cultural habits of the inhabitants while directing the reader to conclusions that conform to his informative opinion. While some readers argue that the repetitiveness of this book of collective writings is its downfall, I found the repetitiveness helpful in that it replayed the images of earlier chapters, images I hope to see for myself since Morocco is on my bucket list.
Wonderful to have his many travel essays gathered from various sources and arranged chronologically. That unique blend of romance and reality that distinguishes Bowles from so many other travel writers is still refreshing after all these years. He was the last of a generation, and this collection allows us to follow him back over the course of an amazing life.
Great travel writer, without trying to be one. His prose and character descriptions are flawless. I read it quickly and became addicted to his writing.
And Bowles’s pieces on Morocco over many years gave me a Morocco in prose that I truly appreciated. Enjoyed his insight on music in particular.
A riveting writer in the Beat era. He writes of travel adventures from Sri Lanka to Kenya to Morocco. Inspired me to view the nineties film from his novel set in Morocco, The Sheltering Sky.
Terric travel writing. Wonderfully observant and imaginative.
If you have ever yearned to read another great Paul Bowles book but knew it was not to be, than I recommend you go on a travel with him to the most exotic parts of our world. Through the eyes and sensibilities of Mr. Bowles I felt the stirrings of danger in Morocco, Ceylon and even So. America. As an American Paul Bowles traveled extensively to learn about himself and put it on the page for us all to experience. Please don't miss this one.

It provides decent information on some older bottles 1800's thru about 1915, but only the rarer more expensive ones.It provides no historical information about each bottle, only a description and pricing. Also provides info on newer (vintage) bottles like Jim Beam whiskey bottles, Ezra Brooks whiskey, Avon bottles, miniature whiskey bottles, soda bottles, Violin & Banjo bottles. All the pictures are good quality and in color. If you're an average Joe (Jane) collector trying to identify a bottle that you dug up in the back yard this book probably won't help you.
Not at all what I expected. This book is not written for the weekend collector. This book is meant for someone whose income is wrapped up in buying and selling bottles. This tome does not cover the bottles that came from your great-grandmother or that neat bottle you found in the backyard when you were planting a tree. Do not waste your money if that is what you are looking for. If you want a clinical book to be able to classify bottles by the way their necks are shaped or the amount of bubbles in the glass this book will fit your needs well.
I got this book for about 75 cents plus shipping on Amazon and it is well worth the shipping and change, the color photos of the bottles are beautiful! Printed in China and I guess that is why they got the book so cheap and the great color photos printed, as color printing is not cheap in the USA.The photos of the colored glass Hutch bottle, ink bottles, old blob top sodas etc just really inspire me. Glad I got the book, the prices don't help me much but I sure enjoy the myriad of color photos.
Great history on bottle making and development. The price guide is directed towards common rare bottles, if that makes sense. There are plenty of other bottles that did not make their list. Most bottles in this book seem to be from the east coast. I wish there were more Rocky mountain region bottles.
Lots of useful pictures and information for the bottle collector in the familyWell worth the priceMy brother Love this!
Good book for Collectors. Just don't need this.
Good reference but about half of it focuses pretty 1900 and older bottles. I have mostly newer bottles I was looking for information on.
Lots of good info and photos.

Even though I read most of this in installments, I am glad to have it all in one hard copy, not only for future reference, but to loan out to family and friends who ask about getting started with gardening. The author draws on her background as an ecologist, as well as a decade's worth of gardening experience on her own homestead, to put together this clear and practical guide to building good soil. Her garden speaks for itself (just check out the pictures on her blog if you're still on the fence!) Highly recommended.
My best friend is a soil scientist with NMDA and she highly recommends this book. However we live in the Southwest desert and it’s mostly about soils in the East. I can still glean information about our western soil’s so I know it is a useful accurately-written book.
I like this book. It is simply written, so that anyone can understand. I want more science, but for that Anna recommends some other resources. I also like that it's about our neck of the woods, so her recommendations are pertinent to our climate zone. She covers a variety of topics pertaining to soil, and I plan to implement some of them in our garden this year, especially the humus-building cover crops. I give her 5 stars for doing a great job on her homestead (yeah, I know she moved), and for writing these books. I own and have read several of them, and recommend them all. These ain't no easy tasks - homesteading and writing, so kudos to Anna.
I found this book to be a pretty straight-forward sharing of knowledge about soil and how to build and manage it. It's easy to read and understand if you may not be such a technically minded person, but the science is solid for those of us who do like to know the scientific background for the information presented. It's open and honest, and I appreciate the sharing of both successes and failures for a down to earth approach to sharing important information all gardeners need to know. Read and learn!
