Together, they find everything that was missing from their lonely existence.I loved the chemistry between Jeremy and Deidre, it is electric and magnetic. I loved their banter.You immediately are taken in to this story, it is completely captivating. You root for both of these characters with a fierceness as though you personally know them. The story moved and flowed effortlessly, with a clear beginning, middle and end.If you are a fan of Ms. Brent, this is one story to not be missed. I hope we get to revisit these characters in the future!

I truly enjoyed this quick read of 2 souls that have suffered the pain of loss and in turn lost themselves. And together they find themselves and learn to work past their pain to move on and learn how to love again, love themselves, and Love one another.
Wasn't expecting this book so what a treat! Loved the way the scenery was so descriptive I could picture it easily. The story was steamy hot and mushy at the same time. Great read!

This Author never fails to draw me in with her words and makes me feel for her characters with every story she writes.Jeremy the one time superstar retreats to a small town in the mountains where no-one bothers him, he likes the solitude of being alone, a Hermit with no connection to his former life.Deirdre decides she wants to escape from her life too, leaving her family behind and severing all ties.I loved how Deirdre and Jeremy met, the way he spoke to her. It made me chuckle at how just out of practice he was.You can't help but feel for both of them, they're two broken people that carry a lot of pain around.They aren't looking for each other but circumstances bond them together.Sometimes the best things happen when you least expect them.A fantastic standalone story from the Cards of Love collection.
Tragedy, Love lost, Heartbreak and love all rolled into one great read!Jeremy was at the topOf his game with Boxing, he was a champion with his whole life and career ahead of him until everything changed in one life altering moment.Jeremy decides to turn his back on life as he knows it, walk away and forget. He moves to the desert, a small desolate town where no one bothers him, basically he checked out of life.Dee moves to the same desert town for research purposes and when she gets herself lost and ends up on Jeremy’s doorstep she awakens something in Jeremy he though was gone forever.This was another amazing read by Cora that kept me fully engaged. I loved to see Dee and Jeremy’s feelings develop from friends to love. They both overcame tragedy by discovering each other.

They took out fluff and put their own version of fluff in it.The book is barely organized by topic and does not really flow coherently. Some of the overly simplified statements are making me cringe.Barely any formulas are written to show relationships between variables. I’m trying to brush up on physics but it’s so poorly presented I will probably resort to another resource.A hint to the publisher: use headings. Align competencies to those given in the FTCE resources (yes, I mean add some numbers so we’re not constantly flipping pages and checking our test guide), don’t be afraid of diagrams/pictures/equations because they really do help people learn, and give a diagnostic test.What a waste.
Overall, I am very thankful for this book! I was out-of-country for the 2 weeks before my exam, so I was limited to studying printed text or text saved to my Kindle. Much of the exam was reviewed in this book. I used it like I would in college - read it and took topical notes. Then I studied the notes constantly. I am not crazy about the format and I think most people won't be, but the content is good.
I ordered this for my daughter and had it shipped to her. It arrived on time and is exactly as described. She didn't pass the test, but I can't say if that is because the book isn't up to date, or because she didn't study enough. They do change the tests frequently. She said it was a helpful study aid.
Buy this before you take the exam! Reviewed all of the major concepts. Passed the first time. Definitely worth the money.
I wasn't too excited about this study guide. Instead of chunking the information into reasonable pieces, they give pages and pages of text in small font. Not at all what I was expecting for the price or the reviews. It was good information given, it was just presented poorly and in an overwhelming manner.
No science background, but I passed the exam first time after using this book alone to study.
I am confident that a rating of 5/5 would reflect this product's ability to prepare an individual to take this challenging test. I love the organization of the study materials and the design of the practice questions. The practice questions look identical to those you can anticipate on the real test!

