We hear so much about "best practices", but which practices really ARE best? In this very thoughtful read, drawing on not just knowledge and years of experience, Jason Lewis writes from the heart. It's obvious from his writings, he is deeply concerned for both donors and non-profit organizations. I loved how well thought out this book is and how easy it is to read. It's not too long and jam-packed with wisdom. I was both challenged and affirmed in my thinking about fundraising. I underlined so many key points I just about underlined the whole book! It's that great.I highly recommend this book if you're new to fundraising, like myself, as it will set you on the right course. You must have the right mindset in order to do fundraising correctly. This book provides that.
Add this to your collection. Jason presents things seasoned fund-raisers think about all the time but perhaps don't always articulate well. This is a case for changing our organizational culture at every level, moving away from a singular focus on tactics, processes, and as he says, "arms-length fundraising" and toward genuine relationships that draw people into partnership with our causes. Just purchased four additional copies to share with a cohort of small organization Executive Directors who are working together to build sustainability for their organizations. This will help!
I pre-ordered this book after seeing it posted on LinkedIn and then eagerly awaited its arrival. It did not disappoint! It' is a relatively quick read (I finished it within 24 hours) and is very thought provoking. If you are interested in getting off the treadmill of transactional fundraising with low donor retention, this book is for you. Building meaningful relationships with your donors is the only thing that is going to lead to nonprofit sustainability in the long term.
I loved this thought, articulate, well-researched analysis of modern fundraising. It puts into words a lot that has been floating around in the recesses of my mind! It's very important that more of our shops move now to build relationships with major donors, which means we need major donor programs that work, and we need to know how to hire for them when a plethora of establish fundraisers does not exist.
Solid overview of how fund raisers should think of their vocational calling and why talent in this space is so rare. Good perspectives from those who aspire to be successful fund raisers and for those seeking to hire them.
Last chapter is good. Author lost me with his logic at times. But short read and liked the last chapter.
I loved the book so much I bought 6 copies to share with our team and Board members!! It is my new "Holy Grail" for fundraising efforts with our team. Thank you for collecting all of this so clearly and in such a straight forward manner. It's a great read!! Thank you Jason Lewis, CFRE!
As someone involved in nonprofits in one capacity or another, this book provides great perspective and context. I especially appreciate the examples and substantiating background information to back up the author’s assertions.