I found a lot of useful information here on biochar, remineralization and other topics. The author also pointed out some facts about compost that I'd learned but rarely see in other gardening books, namely that the value of compost is dependent on what went into it and that you'll never generate as much compost as you need. You'll find plenty here on different kinds of organic mulches and the pitfalls to expect with them (weed seeds in straw, wood chips draining the soil of nitrogen and so on). There is also a section on building raised beds with a base layer of rotting wood, a practice I'd only recently heard of and see real potential in.Some of the advice is definitely going to be confined to rural areas due to smell issues. By this I mean the author's use of human manure and urine. The section on using black fly larva to compost food waste is another part that might cause trouble. I don't question their effectiveness so much as I feel it would offend the neighbors and risk bringing you a visit from your local police. Still, any gardening book will have suggestions you can't use for one reason or another, so this isn't a deal breaker for me. I enjoyed the book and plan on keeping it.
Well worth reading especially when ground is not growing much in the way of food. Soon it will be though. And I have found rosemary able to grow as long as the get water.
I liked this a lot. Practical experience of one gardener. May not apply to your area of the country, but was very interesting. A very well illustrated book.
Ms. Hess' firsthand knowledge and love of experimentation on her own soil is infectious. Already started some hugelkulture of my own.

Last August, our congregation and I began studying the second book of the Torah together...the fascinating book of Exodus. I have always had a deep love for the Old Testament, and have lamented the fact that Christians by and large are ignorant of it’s content, focusing at times almost exclusively on the New Testament. When I heard that Dennis Prager was writing a commentary on the Torah starting with Exodus, my ears perked up. I bought the book the day it came it. I have read the first half (which brings me up to where we are studying in our Wednesday night Bible study) and intend to finish it as we continue studying Exodus. But why would a Christian pastor buy a Jewish commentary and recommend other Christians read it?Here are two reasons:1. Dennis has devoted over fifty years of his life to the study and teaching of the Torah. He speaks Hebrew as well as he speaks English (which is very well, I might add!), and has immersed himself in the Hebrew of the Bible – both its grammar and its vocabulary. As one who doesn’t have that linguistic background, I appreciate his willingness to share this skill with others like myself.2. We are living in an age of unprecedented dialogue between Jews and Christians like none other in history. For me to participate in this God-honoring dialogue, I need to understand where my Jewish brothers and sisters are coming from. In addition, I have a great desire to share the good news of the gospel as found in the New Testament with my Jewish neighbors, as do millions of others Christians. Yet, how can I share my perspective with them if I don’t understand and respect their perspective? Here are excerpts from my review of this book on my blog (which you can find at waynenalljr.blogspot.com):This book is like no commentary I have ever read...and I have read from many of them. It is not stuffy at all. Dennis chose to write it in the first person and to include personal anecdotes where appropriate. What other commentary would quote Maimonides, Abraham Lincoln,...and Woody Allen?...Here are a few quotes from this book which caught my attention:...The central message of the Torah is “that God is good and demands we be good...is the only belief that will enable us to make a good world.â€...“People (today) greatly value knowledge and intelligence, but not wisdom. And the lack of wisdom—-certainly in America and the rest of the West – is directly related to the decline in biblical literacy. In the American past, virtually every home, no matter how poor, owned a Bible. It was the primary vehicle by which parents passed wisdom on to their children.â€...“The Torah is so different – morally, theologically, and in terms of wisdom – from anything else preceding it and, for that matter, from anything written since, that a reasonable person would have to conclude either moral supermen or God was responsible for it.†(I would put the entire Bible in this category, including the New Testament.)...“Another major reason I am convinced the Torah is not man-made is it so often depicts the people of the Book, the Jews, in a negative light....“Remembering – the good others have done, the evil others have done, and one’s moral obligations – is an indispensable aspect of a good and meaningful life.â€...“Biology is not destiny; you can be the child of an evil person and be a good person.â€...“Gratitude takes effort; resentment is effortless.†(So true!)I believe there is great value to this work for anyone who is seeking wisdom...whatever your religious background!