When I first heard about this book while the author was on his book tour, he was described as this kid who'd been unable to find a job as a journalist who had flown to Somalia. So, I had thought this book was an account of how he'd survived after doing this incredibly stupid thing. But in reality he was much smarter than that, he planned his adventure so he had a greater than 50 percent chance of coming home. He hooked up with a local agency that provided him with UN trained bodyguards, secure housing, translators, clan access. So, he wasn't stupid which makes the book much more interesting to read. You get the sense that the local people appreciate that an outsider sat down and let them tell their story, even if their story strains credibility frequently. It is a remarkably fair and balanced account. It is a lively fact-based story.Where it failed for me was the epilogue where he comes to the conclusion that the solution to the problem is a generous influx of cash with few strings attached. The solution to most problems -- the US educational system, third world garbage pickers, the end to our reliance on fossil fuels, unemployment -- could all be fixed by massive influxes of non-judgmental cash. One more set of people with their hand out, saying just trust us, we'll make somebody's life better, we'll get back to you on that, doesn't really convince me at this point.
"Pirates of Somalia" is a stupefyingly audacious book. Actually, it brings it a far bit short to call Jay Bahadur's work simply a "book." It's more life-altering project. Bored writing marketing reports, he conceives an idea to fly to Somalia and get the straight scoop on this international phenomenon by talking directly to its protagonists. Amazingly, he finds a willingness in the people he writes to and - a mere weeks later - he's winging it into a nearly ungovernable country meeting up with contacts heretofore unseen. Say what you want about the book's execution, but in terms of sheer audacity of action: Hats off, my man. Bravo.I knew I was in the right place when Bahadur's references Aidan Hartley's The Zanzibar Chest early on. I view Hartley's book as a masterpiece of reporting and memoir. It's easily one of the best five books I've read. Bahadur quotes a passage in which Hartley "describes in chilling detail the life-and-death importance of clan lineage during the worst days of the [Somalian civil] war." If you see Hartley as your model, I'm in.Bahadur focuses his reporting on the Puntland State of Somalia, the hotbed of piracy. He seeks to cover what he enumerates as the "four main causes explain[ing] the rise of piracy in Puntland: geopolitics, environmental factors, economic adversity, and breakdown of governance." What makes the book sing: this is no armchair analysis from a comfortable, far-away seat. This is face-to-face, winning-hearts-and-minds, chew-the-khat, ride-the-Toyota Surf-to-the-small-village, meet-the-elders, hire-the-bodyguards-and-translators reporting. Very, very well done.

I gave this 3 stars (almost 4) but just could not do it in good faith. I really admire Jay for justdoing this book in the first place. For those who are interested in how and why the Pirates gotstarted....it's a good book. Some of the book is a little boring....but I did get through it. Thepirate "business models" seemed a little contrived....but who knows...they may be "right on"I liked his discriptions of the towns and some of the characters he met. I have had a string of lovely successes with contemporaries lately. I wonder, sometimes, about the phases we go through, both in reading and in life in general and whether or not (or where) they align. I'm not always able to see the patterns amid the daily vicissitudes, but I wonder about them often. Several months ago, I saw the cover for Sarah J. Carlson's debut novel All the Walls of Belfast and thought I might have died and gone direct to heaven. The title alone is my favorite of the year, hands down. I don't even care if those are fighting words. It is the best title of the year, so there. And, happily, it has a cover to match that beauty, all orange and green and hints of the walls that make up its title. I could only hope that the content matched. Somehow I knew it had to.Fiona grew up in America. From the time she was two years old and her mother took her and fled Northern Ireland for the unknown wilds of Wisconsin, she has believed that her father was dead. And now, on the cusp of graduating from high school and applying to colleges, Fiona discovers that her mother lied to her all those years