Awesome beginners book on guitar making with really good images and nice layout. I find every aspect of this book much nicer than Brian Forbes "acoustic guitar making". There could be more information about acoustic theory of oscillating strings and practical tips for setups but that's really all I can complain about. A book cannot replace the actual experience one will make while actually building an instrument and so can't this one. So don't expect to become a capable luthier by just reading.

This was my introductory text to the world of guitar making. It's hard for me to find fault with it...yes it's short on detail in some places...but those gaps I believe are intentional because learning how to fill them and master the techniques gave me the skills necessary to create great sounding musical instruments. The full scale drawing is invaluable for the beginner. I turned to guitar making after 15 years as a reproduction furniture maker. I was bored with making static and large, albeit beautiful "boxes". I wanted a woodworking niche where I could display the incredible range of beauty present in the raw materials and create something with more than just a footprint presence. Kinkaid's book allowed me to make an instrument that was playable and, although a bit amateurish, had a voice of its own right from the start. Give yourself some latitude to err, don't have expectations that your first instrument is going to sound like it came out of the C.F. Martin factory, and give it a shot. I had to build 2 instruments before I had one that could be played. When I played the first few chords, I was amazed I had built a musical instrument. I was hooked and Kinkaid's book got me started.

I have obtained four different books on guitar making for the beginner. This is by far the most beautiful and interesting book I own on the subject, a real welcome addition to my library. The pictures are not only very beautiful, they are numbered so the reader knows exactly which photograph pertains to the text being read. I am so happy I didn't stop with the last book I received. This one really takes the cake.

Great book, especially if you want to build musical instruments and set up a shop to do it. You do need some skills to understand some things clearly. The plans are great if you know how to read plans. If you don't know how to read plans then learn, don't blame the guy that wrote the book.

I'm 65 and I'm getting ready for a different kind of relationship with guitars.I'd like to become a luthier; a very good luthier. As such there's no such thing as enough knowledge. This series is well written and the information is well presented. As it is among the first of its kind I've every owned I can't say it's the best, BUTI would recommend it to anyone who is on my path or just wants to refine theirown instrument(s).

Great resource for aspiring guitar builder. Although the author doesn't go as deep as I would like into some parts (Pretty much minor stuff that can be easily looked up on the internet), the book is well written and it reads great. Enclosed are plans for a guitar (I think it was drednaught model). The book is full of photos of many guitars and one of them is documented while built (Maybe it was more than one guitar, but nevertheless he didn't skip any part. The book includes many tips for (e.g. how to substitute certain tools that you may have not access to). On the other side that is the only problem as well. While the author assumes that you may not have for example thickness sander and presents a way to plane the wood by hand with few tips how not to chip or otherwise damage the wood while doing so, on some other page he assumes that you have access to something called Go-bar press, which I assume is not that hard to make, but as he himself claims you will probably not build one until you have built few guitars as it is not worth it, but he won't present any substitute anyway. Well, it's not that hard to think of something yourself.Maybe one other issue, he sticks to only one guitar design in the whole book. He discusses few other woods and claims that for example Hawaian Koa cannot be thickness sanded due to it's oily, figured nature, that it is hard to do by hand and things like that, but he doesn't discuss how to deal with these kinds of wood anyway. That was something I would love to know, I was thinking of building a Koa instrument as my first acoustic project. Well I guess I will not risk that now as the wood is too expensive to destroy on first attempt and he says it's not that easy to work with.Anyway, overall great value (for a beginner anyway, I can imagine there are some books discussing the subject deeper for intermediate luthiers), catching book and I think great gift for any acoustic player as I cannot imagine any who wouldn't want to learn about how that piece of wood he plays was made.By the way, I didn't really mind the "advertising" of Kinkade guitars. His guitars are nice and I can imagine sound great. After all it was Jonathan Kinkade who wrote this book, so why wouldn't he promote his stuff? Also, his own guitars are probably the best source for photography due to copyright issues and similar things.

Mr. Kinkead has written an excellent book. Great pictures and, for the most part, clear explanations. A few places leave you scratching your head for awhile. The most serious problem with this book is that he gives no directions on how to make any of the templates or jigs he uses during the various stages of construction, with the exception of the body mold. The plans for the dovetail jig for the neck/body joint would have been extremely helpful. The weakest area of the book, probably because it's the most complex, is the neck construction. But for these shortcomings, I would have given the book 5 stars. I would advise buying other books, such as Cumpiano's, to suplement Kinkead's.

The included plans are absolutely terrible, and the book leaves out crucial information. They do not give you any kind of visual for the radius of the bracing, they do not show you a proper profile of the sides, they do not give you any information about how long to cut the side boards. I should have ordered through StewMac
