I played soccer. I coached soccer at the youth rec levels for 16 seasons. I've been an avid fan of soccer for over 48 years and have attended professional matches on 4 continents. I've purchased probably 20-25 books on coaching soccer technique and half a dozen DVD's or videos on soccer coaching in addition to holding various USSF coaching licenses.This is the BEST book I've seen on an intro to coaching soccer for someone who is relatively new to the sport. If you're a parent who's been dragooned into assisting or coaching your kid's youth team, this book plus the USSF website resources for youth coaches are the best info you can get your hands on. Clark has an outstanding reputation as a coach (Stanford and Notre Dame in the US, National team programs in a couple of countries, played for Sir Alex Ferguson at Aberdeen in the Scottish League). So he knows his stuff. But more importantly, he knows how to coach kids and more important still, he knows what to say to a parent who didn't grow up playing soccer seriously and/or has never coached soccer. Just because you coached Little League Baseball or played basketball through middle and high school doesn't mean you're prepared to coach a youth soccer team. Lots of great tips on organizing practices, what skills to emphasize, how to teach those skills, how to deal with youngsters with various levels of motivation. I can't think of a better intro resource for a new coach or someone relatively new to the sport. GET THIS BOOK-- you won't regret it.
Long ago I was asked to be a assistant (based on playing ability). I quickly learned learned than knowing how to play is a small part of coaching. When my kids started playing, I did not volunteer because I realized that I was not particularly good at it, based on one year's experience as an assistant. However, after observing my oldest son's coach, I decided that I could do a better job. I had a couple of soccer book that were useful, but I really liked "The Baffled Parent's Guide to Coaching Youth" when it came out, which was a few years after I started coaching. It covers not only basic activities, but includes other coaching aspects. (See the Table of Contents for examples.) I recommended that our soccer association give a copy to every new volunteer. Our state required new coaches to attended a 2-3 hour introductory coaching course, but many did not attend and it was not really on option to disband a team because the coach did not attend. Hopefully having this book helped.
I am not myself a soccer player, and am now coaching U8, having coached since U5. As the kids get more proficient and the game rules get more stringent, I have struggled a bit to keep ahead of the kids. This book is extremely useful in clarifying basic skills and rules and providing a wealth of practice activities that challenge kids at a range of skill levels. I often modify the practice routines to match my particular players, but this book has been a great resource. I've even discovered a few things that I have been teaching inaccurately (like how to dribble!), and I have been able to retool.I got it used used at a great price, and it was well worth the $4 I paid.
My first time coaching soccer and this book has been a life-saver. The boys love the fun, game-type drills. I love the organization and ease of the book.(BTW—I've got 4th grade boys, 9-10yo, in a rec league; not your most talented or driven bunch, but a lot of fun.)
It has plenty of drills and explanations. It is well written and has some sample plans for practices. It is geared towards the first time coach without much experience. I got it for spring coaching AYSO after coaching in the fall. I used several of the games but most of it were things I'd already learned. It is missing general strategy for games and how to put things all together (team strategy, progressing from basic skills to intermediate skills). Overall, it's a good (though somewhat sparse) reference for inexperienced coaches.
This book took me from being a total non-athlete, knowing nearly nothing about soccer and never having coached anything before, to being a coach with a plan. I am coaching my son's U8 soccer team, and even with this book it has been a challenge, but without the book, I would have been completely lost. Here's what the book did for me:(1) it taught me the rules of soccer. I did have a bit of trouble understanding the offside rule as stated in the book, so I had to ask a friend to clarify for me.(2) it taught me the most fundamental soccer skills: dribbling, passing, shooting.(3) it gave me sample practices and a general structure to use as templates for my own practices, and it gave me plenty of games and drills to choose from to fill them.(4) it told me what to do on game day.(5) it prepared me for the psychology of my wild and crazy boys. This is key. I am a female "intellectual type" who has never really played or enjoyed watching sports (and has never worked with this age group), so the whole mindset was completely foreign to me. It prepared me for the facts that they would listen to only the briefest of instructions, that they needed to be moving at almost all times, that for them no drill or game would be as exciting as JUST SOCCER, in its pure form.So why four stars? There's one thing that could really improve this book, and that is some kind of guide, for all the games and drills in the book, that would rate the maturity level and skill level needed for each one. Maybe also a minimum child-to-adult ratio required to run it successfully. (Unfortunately ours is 10 to 1.) As a U8 coach in a relatively casual city recreation league, I am at the very bottom end of the intended audience for this book. And because of my inexperience, it is very difficult for me to tell which of the drills are appropriate for my team, until I get onto the field with them to try it. By then it's too late, and the failed drill can make it hard to re-engage the kids for the next activity. For this reason I plan to order the guide for 6-and-under soccer even though my kids are over six. I need some tried-and-true tricks for engaging the youngest players when things aren't going the way I planned.Overall I am very grateful for this book and what it has done for our team.

