Oh the joy of this cookbook. I currently live in Charlotte, NC and my family has driven to Asheville just to eat breakfast here on multiple occasions (it's two hours each way). The food and the staff are that amazing. We will still make the drive because Asheville is so cool, but now we can sometimes eat their food at home. Amaretto Marmalade is my FAVORITE and I am beyond delighted that you shared the recipe. This book is a true representation of updated southern cuisine and you should BUY IT! Plus, the photographs and book quality are lovely â¤ï¸
I more I read this, the more I love it. The biscuit technique is wonderful and who would have thought to use an ice cream scoop??
There is not a recipe in the book that I do not want to try. All of the recipes are relatively simple and do not depend on hard-to-find ingredients. These recipes are also more practical than most in terms of time required to make them.
I made two recipes from this cookbook with mixed results. The Cathead biscuits turned out absolutely dreadful...no one in my family could eat them. The proportion of five cups of flour to one stick of butter just can’t be right...the biscuits turned out like dry flour bombs. I also made the Sausage Gravy recipe using Jimmy Deam sage sausage and it turned out wonderful. I did have to throw away the biscuits and buy some quick bake biscuits to have something to eat with the gravy.From a design standpoint, this is a gorgeous cookbook. I was drawn to the deboss “letterpress†detail of the cover and the photography.
This book has all their greatest hits that are served at their restaurant. I made a few of my favorites at home and they were just as good as the restaurant! I haven't tried any of the biscuit recipes yet because I love biscuits and I'll eat too many.

BEST BOOK ON THYROID health I've read. The name might be a little misleading since with thyroid disease there is no 100% solution just management however this is by far THE BEST book on total thyroid health I've ever read and I've read them all. I literally wish the author was my doctor. I would not hesitate to buy this book if you suffer from thyroid disease.
In flipping through the book upon receiving it, I found on page 346 "... synthetic combinations of T4 and T3 such as Nature-Throid and Westhroid..." I'm astounded. Both of the above are natural preparations derived from porcine gland. Not synthetic.I'll read the whole book, but my confidence and trust in the author is shattered..
Excellent book! If you buy ONE book to learn about thyroid function/dysfunction, disease, manifestations, and direction in seeking answers and treatment, BUY THIS BOOK! I bought the book in 2000/2001 and read it cover to cover (with a highlighter) when my thyroid journey was just beginning. It saved my life. I actually had appts set up for evaluation with the author but was too ill to travel. Fortunately, the 5th specialist I went to (armed with my knowledge from this book) pursued and found my thyroid cancer. I have ordered and given this book to several people and will continue to do so. Thank you Dr. Arem!

