I love the advice in the first few pages. I even took notes. Then, I started reading some of the excerpts he included as examples of great writing.Umm... ick. I realized it's powerful writing, but it's also sad, tragic, or downright depressing. Maybe all three. Also, after the second chapter - the "seven easy steps," which are brilliantly described - this book became increasingly less useful to me.If you love stories that tug at your heartstrings because they're so sad/awful, or can overlook those kinds of emotionally charged triggers, this book may be a cover-to-cover gem. (I reached the point where the diminishing returns, in terms of advice, made the "ick" factor not worth wading through.)But, if your public library carries this - or you can pick up a copy at a low price - McDonald's "seven steps" are succinctly described and a great template for stories... even if you have every other plotting framework (hero's journey, three-act story, etc.) known to man.
There are already a ton of reviews for invisible ink and I'm going to add another. What is invisible ink? It is a book about story telling, structure, best practices really and it's extraordinary. You can read ton of reviews that will echo that thought so I'm going to instead try a different approach. Who is invisible ink for? Every body.Invisible ink goes into great detail about the aspects of story telling that usually isn't apparent, the parts that are planned and guide and build the story without necessarily actually being a part of the story. Sub text and so on. While it might be apparent from the get go what makes this useful for a writer, it might not be so apparent what makes this useful for a reader. The truth is that this is maybe the best tool for getting enjoyment out of reading I've ever read. This book has some very simple concepts that will be relayed to you in a simple manner which does not presume you have any background in writing at all. Anyone will be able to follow and understand the concepts and the way the book builds on those concepts to deliver more makes it all the more accessible. If you enjoy stories, movies, books, comics.. You should read this book because you'll get way more out of them after reading this book than you did before. One of the main concepts of this book is that stories should have a simple theme and follow them. This book is itself non-fiction, and yet it even follows that concept. The theme of having a theme is the glue that basically puts every concept together. The book will keep revisiting this theme itself and and further cement why it is important. Additionally in doing so the subject matter is easier for the reader to retain (I took notes while reading and plan to read again, but you by no means have to go through such lengths). If you've ever read a book, or watched a show and thought something was especially well done or bothered you, but couldn't quite put your finger on why, this book makes it clear. As far as flow this book though non fiction really feels like a page turner. Through use of example and relating it back to stories you're familiar with, the lessons flow from the pages not like a lecture, but rather like you are actually watching an entertaining movie itself. Never a time did I find the material dry or especially difficult to trudge through. Finishing this book is something you could do quickly or savor it and re-reading potential, in order to retain more is quite high.I do have one complaint and the author knew this would happen as he addresses it in the book. There is a time when he uses a gender tag for a concept that I personally wonder if it was a necessary way to describe the concept. He insists it is and spends a bit of time defending it in his work, but it felt a tiny bit like a distraction to me. I know some readers have found that section to be too much and stopped reading, but I personally think they missed out. It's a minuscule nitpick and for such an accomplished writer whose book is so extraordinary, I think we should forgive that section even if we don't entirely agree with it. I personally thought the content was spot on, just the labeling bothered me a tad. Small price to pay for this masterpiece book and I for one defer to the author's wisdom. So in conclusion, who is this book for? Everyone. There is no one who could not benefit from the knowledge contained and it even reads a little like a fun little fiction. If you don't read this book you are seriously missing out.
I had gotten this thanks to a book recommendation from the Paper Wings Podcast. I had heard that Brian McDonald taught story workshops at Pixar and LucasFilms, so I was anxious to read his book and see if it could be useful. And I found it was MORE than useful. It's practically my Bible now.If you don't know how to write stories, read this book. If you THINK you know how to write stories, read this book."Invisible Ink" talks about the essentials of storytelling and that's it. There's no extra fluff like in other books. This book will help you solve many sticky issues about writing in the simplest manner. Problems from how to structure a plot to how to handle your characters to what you should make the story about.I HEAVILY recommend this to anyone who wants to make a career with stories: whether it's comics, writing, screenplays, or whatever. This book is most likely the only book you'll need.
I think the first question that pops into someone's mind when he sees this book is: what does "Invisible Ink" even mean?It means the storytelling craft that has nothing to do with stringing words together and everything to do with dramatization -- with conveying an emotional understanding of an intellectual idea or theme. Invisible Ink is one of the very best books I've come across at conveying this.Invisible Ink is an incredibly insightful book, but more than that, it is breathtakingly concise and clear. In fact, the one negative review you'll likely find on this book mostly dings it because it is such a slim work. Frankly, that reviewer is... well, I won't call him an idiot, but I think he'll do nicely until a real idiot comes along. The kind of clarity and concision on display is breathtakingly hard to achieve and only comes after years, if not decades of pondering, working with, and internalizing ideas and concepts. And lucky you gets to come along and pluck all that insight and wisdom through the course of an evening of easy reading. But only if you buy the book...