The exam questions are drawn from a pool of over 350 prospective questions in the following areas:T1 FCC RulesT2 Operating ProceduresT3 Radio Wave Characteristics and PropogationT4 Amateur Radio PracticesT5 Electrical PrinciplesT6 Electical components, semiconductors, circuit diagrams, component functionsT7 Station equipmentT8 Modulation modes, amateur satellite operations, operating activities, non-voice communicationsT9 Antennas and feedlinesT0 SafetyA technical whiz can breeze through T5 and T6--but other sections deal with law (T1) and common operating practices (T2)--details that cannot be deduced from fundamental principles...so virtually everyone is going to need to bone up on some of the material to successfully pass the exam.This book is terrific. If you're unsure if you should buy the Gordon West or AARL ham radio license books, here is my take:* Gordon West's book: Gordo's book was the ONLY thing I needed to pass the test. He gives you just the information you need to answer each question on the test, but the book is rather small and provides very little in-depth explanation. Gordo's book also provides an audio CD that is fun to listen to in the car. You can actually hear communications of all sorts, on many bands, and Gordo explains exactly what it's all about. You certainly don't need this to pass the test, but it's fun and interesting to listen to.* ARRL License Manual: The ARRL book is much larger than Gordo's book and provides significantly more information. It will of course teach you everything you need to know to easily pass the test, but also gives you a lot more in-depth (and very interesting) information. I read this book *after* having passed the test using Gordo's book. The AARL book also includes a computer CD which includes practice tests.* SUMMARY: BOTH books are excellent. Which one you buy is really a matter of how much you want to learn about ham radio. Buy Gordo's book if you just want to pass the test, or buy the ARRL book if you really want to understand a lot about the hobby and pass the test *easily.*
This book contains all the information needed to pass the test. I read the text portion twice over a couple of months. I got through about 70% of the questions in the last half before taking the test. I barely passed, but that was good enough to get the license. The book has two parts, half of it is the information about Ham Radio, the second half is the question bank with the answers so you can study. The questions in the book are the exact same questions that are on the test, as long as you buy the current years book. I think the questions are being updated this year, so make sure you get the most current version and don't wait too long before you take the test.
This book is considered a classic. I didn't find it's format conducive to learning the subject, but the question and answers in the back of the book will get you through. Gordon West also produces a book for the same purpose which is a totally different approach to learning. I have the same comments about his publication. He uses a lot of anachronistic slang which sometimes escapes me and therefore the point of the lesson is lost. So, the best approach is to use both or just buy yourself a really complete book on Amateur Radios and start reading page by page. Talk to your friends at your HAM club for clarifications. I am currently a General Class License holder, but feel there is a part of my education that is lacking.
For many years I considered getting a Ham radio license, but the lesson books I bought were too boring and had way too many pages. Now that Morse Code is no longer required, the exam is far more relevant to amateur radio and the equipment sold today. It explains procedures, regulations, basic electronics and types of equipment. The accompanying CD has the pool of the actual questions that will be on your exam in a series of practice tests. The nine chapters were easily completed studying an hour or so per night over a two week period. I know it worked well because, with no background, I passed with 100% on the first try. Now I need to get a radio and get on the air!