Despite his subjects' unimaginable piety, Clarke (Dwelling Place), professor emeritus of American religious history at Columbia Theological Seminary, clearly admires John Leighton Wilson and his wife Jane. John Leighton Wilson and his wife, Jane, had inherited slaves of their own and faced the dilemma of what to do with them before sailing off to save souls in Africa. By the Rivers of Water is a stunning piece of research written with literary elegance by Erskine Clarke. Anyone with roots in South Carolina, anyone who has interest in the early work of the Presbyterian missionaries, anyone who can trace their ancestry back to West Africa or has interest in the history of West Africa, or anyone who wishes to better understand the culture of slavery in the South would find this book to be a must read. I for one, happen to fit into all of those categories. Upon finishing reading Clarke’s book I found myself needing to just sit and be still in an effort to let it sink in chapter by chapter. There are so many things to consider and challenge our pre-conceptions of right and wrong and good vs. bad. The book will be with me for a long time to come.
In addition to By the Rivers of Water being a compelling story, it is a very important book about human nature and the power that cultures and environments have upon it. It also brings much understanding of the Atlantic Highways of the 19th century, race relations, slavery, missionary activity, and the Civil War. This book complements both American Tapestry and Warmth of Other Suns, through a rich and detailed account of the influence of slavery, colonization and the missionary movement on 19th century American social and economic history.
The author described the book very well and I would recommend it to anyone interested in the time period before and after the Civil War. Descriptions of the slave trade were surprising to me.
In 1836, John Leighton Wilson and his wife Jane Bayard volunteered to serve as missionaries in West Africa. Both were from prosperous southern families and both owned slaves. Yet, as staunch Presbyterians, they felt it was their duty to bring Christianity to Africa. They first went to Maryland in Liberia, a settlement of free blacks from the United States. The settlement was backed by the American Colonization Movement whose purpose was to aid free African Americans to return to Africa. The Colonization Movement was not an Abolitionist Movement; rather their goal was to maintain Maryland's `whiteness'.The purpose of the Missionary Societies, however, was to minister to the African peoples. When friction arose between the settlers and the native Africans, Leighton found himself often in the middle of the frey but his sympathies were almost always on the side of the native Africans. The African Americans had absorbed western values which often clashed with those of the native Africans, especially on issues like land and property rights.The Wilsons wished to free their own slaves. However, under Georgia law, if a slave was freed, they had to leave the state. Many slaves were married to others on other plantations and, if they left, they would have to leave their families behind. The decision was finally made to allow the slaves the choice. They could come to Liberia, move to another state, or choose to remain a slave but with the option to take their freedom later. Most chose to move to Liberia.Underneath the Wilsons' actions, however, was a strong seam of racism. When problems arose in Maryland in Liberia, for example, they blamed it on the fact that the Colonization Movement had appointed a `coloured man' as governor. Later, when they were forced to return to the US for health reasons, they opposed the Southern demand for the reintroduction of the international slave trade but considered the election of Abraham Lincoln a sign of northern aggression against the south. When the southern states seceded and Fort Sumter was fired on signaling the beginning of the Civil War, they returned to Georgia to support the Confederacy. When the southern Presbyterian churches decided to also secede from the north and to put forward their declaration that slavery was not in opposition to the word of God, Leighton was one of the signers. Despite his opposition to the international slave trade, Leighton believed that southern whites 'understood' African Americans and their needs and that it should be left up to the southern states to decide how best to deal with the issue of slavery without interference from the north.By the Rivers of Water is a beautifully crafted history of the times with all of its contradictions. Author Erskine Clarke is a Theological historian and he handles all of these contradictions with sensitivity. He recognizes that the people about whom he writes were products of their time while never apologizing for their actions or beliefs. For anyone with an interest in history, this is an elegantly written, well-researched and well-documented portrayal of an important period in American history.
Right off the bat I want to say that this is a 5 star book. I've never seen or read anything like it. Seriously, it's almost a new genre. It is a history book; it's a missionary biography; it's micro-history; it's expansive history. I've read a lot of missionary biographies; I've read a lot of history books; but I've never read the two genres so closely intertwined.Clarke wrote a densely-written, historical account of the missionary endeavors of John Leighton and Jane Wilson into West Africa. That's the framework of the book, but it is also an historical documentation of the African-American colonies in Liberia and Gabon, the Gullah people on the coast of Georgia, the beginnings of African-American churches in South Carolina, and an historical look at the Atlantic highway in the years immediately preceding and during the Civil War. Absolutely fascinating.Leighton and Jane both came from large plantation and slave owning families in the deep south. This is their story of how they came together, and how Jane established schools in Africa, while Leighton fought the International Slave Trade and colonization, and translated portions of the Bible into Grebo and Mpongwe. However, when the Civil War started Leighton and Jane moved to the south to stand with their family.The author takes Leighton to task for departing from his moral vision after the Civil War. I probably would have cut him more slack. Given the fact that Leighton's family were plantation owners, he had to overcome a lot of cultural biases against going to Africa in the first place. Schools and reading were against the law for slaves, yet he gave his life to those tasks. I guess we all wish that the Civil War didn't produce so much bitterness in the aftermath.This book shows incredible scholarship and documentation. I love the advice in the first few pages. I even took notes.Then, I started reading some of the excerpts he included as examples of great writing.Umm... ick. I realized it's powerful writing, but it's also sad, tragic, or downright depressing. Maybe all three.Also, after the second chapter - the "seven easy steps," which are brilliantly described - this book became increasingly less useful to me.If you love stories that tug at your heartstrings because they're so sad/awful, or can overlook those kinds of emotionally charged triggers, this book may be a cover-to-cover gem. (I reached the point where the diminishing returns, in terms of advice, made the "ick" factor not worth wading through.)But, if your public library carries this - or you can pick up a copy at a low price - McDonald's "seven steps" are succinctly described and a great template for stories... even if you have every other plotting framework (hero's journey, three-act story, etc.) known to man.
There are already a ton of reviews for invisible ink and I'm going to add another. What is invisible ink? It is a book about story telling, structure, best practices really and it's extraordinary. You can read ton of reviews that will echo that thought so I'm going to instead try a different approach. Who is invisible ink for? Every body.Invisible ink goes into great detail about the aspects of story telling that usually isn't apparent, the parts that are planned and guide and build the story without necessarily actually being a part of the story. Sub text and so on. While it might be apparent from the get go what makes this useful for a writer, it might not be so apparent what makes this useful for a reader. The truth is that this is maybe the best tool for getting enjoyment out of reading I've ever read. This book has some very simple concepts that will be relayed to you in a simple manner which does not presume you have any background in writing at all. Anyone will be able to follow and understand the concepts and the way the book builds on those concepts to deliver more makes it all the more accessible. If you enjoy stories, movies, books, comics.. You should read this book because you'll get way more out of them after reading this book than you did before.One of the main concepts of this book is that stories should have a simple theme and follow them. This book is itself non-fiction, and yet it even follows that concept. The theme of having a theme is the glue that basically puts every concept together. The book will keep revisiting this theme itself and and further cement why it is important. Additionally in doing so the subject matter is easier for the reader to retain (I took notes while reading and plan to read again, but you by no means have to go through such lengths). If you've ever read a book, or watched a show and thought something was especially well done or bothered you, but couldn't quite put your finger on why, this book makes it clear.As far as flow this book though non fiction really feels like a page turner. Through use of example and relating it back to stories you're familiar with, the lessons flow from the pages not like a lecture, but rather like you are actually watching an entertaining movie itself. Never a time did I find the material dry or especially difficult to trudge through. Finishing this book is something you could do quickly or savor it and re-reading potential, in order to retain more is quite high.I do have one complaint and the author knew this would happen as he addresses it in the book. There is a time when he uses a gender tag for a concept that I personally wonder if it was a necessary way to describe the concept. He insists it is and spends a bit of time defending it in his work, but it felt a tiny bit like a distraction to me. I know some readers have found that section to be too much and stopped reading, but I personally think they missed out. It's a minuscule nitpick and for such an accomplished writer whose book is so extraordinary, I think we should forgive that section even if we don't entirely agree with it. I personally thought the content was spot on, just the labeling bothered me a tad. Small price to pay for this masterpiece book and I for one defer to the author's wisdom.So in conclusion, who is this book for? Everyone. There is no one who could not benefit from the knowledge contained and it even reads a little like a fun little fiction. If you don't read this book you are seriously missing out.