I probably read this book to my kid three times a day. Not by choice...she throws it into my lap, makes a bird noise (quack, hoot, tweet), and forces me to read it. Shes an 18 month old dictator. If she wants the bird book, we must read the bird book. I give this 5 star review in her honor.
We love the Mrs. Peanuckle books! I can’t wait to buy them all. The fun facts for each bird make it interesting even for me to read. My 2 year old has me read the Mrs. Peanuckle books to her several times a day, so I’d definitely recommend them for your child’s library.
My kids love these books, so educational and the illustrations are so cute!
Good book
We have the entire series. Our daughters favorite books.
I love this book and have purchased multiple copies for gifts. Children may begin to learn bird names at an early age.
I am so impressed by this book! Super adorable!! I'm a bird lover and would highly reccomend getting it!

Review
"The most exciting and scholarly exposition of the theory of extraterrestrial intervention yet written." (John Michell, author of Secrets of the Stones and A Traveler's Key to Sacred England)"The Sirius Mystery argues with some sophistication the likelihood that superior beings from Sirius visited earth between 7,000 and 10,000 years ago. . . . Temple unleashes a torrent of arcane information . . . a swirl of genuine astronomical mysteries, anthropological dates, and the tricky cross-currents of comparative mythology." (Time Magazine)"A fascinating book because the nugget of mystery Temple has mined and polished is from a pure vein. . . . The Sirius Mystery should be taken seriously." (Nature Magazine)"Von Daniken and Velikovsky followers should have a good time with this book, which is buttressed by some impressive looking scholarly apparatus." (Publishers Weekly)"Before dismissing Mr. Temple's theme as fantasy or science fiction one should read his well-documented book and examine his case without prejudice." (Oxford Mail)"The mind not only bends but warps." (Kirkus)"The mind boggles....Robert Temple is cautious. He has intellectual integrity...(his) massive research into the ancient mythologies of numerous civilizations and cultures one can only regard with awe." (Sunday Times (London))

A pretty serious and interesting book by Robert Temple, requiring sharp attention and careful scholarly consideration. There is so little that we really can claim to know about our own history as humans and this book is just another representation of the scope of how "little" that little really is. Of course, for staunch Darwinists these ideas may be no more than fiction, mythology, but upon deeper reading we have to understand that mythology on some level is more factual than the facts concocted by the scientists. After all, comparing to a human life, the age of a myth is much much longer. On this point I am bound to believe that we have never developed gradually from the one-celled organisms, then amphibians and finally primates. There are way too many glitches in that (still) theory. First of all - why there is no evidence of any primates becoming human in the last several thousands years of recorded history? Second, where are all the connecting links between the fish and the humans. I would expect a much higher diversity of different variations of fish-humans being still present and functioning as part of our current biosphere. Third, why haven't we seen any humans evolving into the super-humans, whatever that may mean. Obviously we are not the apex of evolution, in fact considering what we are doing - we are much worse than the dung-rolling beetles. At least they get rid of the excrement. So with this disregard for the theory of evolution, I have to conclude that if we became, at least physiologically what we are today, that must have been a rather fast, laboratory like process. Indeed, looking at the great complexity and the great variety of creation it is hard not to conclude that this was all created by the Creators too sophisticated to understand. I think this book is a great step on the way to connecting with ourselves, and our true ancestors no matter how far away they may seem.
How does a Stone Age, West African tribe know minute details about a STAR, invisible to the naked eye, orbiting in a binary system with the visible star Sirius? Furthermore; How do they know about a THIRD star in the system that wasn't known to astronomers until recently and, then, only with with the use of powerful X-ray and Optical telescopes? More baffling; how do the Dogon know PRECICELY the orbital times and ratios of these Stars and their utterly astonishing relationship with the planet EARTH? Robert Temple leads an exciting investigation into ancient knowledge given to the Dogon and handed down for centuries (according to their religion, art and tribal history); Information, of staggering proportions, that correlates exactly with what science has learned in the past 100 years. The question is: not whether this knowledge was given to the Dogon... but given by whom? Robert Temple's work is backed with years of (footnoted) research and a dedication to stick to the facts and not allow himself to fly-off into speculation, about Visitors coming to Earth, just to boost sales in the "New-Age" market. In fact, in my opinion, Robert Temple's work, presented in this present, updated edition, reveals a history with stunning implications and an opportunity for the Human Race to "Know Thyself" as never before. Read the evidence and judge for yourself if Earth was visited by Alien Contact 5,000 years ago? Many are frightened (by evidence of their 'tags') but only open minds have ever revealed history shaking events, nor ever will.
