I am currently the President of our church board. I used this book for my board retreat. The other board members liked it as much as I did. It is a very helpful guide to lay leadership and I plan to encourage the committee chair persons to use it with their committees as well. My favorite chapter was Mindful Meetings but the whole book is a gem. It doesn't take long to read. I plan to refer back to it during my service on the board. This month I had the board reread the part about elements to add to meetings (such as check-ins, chalice lighting, opening words, vibes watcher) and we discussed which element we would like to incorporate into our next meeting. I had the board members write their names in the front, and their dates of service. Each member will then pass their book on to the new board members as they replace them. (hint: I'm a retired teacher.)

This little book gave me a whole new perspective on church leadership. I belong to a small congregation (about 64 members) and leader recruitment, retention, and burnout is a big issue. After reading Wikstrom, I realized that I need to think differently about everything I do at church. I've always had a mental separation between "church" and "church work." "Church" was where I got inspiration and challenge, spiritual growth, and community. "Church work" was the business that needed to be done to make church happen. I enjoyed much of the work I did for my congregation, but I conducted meetings as if we were a business, not a spiritual enterprise. Wikstrom helped me see that Board meetings are as much a spiritual practice as listening to a sermon or singing in the choir. Board meetings are where we take our mission and make it manifest in the world. They are the place where I need to practice my values and principles to treat others with respect, even when I disagree with them, or find something about them odd or annoying. I think every church leader should read it.

We used this book as a basis for an intensive workshop on conducting Board of Trustees' meetings, and found it a veritable treasure chest of concepts and procedures. Everyon on our board purchased the book and derived great assistance from reading it. We have started to put the author's suggestions into practice, and have found them invaluable.

Looking forward to using this in a workshop for prospective congregation leaders. It will be helpful.

Inspiring and thorough (but short) book on approaching Lay Leadership in a church setting. I would suggest this book to all lay leaders!