I was completely impressed by Power Position Your Agency. It is tough to find a book about how to become a successful insurance agent but this is a wonderful starting point. This gives you a better understanding of what it takes to be a very successful agent. This is only one path but it is a path that led to the authors success and gives people either new ideas or wonderful starting points to build a solid and successful insurance agency. If you want to find something insurance specific, this is the book.
This a pretty good book and has been supported / promoted by key people in large insurance companies.If you work for an insurance agent or are one, I recommend this.Although dated, the fundamentals are sound.Pair it up with a book like 'Eat that Frog' Brian Tracey or '12 Week Year' to really make your system hum.Alright, now back to the phones.
I like this book and I feel like Troy tells the truth about how a lot of agents work by themselves and peddle policies without really growing. Troy really does well with his customer service and staff. This is something a lot of agents can learn from. The one down fall I see with his system is relying on the annual review to make most of the new sales. Obviously it works for Troy, but I think this is just one of the parts to a successful agency! I definitely recommend this book to agents that are new to the business and asking if staff members are worth the price of payroll!

Book was a good read, but ... production of book itself (the small type-style compared to the available page size) was below the level I would expect from a book, even a paperback book selling at this price. The content was still worth it, but thought the production values could have made it better!

I first read "Tree" when I was 11. It has stuck with me all these years. I have re-read it multiple times, gaining new insights every time, depending on MY developmental stage. At almost 75, I expect if I am lucky, I will be able to read it several more times. This biography by Yow, was fascinating when I read it when it first came out. At that time, I wanted to get all Smith's other books and reread them as well but they were still hidden from view. I thought that was really silly because I remember they were excellent too and I wanted to follow those stories again with the insight of the biography. I see they have since been republished. Bet that is due to Professor Vow's excellent biography. I have ordered them all and will happily take them to Lake Michigan with me this summer to have a Betty Smith immersion.
Very well written, readable and enjoyable biography of American novelist Betty Smith. This told me just about everything I wanted to know about the author of "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn." I find the biographies of authors to be invaluable. I'd recommend this to any aspiring author, and of course to any fan of "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" who wants some context for the genesis of the novel, or any person who is simply interested in the story of the woman behind an American classic.

I enjoy Betty Smith's books. This biography provided with greater understanding of how, when, where she wrote her books. Now if someone would just publish a book on her other writings-plays, articles, etc. And if they would reissue "Tomorrow will be better".

Adam D. Ruppe Adam D. Ruppe is a professional software developer living in Watertown, New York. He started programming PCs in high school, writing assembly language, and later C and C++, using the Digital Mars compiler to build programs based on MS DOS on a handmedown computer. Programming in the DOS environment with the slow computer gave him early practical experience in lowlevel and efficient code—skills he carries on developing today. After finishing school, he started doing web programming—initially with PHP. While he'd make it work, he often found himself longing for the good old days. One day, he decided to check back with the vendor of his old compiler and discovered the D programming language (well before it reached 1.0!). He was enamored with it and used it to write some games, and then started writing web libraries to use it for work too, to replace PHP. He found success in this endeavor in early 2009. Combining his pioneering spirit with his blend of lowlevel and highlevel programming experience, he was able to forge ahead with D, taking it to places many people didn't believe possible