In my twenties, when I knew everything, was a hardcore liberal and a self proclaimed atheist (having been born and raised a Catholic), Sean Hannity brought me to conservatism. In my 30’s, I was too bogged down with my first marriage, getting a house, having a child, going through a divorce, and rebuilding my life to care much about anything else. In my 40’s, in addition to finding my loving wife, I found Dennis Prager. Mr. Prager is not a “firebrand conservative†who wants to get you all excited so that you may go out and shout others down. He is a calm, rational thinker. His mind is his weapon, his intellect is his tool, and his demeanor makes it difficult for a reasonable person to simply dismiss him, let alone dislike him. He utterly changed my debating style from “hard hitting, in your face†to “here are my facts, what do you have to say, let’s discuss itâ€. He is the epitome of the old saying, “you get more flies with honey than you do vinegarâ€.I had every intention of purchasing this book. In fact, I preordered it. I read the first chapter when he sent it to his fans, and I loved it. I purchased the kindle version for myself, and a hardcover copy for the Reverend of my church. When I saw how nice the book looked, I decided to purchase a hardcover copy for myself to proudly display in my home bookcase of “chosen booksâ€. I have since purchased an additional copy for my best friend. I’ll likely purchase a copy for any of my family and friends who express interest in reading it. It is that profound.I attended a private Catholic school from grades 1 through 8, and I then went to a private Catholic school through high school. Simply put, I learned more from this book about Exodus than I did from all those years in school. Mr. Prager is a brilliant man, who has debated at Oxford University on several occasions. He has been studying the Bible for decades, and his wealth of knowledge is evident in the book. He goes line by line through Exodus, and offers his explaination in layman’s terms. I believe what makes this book invaluable is, Mr. Prager is not trying to convert anyone to any specific religion. One does not feel that buried within his commentary is a certain degree of political correctness out of fear of offense. His only desire is to explain the book of Exodus to you. To, as the title says, explain just how rational the Bible is, when you know it in it’s full context. I have learned so much. To say that this book has strengthened my faith is a gross understatement. Simply put, I wish he would offer his insight on the entire Bible, both Old and New Testament! In closing, who can benefit from this book? Certainly any practicing Jew or Christian. Absolutely any Jew or Christian who is struggling with their faith. Any agnostic who is truly only uncertain becasuse he/she has not read anything compelling enough for him/her to say, “I can believe thatâ€. An atheist who is open to debate, and would like to hear a fair, learned man’s point of view. Finally, anyone would like to read something that can only be described as an excellent perspective on a section of a book over 2000 years and why it’s still a great, if not THE BEST, source of wisdom for human behavior.Bravo Mr. Prager. And from the bottom of my heart, thank you.Louis C.
Dennis Prager is the Paul Revere of the cultural Civil War. This book is a must read for everyone, no matter your beliefs. His main goal is to stimulate the beginning of wisdom. To quote the book, wisdom is rarely valued. A great gift for the young.
I have been waiting for this book to come out since Dennis mentioned this project years ago. He is my mentor in both politics and religion. This is truly a gift to humanity. Thank you Dennis!
As a religious observant Jew I find this book vastly expansive onto a deeper explanation from a wide variety of perspectives. Mr. Prager takes deep care to ensure the reader has proper background and knowledge into the topics which were discussed in the other books while still focusing on the text of the Bible.
I listened to all Prager's audio tapes of his 18-year course on Verse-by-Verse of the Torah. This volume on Exodus reflects on his previous teaching and also has many new thoughts. The volume is easy to use and one can choose a topic and go right to it without having to read it straight through. I can't wait for all the other volumes!
This morning I've been checking out a sample version of this out on Kindle. It's an extremely user-friendly yet thorough commentary on the book of Exodus - and, as usual, Dennis Prager doesn't disappoint. Absolutely superb from what I've read thus far. Can't wait to get the full paper volumes, especially whenever the book of Deuteronomy is released. The other day I heard Prager say that this proposed five-volume set of commentaries on the Torah (the first five books of the Old Testament) represents the work of his life - his magnum opus.
Prager is one of our best thinkers writing today. He takes deep subject matter and explains it perfectly. Highly recommended.

I did not think I would like this series. I really didn't but lets see there's the base premise of Disney princesses (I'm on book 3) combined with a full bucket of Blade Runner and sprinkled with a heavy dose of Star Wars...what's really not to like? It's very fresh and entertaining. Read it and you'll see what I'm talking about. I'm not sure how I came across this series thru Amazon. I'm 52 and though I like injections of Syfy here and there, I'm more a BBC Masterpiece theatre type of gal. I like my history series...any and all history series or period pcs.My next comment regarding The Lunar Chronicles is where can I watch this series. Where's the movie, or made for cable/TV, or Netflix, Amazon, Hulu production? Seriously producers get on this will ya and don't screw it up.