and that her father and stepbrothers are, in fact, alive and well. More than that, her father very much wants to meet her. Which is how she finds herself alone on a plane to Belfast to meet an entire family and history of which she knows nothing. Danny has lived in Belfast his entire life and is quietly (and desperately) counting down the days until he can leave. Growing up in the Shankill, Danny has an abusive and alcoholic father, indifferent brothers, and a mother who died in a bombing when he was a boy. He's spent his life trying to lay low and do well in school so that he can join the British army as a nurse, escape the violence of his childhood, and do some good in a hopefully distant part of the world. What neither of them realize is that one chance meeting will alter the course of both of their lives. If they manage to survive the repercussions.All the Walls of Belfast is being billed as part West Side Story, and the similarities are undeniably present. But it is also very much its own creature in all the best ways. This novel is both incredibly sober and achingly romantic, though neither tone overwhelms the piece as a whole. This balance Ms. Paulson achieves struck me as so skillfully wrought, as it meant that both Fiona and Danny felt their ages. They reflected their wildly different upbringings. We got to spend sufficient time with them each on their own, with their families, and together just the two of them. There were no sweeping escapes, no time away from time, no unrealistic moments for the sake of manufactured drama or faux romanticism. As I said, it is a tale with gravity to it, set as it is on separate sides of a peace wall, in both the Falls and the Shankill areas of Belfast, in the wake of The Troubles. And it highlighted for me, a clear outsider, how alive and present and breathing the legacy of that decades-long conflict truly is. It initially put me in mind of the lovely Eva Underground, as both books treat lingeringly problematic periods in European history in such thoughtful and resonant ways.***My Physics Club T-shirt was mostly dry. He draped the dripping hoodie over the radiator. I sat on his neatly made bed. Each mattress spring poked me. A British flag hung right next to me. At the foot of the bed was a shredded poster; one piece had a soldier with a medic armband."Will you take tea?" Danny asked."I don't drink tea." I just wanted some tape to fix his dream."Right, yous threw it all in the Boston Harbor."***This rare lighter moment is shadowed over by the ever-present barriers between them―Danny's fiercely loyalist upbringing and father and the extremely complicated history surrounding Fiona's republican father and stepbrothers. There is nothing glossy about this tale. Rather, its extreme beauty is tucked away in every loving, yet unflinching detail, in the meticulous depictions of this war-torn city and its wounded people. A great read! All the Walls of Belfast is definitely a page turner! It takes you to Northern Ireland providing a glimpse of culture, landscape, historical events, the impact those events have on the lives of the two main characters and how the past forces them to make difficult choices. A coming of age story that we can all learn from as they work to put their differences aside. Fiona and Danny will be on readers minds long after they are through with the book.
This is a lovely story about imperfect characters with good hearts who make mistakes and have to learn to fix them/ forgive the imperfections in each other. It was daring and realistic and I enjoyed every second of it.I adored the characters in this book. Danny and Fiona were wonderful leads. Their voices were distinct and I found it very easy to fall into both of their heads. I think my favorite thing about them (especially Danny, who grew up significantly less sheltered) was how realistic they seemed to me. They didn't always say or do the right or easy thing, and I never felt like they were making choices to serve the plot. Rather, they were shaping the events around them in unexpected ways.Even though I have never been to Belfast, it was clear to me that Carlson had done her research. The city came alive for me throughout these pages. Just like the characters, my favorite thing about it was how unafraid Carlson was to portray the grittiness and the cracks. Because, just like people, the beauty of the city is inexorably tied up in its flaws and complicated histories and prejudices. Also it's hopes and aspirations.Bottom line, this book is stuck in my head. It will absolutely transport you if you let it.