I probably read this book to my kid three times a day. Not by choice...she throws it into my lap, makes a bird noise (quack, hoot, tweet), and forces me to read it. Shes an 18 month old dictator. If she wants the bird book, we must read the bird book. I give this 5 star review in her honor.
We love the Mrs. Peanuckle books! I can’t wait to buy them all. The fun facts for each bird make it interesting even for me to read. My 2 year old has me read the Mrs. Peanuckle books to her several times a day, so I’d definitely recommend them for your child’s library.

A pretty serious and interesting book by Robert Temple, requiring sharp attention and careful scholarly consideration. There is so little that we really can claim to know about our own history as humans and this book is just another representation of the scope of how "little" that little really is. Of course, for staunch Darwinists these ideas may be no more than fiction, mythology, but upon deeper reading we have to understand that mythology on some level is more factual than the facts concocted by the scientists. After all, comparing to a human life, the age of a myth is much much longer.On this point I am bound to believe that we have never developed gradually from the one-celled organisms, then amphibians and finally primates. There are way too many glitches in that (still) theory. First of all - why there is no evidence of any primates becoming human in the last several thousands years of recorded history? Second, where are all the connecting links between the fish and the humans. I would expect a much higher diversity of different variations of fish-humans being still present and functioning as part of our current biosphere. Third, why haven't we seen any humans evolving into the super-humans, whatever that may mean. Obviously we are not the apex of evolution, in fact considering what we are doing - we are much worse than the dung-rolling beetles. At least they get rid of the excrement.So with this disregard for the theory of evolution, I have to conclude that if we became, at least physiologically what we are today, that must have been a rather fast, laboratory like process. Indeed, looking at the great complexity and the great variety of creation it is hard not to conclude that this was all created by the Creators too sophisticated to understand. I think this book is a great step on the way to connecting with ourselves, and our true ancestors no matter how far away they may seem.

Some of the more critical reviews of this book have stated that the information in it is not really new. The point is that The Sirius Mystery was originally published in 1976, over 30 years ago. It was new then. In fact, the book caused quite a stir, especially in Europe, where Temple's explanation of the cosmology of the Dogon tribe was well received.At the time the Sirius Mystery came out, I was deeply into the tabloidish Erich Von Daniken and I found Temple's writing too intellectual, too scholarly for my liking...so I merely skimmed over it. Since those heady days, and having read just about everything else I could get hold of, I have long since drifted away from the alien astronaut thesis. So re-reading the Sirius mystery now leaves me a little flat.I would caution readers that the writing style is a little difficult, but there are some real gems inside, so it is definitely worth persevering. Certainly, none of Temple's critics have been able to discredit his research or refute his conclusions. I give it only 3 stars because his conclusions are too forced to sit comfortably with my own sense of logic.
A greatly detailed book why the author thinks Aliens came here, and their connection with Egypt and the Dogon Tribe of Africa.Why the Dogon's celebrate the passing of Digitara, their home planet around Sirius,every 64 years.Very interesting.
Strangely, after reading this many oddities and things I'd seen many times seemed to fit well into this mystery.Can get rather tedious to read, but it is very interesting.
It's a great revelation concerning the advanced knowledge of the Dogon and a link up to other theories about the Annunaki. The book belabors the point a bit, especially concerning Jason and the Argonauts, and the dragon's teeth. It drags a bit but the information is still very interesting.
This book is chuck full of amazing information and should be widely read. Another volume is the "ancient alien" series, but much better than most. A great addition to anyone who is interested in alternative history library. 5 Stars