This book sat on my shelf for a few months because I wasn't entirely sure how I would react to it. The premise certainly made me curious. Cyborg Cinderella with aliens. Hmm. Either this was going to go south very quickly or it might just turn out to be worthwhile. Either way, I didn't want to get involved in a new series when I still had several unread books on my self. As it turns out, that fear was well-placed. I finished this book in three days and promptly ordered the second one. I'm even considering ordering the third one well in advance in order to avoid the two-day wait. The beginning piqued my interest, and I remember thinking that I was glad it wouldn't be a dull read. I hate picking up books with amazing covers and then finding out that the pages between said covers didn't live up to the expectations. The world-building for Cinder was solid, the writing grammatically sound and even the style and voice drew me in a little. The setting kind of unsettled me. I've never been a huge Asian-setting person, but this wasn't off-putting in any manner. It was unique and original. Somewhere along the way, this story won me over, hook, line, and sinker. I became heavily invested in the lives of the characters, and utterly obsessed with the newest plot twist. There were some things I found a tad predictable, but in a way, that didn't detract from the story either. I was more interested in the presentation of the few predictable moments and there were plenty of unpredictable events to make up for it. The story was age-appropriate, which is a huge bonus in my world. And as much as I adore fairy tale retellings, I can't get over how few references there actually are to Cinderella. I just loved that the story was its own and that it tipped its hat to Cinderella instead of mimicking it. That was something I found phenomenal. Don't get me wrong, the connections are pretty clear, but they're clever and the story doesn't hinge on them. The story isn't dependent on the connections, but it uses them to its advantage.I don't like to just dish out five-star reviews, but I think this book truly deserves it. A job very well-done. Part of me wishes I had been brave enough to read this sooner, and yet, the other part of me is selfishly glad because now I don't have to wait for the sequels to come out! I just have to order them!!! :-)
I don't even know how to rate this book. I loved it. I hated it.I was never one for fairy tales as a child, and so their retellings aren't something I gravitate to as an adult. But Cinderella is one of the few fairy tales I remember adoring. My favorite parts of Cinder were those that reminded me of the original story. I'm totally on board with a sci-fi Cinderella reboot, and I loved the idea of transforming her into a kick-ass mechanic. Cinder's stepmother, Adri, is perfection. She's cold blooded, but you can get why she resents Cinder even if you can't excuse it. I enjoyed Iko in her role as sarcastic sidekick (taking on that sort of "Gus" role from the Disney movie). The futuristic setting of New Beijing was interesting. Adding in the element of a deadly plague really intrigued me. Prince Kai? Meh. But, ok, he can be Prince Charming or whatever. What I didn't like is the introduction of moon people with mind-controlling magic. This is my own fault. I hate space. Me and Elon Musk will never hang out. I avoid stories about space travel, aliens and non-earth dwelling. But personal biases aside, I do think this book got weaker as the story progressed. Kai casually reveals things to Cinder that could be considered state secrets. Cinder has a conversation with a Lunar spy who opens up and tells her everything with very little prompting. The plot becomes increasingly predictable. When the big secret from Cinder's past is finally revealed, it isn't much of a surprise. I also would have liked to know why one of Cinder's stepsisters hated her while the other loved her. Those dynamics are never explained. The parts I liked, I loved and the parts I hated were not a dealbreaker. I didn't think I would continue with the series, but I have to admit I'm dying to know what happens with Cinder. Even if it means reading about dumb space queens.
Easily the best fairy tale retelling of Cinderella, updated to a space-and-cyborg fantasy that far exceeded my rather low expectations. Well written, eloquent and still very accessible to younger audiences. No swearing, no sex and for a change, the avoidance of strong language doesn't sound condescending. This first book of four, "Cinder" follows the adventures of a cyborg/mechanic who is treated as a less than human thing, owned by her step-mother, reviled by the step-mother and one daughter, while caring deeply for the other, Peony and her great friend, an android named Iko. There are wonderfully inventive elements from the original tale, and the book ends on a cliffhanger. In fact, the series reminds me less of a series than a single book that was broken into four pieces. It could easily have been presented that way, with minimal editing. Speaking of which, the writing and editing are exceptional, almost no spelling or grammatical errors (which drive me nuts, most particularly because editing and proofreading are so very much easier these days than they used to be). Well worth reading, and if you enjoy "Cinder", you'll almost certainly enjoy the entire series. Give it shot, it's very good!