I'd always heard Phillip K. Dick mentioned in the pantheon of sci-fi writers like Asimov, Heinlein, Clarke and Le Guin. But even though these authors are some of my favorites, I'd never read anything by Mr. Dick. So I decided it was time. When I researched his works, I found that Ubik is considered one of his best and that Time magazine had named it one of the 100 all-time novels (written during Time's publication years 1923-2005).Starting out, I wondered why. While the plot and world building were intriguing, I found the writing a bit clunky (lots of adjectives and made-up words) and the attempt at future technology dated. (not surprising--it was written in 1969 and takes place in 1992). The style reminded me of a sci-fi version of a Phillip Marlowe detective story--a bit cliché even though it may have been the prototype for the cliché.But as the book progressed, the mood took hold of me, an unsettling feeling like the kind you get in those seconds between dreaming and awakening, when you struggle to figure out which is which. By the end, I knew I'd been treated to a great book, a complex, well-crafted and intertwined story of multiple realities, none of which is ever grounded enough to let you sort through them. But there's something more: these realities make you question your sense of life, like The Matrix without the machines, a floating reality that is the state of being itself.The ideas rather than the characters are central to this story. Most of the characters are pretty flat. But once you get used to the world (psychic powers, colony on the moon, dead people in half-life), the mood takes over, as what appears to be reality fluctuates and changes.It's a slow start, but as I stuck with it, I found it well worthwhile, an original work with a deeply unsettling feel. Think Kafka plus Twilight Zone in the Matrix.Down-to-earth folks whose world view is grounded in what they perceive to be reality should probably avoid this book. But despite some rough edges, I found it to be a great read.
This was my first book that I read by PKD. It did not disappoint. I'm really into sci fi so I'm not sure how I messed his works in the past but plan on reading more in the future.I think its pretty hard to go into allot of detailed without giving it away. It deals allot with psychics etc and a process of death where people who are basically dead are put in chambers in which they have brain function and are in a dream like state. So pretty sci fi. lolI don't think its too crazy. I guess I was a bit worried that his books would be so far out there that it would be hard to grasp. I didn't find this book to be this way. He explains everything to understand it in due time. Well maybe not everything. lolIt is a book to make you think and question existence etc. Pretty interesting all around. I plan on reading more of his works.
Aa a near-charter member of PKD's "cult following," I never thought I'd give UBIK, which I always considered one of his late masterpieces, anything less that 5 stars. The problem is that the original version, which I read soon after it came out in 1969, has been extensively revised--I hope by Dick himself. The result is a more elaborate and probably a structurally superior novel, with more characters and an additional major plot line. UBIK was one of Dick's novels that the critics at the time saluted as a work of "genius" which, however, was "flawed." Also, the revised version may be seen to be closer to Dick's central theme, that we all create our own worlds and no one knows what's really going on until near the end of the story, if then. However, the more rational plot development loses some of the intensity and plain terror of the more focused treatment given the original antagonist, and therefore the immense relief I remember feeling when his power is finally blunted. It's as though some of Dick's critics rewrote his book. Still, it's a good read; and I don't doubt that the added aspects, particularly the new plot line based on "deconstruction" theory, are pure PKD.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Ubik although I don't think it will necessarily leave a lasting impression; however, some of the ideas, like being able to prolong the death of a loved one for many years, and also being able to communicate with them, definitely inspired some deep thinking.The world created, the characters, and the general plot seemed well thought out. It did, however, seem like the intention of the book was to keep the twists constant, which can sometimes lead to a disorganized feeling.And the end... I think I had just been too spoiled by big plot twists that by the time I actually got around to reading this book, it was only natural for me to guess (accurately) how the book would end. Nonetheless, it's the meat in the middle that makes it worth it.I liked Ubik, but I doubt it will be among the Phillip K Dick books that I will go back and re-read.
I’m somewhere near the middle of Dick’s Exegesis and I decided to try reading something a little lighter, so I chose Ubik. Whoops! Dick manages to turn one of his recurrent existential themes into a bizarre story. Bizarre in the details of the characters and the setting in the mode of a Dr. Who tv show meets the old Batman series. Bizarre in the theme, like Kafka’s Metamorphosis envelops Lovecraft’s New England. The plot sets two competing corporations against each other; one is full of psychic talent and the other, anti-talents. So far, so good. Very good in fact. Then, the explosion happens and everything becomes more and more weird. Just when you think sense is totally beyond your grasp, Dick ties it all together with a reasonable explanation. The art of the story is truly amazing once you look at if from outside. I found the experience of being inside the story, however, disturbing. Very disturbing!