Adam Ruppe's "D cookbook" introduces the reader to programming in D in the form of recipes. In each recipe Adam Ruppe solves a specific programming problem with the D programming language. The author focuses on getting things done by letting the reader witness the author's approach in each recipe.The book covers a plenitude of recipes -- from essential subjects like ranges, tasks, and Phobos (D's standard library) to advanced topics like manual memory management, reflection and compile time code generation using templates, CTFE, and mixins and running D on bare x86 and ARM metal. Some recipes feature solutions devised by the D community that the reader can dig into by following the given pointers.Most notably, this book shows "idiomatic" coding in D.Although the book starts with recipes on installing a D compiler and writing Hello World it becomes fairly technical and advanced. From my perspective the book is most useful to D programmers and ambitious newcomers to the language. To me, the book is sometimes a tad too ad hoc and focused on a solution than to teach principles and concepts of the D language/library. Providing more background in these few recipes and more guidance to see the big picture justifying a taken approach may aid the reading experience. When reading the many different loosely connected recipes cover to cover I sometimes felt lost which maybe is not unusual for an encyclopedic kind of book. In some recipes the book gives its reader a feel for some rough edges of the languages and its implementation including Phobos but never to bash, always to advance. The last chapter features Adam Ruppe's libraries for web and GUI programming which I found less convincing because most is hidden inside these libraries and so the access is less direct. The book is exceptional strong when the author develops his solutions choosing wisely from the language's offerings.A must read for any D programmer to see what the language is up to and to draw on Adam Ruppe's experience with D - covering many idioms in condensed form that alone are difficult to find on the Internet.
As a beginning D coder I found this book to be great for getting up to speed on more advanced, practical D techniques. The style makes it pleasant to just read through, but, true to its name, its an encyclopedic resource for when I need to remember the finer details of more common tasks like building custom ranges. or venture into murky territory like C++ interop. As another reviewer pointed out, Adam presents the idiomatic way of doing things, which is invaluable with a language that presents you with such an overwhelming mass of tools and possibilities as D does. If you write in D, this book really needs to be in your library.
"The D Cookbook" by Adam Ruppe is one of the most diverse technical books I've read. It manages to range all the way from the classic "Hello, world" example, all the way up to stripping the Runtime bare and running it on an OS-less board, all the while managing to fully explain (almost) everything in a way that a beginner could understand.The book is formatted in such a way that each chapter is a group of related "recipes." Each recipe explains a concept by starting with a general summary, and a code sample, and ends it up with a *very* detailed explanation of how everything works. These descriptions also often include some very helpful tangential tips about how to be better D programmer in general, which can be very helpful. It's amazing how simply Ruppe can explain how and why you should do relatively advanced things like accessing and parsing exception-less stack traces.The only thing I don't like about the recipes is that sometimes the "How it works" section can be a bit long-winded. The descriptions can often span multiple pages, often reiterating lots of information. It isn't necessarily a bad thing, but be prepared to skim a lot of the book if you already know a fair amount about D programming.Overall, I think that "The D Cookbook" is an excellent read, and should be considered required reading for anyone serious about coding with D. This book is a collection of well-crafted "recipes", each aiming at some realistic software engineering problem, and each blending just enough pragmatism, theory and hard-won programming experience to make a novice D user (such as myself) appreciate the sheer power and elegance of this language and learn more about it.While going through the recipes comprising this cookbook (and there is a lot to go through) it was hard to avoid developing an ever-growing sense of appreciation and respect for the author Adam D. Ruppe's level of expertise, eloquence and clarity of thought.I highly recommend this book. As a software practitioner, I felt both enlightened and empowered after I read it.
Mr Ruppe has written a pleasantly unusual cookbook, a cookbook with a narrative. The book is no mere collection of recipes but a journey of a passionate D hacker. The topics are well chosen and nicely structured, the recipes are short and to the point. The reader is expected to know about programming in general and be somewhat familiar with D syntax. The book is not comprehensive in any way and does not try to be, there is Alexandrescu's book for that. Instead, Mr Ruppe shows the reader how D can be used.The book suffers from a simplistic layout and some sloppy copy editing in the first chapter, however, these are minor points that do not affect its technical value nor its charm. The book (and the language) will be worth your time, if you liked what C++ used to be. Think Scott Meyers for D, a little less professional, a little more personal and a whole lot less incidental complexity.