Some of the more critical reviews of this book have stated that the information in it is not really new. The point is that The Sirius Mystery was originally published in 1976, over 30 years ago. It was new then. In fact, the book caused quite a stir, especially in Europe, where Temple's explanation of the cosmology of the Dogon tribe was well received. At the time the Sirius Mystery came out, I was deeply into the tabloidish Erich Von Daniken and I found Temple's writing too intellectual, too scholarly for my liking...so I merely skimmed over it. Since those heady days, and having read just about everything else I could get hold of, I have long since drifted away from the alien astronaut thesis. So re-reading the Sirius mystery now leaves me a little flat.I would caution readers that the writing style is a little difficult, but there are some real gems inside, so it is definitely worth persevering. Certainly, none of Temple's critics have been able to discredit his research or refute his conclusions. I give it only 3 stars because his conclusions are too forced to sit comfortably with my own sense of logic.
A greatly detailed book why the author thinks Aliens came here, and their connection with Egypt and the Dogon Tribe of Africa. Why the Dogon's celebrate the passing of Digitara, their home planet around Sirius, every 64 years.Very interesting.
Strangely, after reading this many oddities and things I'd seen many times seemed to fit well into this mystery. Can get rather tedious to read, but it is very interesting.
It's a great revelation concerning the advanced knowledge of the Dogon and a link up to other theories about the Annunaki. The book belabors the point a bit, especially concerning Jason and the Argonauts, and the dragon's teeth. It drags a bit but the information is still very interesting.
This book is chuck full of amazing information and should be widely read. Another volume is the "ancient alien" series, but much better than most. A great addition to anyone who is interested in alternative history library. 5 Stars

#64,445 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)
Semi-true story of a teenager who gets addicted to meth, written in poetry by her mother. Beautifully written, but it loses steam near the end and sort of fizzles out. There are two more books in the series, so I suppose this wasn't meant to be the true ending. Still, the momentum just bottomed out at the end, almost as if the writer gave up or was short on time and had to just toss something together, or was just too darn tired to keep up the fiction any longer. As she says in the afterword, her daughter was incarcerated in prison by the time this first book was written, so I think the mother/author just wanted to be done with it and move on by then. I can't really say more without discussing the specific plot line and ruining it for you.
I remember all my friends reading these books in high school, but I didn't want to. I didn't care for the content or style....and I'm glad I didn't read it then. I don't think I would have appreciated the story as much at 14 or 15 as I do now. I had to force myself to put it down to do other things.
Every have a book that you really enjoyed but had a hard time figuring out why? Glass was like that for me at first. As I continued to read, I kept rolling my eyes at the main character Kristina as she continues to destroy her life. I despise her mother and step father for being in denial as long as they were. I do not care for her friends when they can just abandon her as quickly as change their shirt. What makes the story even more tragic is how she gives up her own baby for the meth. You would think that would motivate her to do better and be better. If anything, she uses the baby as an excuse. The meth helps her lose the baby fat because she does not eat, and it helps her escape the stress of being a mother. So why do I like this story so much if I find the characters so despicable? Well, first off it is a very compelling story. I am willing to admit that I started to feel sorry for Kristina as her world came crashing down. She lost ties with all her family because of her own choices but when I saw how it was affecting her I still hoped for something good to happen, but it never did. What really enthralls me is Hopkins' style. I love reading this story in prose. She even gets more creative in this one by meshing up her prose into different shapes reflecting the situation she is telling. These books are deceptively short yet a lot more happens than most stories. I would definitely recommend continuing this series if you enjoyed Crank. It is a terrifying yet awe-inspiring tale of what continues to happen with meth addicts and the continuing dangers of addiction. If Crank and Glass do not give you pause about drug use, nothing will.
This is by far one of my favorite authors, and this book doesn't disappoint! I read this book in one sitting, that's how good it is... I love how she chose to write this series in free verse. I was a little skeptical at first thinking that it wouldn't flow very well as a story because of this choice but boy was I ever wrong! This story will catch your attention from the very first page and reel you in.
I can't get enough of this author and this series. It's an easy read that holds your attention until the very end. Although fiction, many of the obstacles the characters face are very real for teenagers in today's society. If you are looking for a book that makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside, this is not it.
I have had this book in my wish list for a while and on a whim I decided to get it. It did not disappoint. It continued the story started in Ellen Hopkins' Crank. I really enjoy her style of writing, not only form but shape as well. Just about every page has words in some wacky arrangement, and in some pages you will find a "hidden" passage. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone, although I would advise you to read Crank first and keep Urban Dictionary handy if you are unfamiliar with terms related to drugs, specifically meth (I lived a very sheltered life so I was looking up words from the book quite frequently.)Conclusion: Loved the book, same style and characters from the first book, Crank, had to look up some words b/c I'm not familiar with slang words for drugs.
Amazing. Ellen Hopkins brings it again with another great story. Glass has so many scenes where you just want to reach out to the main character and help her realize she's heading in the wrong direction. Sad, frightening, eye opening. It's interesting to see a good kid go bad real quick. I think this helped me be much more patient with the teens im surrounded with and try to help. Being a non drug user, I often though people basically had a bad life and went the wrong way but its eye opening to see a good kid with a seemingly good life go bad real quick. Sad. Great book. Enjoyed the read.
Crank is always a classic. It’s true, raw, hard, painful- and tries to make sense of the concept of drug addiction. Will read again and again and recommend to everyone

Very inspiring. Some of the challenges Diana Nyad went through to achieve her dream were unbelievable! What a warrior woman. From her childhood, where sexual abuse turned her into an overachiever, to her mid-sixties, where she has one more chance to achieve her lifelong dream, Nyad inspires, yet she's very human. She is introspective, suffers emotionally, wonders about herself, but in the end, gets on with it.This is a story not just of super-human athletic accomplishment, but also of rebirth at an age when conventional culture writes you off. For example, Nyad reflects on how she feels in her sixties as opposed to forty years earlier: "I'm not as sensitive or delicate emotionally, either, so I suppose the mental calm and perspective that comes with age contributes to being more robust in this new incarnation of my athletic self...In my sixties, I am far more patient, with myself and my crew..."Nyad also talks about the fact that she is atheistic, disliking the slogan, "It was meant to be." She says, "I learned through my own life's journey that one makes oneself a champion...(if 'it was meant to be'), then where is hope? Where does will come in? Where is the inspiration to change and better oneself?" I enjoyed her story, and felt inspired and motivated after reading it.
Diana Nyad holds an inexplicable power to push herself beyond personal limits. Whether that was created from innate personal strength or forged from unfortunate personal circumstances, we get to share a bit of what it’s like to live a willful life on the edge. There is a life lesson here for all of us.I guess I’ve always wondered what drives people to do the impossible. For many like me, Diana’s stories have been heard over the years in short but stunning news blurbs, like swimming around Manhattan or across the English Channel. Diana was always a pioneer in these feats not to mention how she elevated the capability of women each time she broke a new record. These records get broken. But, what remains each time for all of us to ponder is the question “What are our limits?â€The book is a well-written riveting autobiography told around her ultimate personal challenge - completing a 110 mile swim from Cuba to Florida. The bizarre conditions of the sport of open water ocean swimming allows only to provide and protect, but not assist her swim or float in any way, She is adrift for over two days surrounded by a flotilla of boats and staff that can only help guide, manage and protect her. What is perhaps as remarkable as breaking the record was that she accomplished what many thought impossible on her fifth attempt at the age of 64. In the sport of open ocean swimming Cuba to Florida was the “Everest†to be conquered. It required peak physical and mental conditioning even in her 60’s and a blessing of fortunate natural conditions like warm temperatures, and favorable winds and currents. Sharks could be scared away but swarms of deadly box jellyfish were unpredictable and impossible to avoid. Through many painful experiences and many failed attempts she was able to “Find a Way†to overcome even these obstacles. The book made me wonder whether it’s the thoughts the person holds dearly or the challenge itself that leverages our capability to go beyond the ordinary. What do we gain by trying and failing and trying again? Certainly, it all starts with a dream and ends with our ability to fight off our demons and believe in ourselves. Diana Nyad’s story is an inspiration to anyone who harbors an impossible dream.
I knew nothing about the author until I discovered and joined her Everwalk Nation initiative last year.I am a walker and recreational /commuter cyclist who does not drive a car.I am a writer/blogger and photographer who has written quite a bit about gratitude and never giving up so I recently bit the bullet and bought this book.Let me get something out of the way, immediately...There are some people who may be turned off by the sexual orientation and political views of the author...if you let that be the deciding factor in whether you purchase and read the book, or join her walking initiative, then it is your loss and a huge mistake. This is a memoir sharing the life of someone as she experienced it, and those events, the good and the bad and how they shaped the adult she eventually became, are a part of the story she tells, but only a small part.Yes, you learn she's gay and you can't help but wonder how the bad in her early years led to this, but it is her life and she moves on from the admission of her orientation and only lightly touches on the loves of her life afterward. Her life as a swimmer, broadcaster and author and her repeated efforts at the Cuba Swim, until eventual success, is the major focus of this book and rightly so.With the help and support of all the many people in her life, gay and straight, she "found a way" to overcome many challenges in her life and succeed. What she went thru, the difficulties faced and how she overcame them as she finally succeeded on the swim make for interesting, gripping, reading. Her message about never giving up and finding a way will resonate with anyone struggling to succeed at something in their life.If you are a walker don't let the long distance walks of Everwalk Nation keep you from joining...You will find like-minded people and support and encouragement even if you only do walks of a couple miles to a dozen or so.

This is the final novel in the Way of the Shaman series. According to the author and the company that publishes them in english, there will be more stories set in Barliona, but that will come after the author finishes some other projects. This novel however, is a rollercoaster ride of plot twists and story development. To me, book 6 in the series capped off the series wonderfully with a happily ever after kind of ending. Sure, there were some unfinished story threads but overall it was a good ending. It was a lot like the scripted ending of a favorite RPG game.Book 7 is the downloadable DLC that changes that ending and gives you one last crazy adventure with the characters you love. There are so many new big quests, revelations, Mahan finally uses that spider eye he got in book 1, and more that an invasion from a rival continent is the smallest event in the story.Overall, I had a good time with the story. There’s some not entirely justifiable twists both in game and IRL but it’s an interesting last ride with my favorite shaman.Score: 7 out of 10
Good author, but this book not as good as 1-6. Too disjointed, too many plot reversals unsupported by story. Entire plot was shifted 180 degrees at the end by 3 pages of exposition from some character you never met before, explaining what all had reallllly happened, all behind the scenes that you never read anything about in the story. Then 5 pages later, another complete reversal is laid down by some more narrative exposition. I like the author and want to support him writing more, but he needs to stop with so many plots, and trying to have a big reversal reveal at the end... just tell a good simpler story about characters, which he is good at.
A good book. Mahan is a lot less idealistic in this book, after having been freed from his enforced immersion. After having the Creators Tomb manoeuvred away from him by Ehkiller from Phoenix, Mahan, Plinto and Anastaria become involved with the Shadow Empire. Mix this in amongst a major tournament where Plinto and Mahan are enrolled in the PVP, 2 on 2 bouts. All of this occurs naturally after a new Update to Barliona, and Mahan must relearn his old Shaman skills, deal with NPC’s that he knows having suffered permanent death, and being involved in the biggest quest there is. Oh, and to top it off, they become enemy number 1, 2, & 3, for the entire world of Barliona, other continents included.Unfortunately the book ends a bit abruptly, leaving us with the knowledge that there are more books in the series yet to be translated to English.
I love this series and I love the characters that are so interesting and unique. This book is much like the last 6 (or 7 the hour of pain anyone?). This book will not be for everyone as much of it is new set ups and quests rather than the completion of old stuff with some unique twists. The ending was exceedingly unexpected. I liked the book but the previous was probably a more satisfying end for most people. If you were unsatisfied with the ending of the previous book this book will be for you.
My only complaint is that there are just too many twists and turns, it begins to become implausible even in this already not too beleivable world he's created. I'd rather the next book get a little more back to the basics. When was the last time Mahan crafted anything? Certainly not in this book. Also if you read this Mr Mahanenko, could you please finish Start the game.
*Bangs head against the wall for a minute...or two* WOW...ok where to begin so many twists and plots within schemes within intrigues. Fun book 2 days and a sleepless night but it was WORTH every moment. Loved the book ready for 8...keep writing and I’ll keep reading!!!
fan of the series in general, but I thought It started going down hill after the betrayal. This is by far the worst of the series and gas a couple continuity errors with book 6. Also it stops being a believable story, I was such a fan of the first couple books, didn t mind the middle, and didn t mind reading this becuase I'm committed, but this was a bad poorly crafted book that gets farther and farther from the believable story from which it began
I sincereY thought the last would be just that! The last one so imagine my surprise that this book comes out and shows that the game!e has just begun. A fantastic tale of treachery and breaking the game
